I just received an email back from the guy selling these Korean jacks game, or Ganggi. He saw all the pictures of the ones that have been found to date. Here is his response:

"This is plastic and is round on the side, i don't think they have any relationship."

I was mistaken, but that is not 2002.

I tried to post earlier, hit the wrong key, and lost it all. Will spare all of the drivel it may have contained and get right to the point.
My Son (the Sports fanatic) has told me this:
The items main theme seems to be Basketball.
In 2002, Indianapolis hosted the FIBA games.
I guess this is part of the World Cup?
"he told me I would not understand the details... Grr.. rude teen children"
The car is a Formula One?
So, as quick as he was to answer my questions and retreat to his room, I think this might relate.
World cup has something to do with qualifying for the Olympics?
Not here to steal anyone's thunder. Many of you have worked long and hard for the answer. Sometime's a different prospective helps to redirect and look at things from another angle.
What the Heck are those items?

the car or motorsports really throws this thing for a loop

Hey, here is a real "What is it" that got barely any response. It could possibly be a couple hundred years old. It is some type of coin. I don't understand all the attention your silly game pieces have gotten. It is obvious what they are by now. Or is everyone just having fun with this? Everytime I check out "what is it" I keep seeing this. ??? ???

I am sorry your post did not get the attention you thought it should. Did you get the coin cleaned up yet to give us some clues as for where to look? Honestly from the photo's you have posted I wouldn't even know where to start looking. And yes this post started out just for fun but turned into an obsession for a few of us. Its kinda like watching a bad movie that you just have to keep watching to see how it ends, lol.

As for it being "silly game pieces" I guess I don't understand why you feel the need to put down this post and those of us who are having a little fun with it. I hope you find out just exactly what you have there and it turns out to be what you hope it is. Good luck with your search and happy hunting.

Gonggi (gongginori) or (ddakchi) is played with plastic pieces now, but they used to be metal and before that stones. Plus, it is an asian game, not just Korean. I can't take the pop-ups when searching for pics of what you have. Sorry. If I find them I will let you know. Good luck!

Thats Why I asked if you guys were just having fun. I figured that part out and tried to help out. Sorry if offense was taken. :)

From the pictures I've found and seen here, I think we can conclude that they are "Jack Stones." The plastic ones with sparkles in them are the same shape, size, octagonal, and have the same sort of "end caps." They just don't have any symbols and they are not metal. I think the direction of the "Search" should focus on finding out the "Who, What, When, and Where" about these metal, sports related "Jack Stones."

This is the response I got from the Ebay lister:

What so special about this.
Lots of korean factories made this.
They have lots of different shape and size.
Every piece is a small plastic box with small metal pieces inside.
Thats all i can help you.

Drag that kid back to the room ;D ..We may have a connection,FIBA is basketball and was held in Indianapolis in 2002..FIFA is soccor and was held both in Korea and Japan in 2002... If I read correctly FIBA gets you ranking into the Olympics and FIFA the World Cup. Now if the emblem in the first 0 in 2002 is Korean is the emblem in the second 0 for Japan?...Go get 'em Professor

Ha Ha, I am lucky if I can keep him in the house these days! That's what happens when the Boy's are in HS & have a licence to drive :) Right now he is golfing and I am no good at internet searching. (I need the kids to do it for me)
That said, he helped me a little today and brought up a site for me called Wikipedia. What I do know is this, Formula one is not listed at part of the World cup but is listed in the world championship. These two "worlds" games seem to run together somehow?
I will leave the internet searching up to you guys. Maybe someone can find a discussion board relating to the above games? My son also said these might have been given out by one of the sporting companies. Hope this gives someone some ideas!

That also said, I was thinking that as a "newbie" jumping into the middle of this hot topic, I should tell you a little about myself. As I said, I have been reading the boards for some time now. I use my metal detector from time to time but not as often as I would like. Another hobby I am active in is Geocaching. I also have a passion for old things. My grandparents were antique dealers when I was young and I guess I caught the bug. My favorite place in the shop was the display cases that held all of the little trinkets. I was always amazed at how much some of those little things people would normally toss into the garbage could be worth. My grandfather also had a personal collection of antique toys and games. I guess that is why I found this topic interesting.
I hope that I am welcome here.:)

I think the games use English as the "official" language. All the material I've seen on all the world cup games and Olympic events and websites has always been in English no matter where they were held. I don't have an "official" word on this but I've never seen any other language used at these events.

I'm not convinced it is a car. It looks to stylized. Sort of like a racing bike. Sort of like a classic racing car. Sort of like a roadster.

The car is the "fly in the ointment" but I'm not sure exactly what it is supposed to represent.

That or the UFO came back and took him this time.

OK guys, I'm back, and right now I'm nobody to be around. I took care of a skunk problem at the local 7-11 and managed to get myself sprayed. Oh well, it's not the first time. I stopped in to get me a Slurpee and was shown a skunk that had been there since last night. Since my company is called Redneck Rodent Removal, they decided I was the man for the job. I didn't have anything to put him in with me, so I herded him into the woods and disposed of him. Not before he had got off one good blast while I wasn't looking. Now I'm headed to the shower to get cleaned up. One thing about being sprayed, you really don't smell yourself because it overpowers your sense of smell. Everyone else knows though.

Mystrybird new eyes and new ideas are welcome any time..Still think we need to tie that kid down and make him tell all he knows ;D
Don
Tie him down? LOL I am the mom and my boys are much bigger than I. It has been many years since I could as well. The only thing that would work is to tell him is is not allowed to attend F-ball practice & sit out of Basketball this winter until he tells me what they are. :;

When he came home this evening he did say something that caused me to spit out my drink.
"Mom, someone on that board is going to be upset if those things came from a Happy meal or something" ::)

I am not going to question the Professer (you live too close and I have family in Mankato) but I thought that the racecar might be a 2 wheeler as well. I won't say that it is not, but looking at the close up I believe it looks more like an older Formula One car than a 2 wheeler.

I was also thinking.... If these were officially authorized, would they require a visible trademark?

piggman1... When you figure out what these things are, I suggest you take them to another sporting field/park where you see someone with a Metal D, toss them on the ground, and let someone else lose sleep over them. Might make you feel better. ;D
