Dutchman's Caches

I remember when I used to prospect on a regular basis...Top ramen was 20 for a buck and I worked for a cannery that canned chef boyardee dennison chili ranch style beans and a few other canned goods...I used to pick up said canned goods on the cheap...lol...Those were the days...I wonder IF I will ever find anything as interesting as the stuff I found back then...

Ed T

Howdy all. You never know unless you look! Top Shelf Ramen is good out there. :) There are still things to be found. It's not even the finding that's cool, it's the hunt! I don't see ol' Jacob hiding it out in the sticks after working to get it out of the ground though.

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving feast, whether with family at home or out in the tall tules.

I am guilty of frequently saying that no one ever finds any gold when out looking for the LDM. The truth is a little different. Even Sims Ely and Jim Bark ended up finding gold, by taking John Chuning as a partner. Chuning found a decent gold deposit and the three men mined it until it pinched out. Chuning told the newspapers that he believed he had found the LDM some time later, and unfortunately passed away before he could show the site to his partners. In the early days of Dutch-hunting quite a few different people claimed to have found the LDM and had actually found a pretty good gold mine in its own right, though not really the LDM. The old newspapers are fairly dotted with articles about this guy or that one finding a rich gold mine and thinking it is the LDM. So it was not fair or accurate for me to say that no one ever seems to find any gold. However in modern times too many people are proclaiming to the world that they have found the LDM and have no gold to show for it, when it is supposed to be the richest gold mine in the world.

Please do continue;

Oro,
That was a really nice post. Thanks for sharing. Right now, I only believe that I have located the ravine, you and azdave are correct by saying no LDM ore, no real confirmation (I'll add here "of the LDM mine"), because I also believe that the reality is that somehow verifying the ravine, may be all that is left that can reasonably be done, especially for the everyday hardworking folk, that enjoy going out looking for it. If I am able to ever make it back in, I will document and share pics of anything related to location verification. If you have information that the LDM ravine is elsewhere, perhaps you would share? Even if it was played out, it would be good know.
I look forward to your response,
Sincerely, Idaho Dutch

I re-read this and just wanted to clarify that I'm (edit: NOT) asking for you to reveal your area, but if you know of a different ravine that fits, it would be interesting to talk about . . . (Just because I believe something, doesn't make it fact) :)

Wow, talk about a blunder . . . really sorry about that

I often wonder what type of booby trap is supposed to be in that Rainbow of a mine Jakob had or in one of his caches. He never said his caches would kill anyone but he did say the mine was set up to kill anyone trying to get into it. However if I had a cache that'd be the first thing I'd try to salt. Heck that's a lot of work to get it out of the ground and actually move it to hide it!

Sooner or later someone is stumble across a rat hole and stick their head in and get a nose full of arsenic or something.

I've often wondered if Walt Gassler didn't get poisoned. He was well enough to walk in there and he's one of my hero's for some reason. Anyway has anyone ever thought about what type of booby trap is in the mine/cave/cache?

Probably best to take a mask or am I being paranoid? Please do continue all. I enjoy the conversations. That may the best and most tangible treasure of all.

So in order to keep the discussion going when you guys ever stick your head in a hole in the ground do you ever worry about it being poisoned? I am asking because arsenic doesn't degrade and could make for a really bad day.

Hey Old Man,
I don't have any idea as to what kind of booby trap waltz set, if any at all. but who really knows?
I hadn't thought about the cashes , but I kind of doubt it. I think I would be checking for scorpions and snakes though before poking in too close :)

At times I wonder about dang booby traps in some mines...I was playing around with some sulfide ore and muriatic acid long long ago when I did not know much about anything...And one thing led to another and for some silly reason hydrogen sulfide gas was forming at a rapid rate...Luckily I had knowledge of said gas while working at an oil refinery as a B mechanic for Timec long long ago...Anyhow I tossed the mixture aside and ran for the hills...lol...Thank God I am here to tell the tale...So all of you greenhorns out there should be careful IF you are playing with acids and certain ores...

But what do I know???

393,
That would be a bummer to step or fall onto some punji sticks. You think there could be a deadfall?

ps - thanks for providing the link. It got used.

I`m a confined space entry supervisor for my company since we work inside tanks and excavations often. My primary concern would be the stability of anything you would consider going into. Like the Drift Mine by the Pit Mine looks pretty unstable and I wouldn`t go in there.

393Stroker, a deep tunnel would be a little freaky for me, and if it was shored up, what kind of shape would they be in now. It would be hard to trust something like that.
At least with the LDM, waltz supposedly left the largest cashes in the mine. Good chance it may not be very far down. Wouldn't make sense to burry it deep. Deep is where it just came from.
Then the other 2 cashes, if either of them is still there. I don't think that the Dutchman planned on ever needing to mine more out. He was getting on in years. . . Just pondering,
Please, continue.

Howdy Dusty,

I have often wondered if he really booby trapped the mine. Why, and how would he use arsenic to do so if he planned to open it back up some day? He may have just said it to discourage people from even looking for it. Then if he did booby trap it, with plans to go back some day for the rest of his gold, I believe a gun would work better. Lifting a certain log would pull the trigger, and he would know which one. If he used a gun, it would be rusted useless by now.

Homar,
You have a tricky mind my friend :)
I was thinking earlier about Julia & Rhiney. . . was Waltz going to go with them to the cashe from the mine or one of the others? I seem to recall that maybe he already got one or both of the cashes?
Would he send them to go get it if it could kill them? just more pondering.

Homar,
What else you thinking?
Idaho

ps - remind me never to go digging in one of your spots
If I happen to be present at you death bed and you give me a map to your treasure, you can be sure there will be at least 1 question I would have:)

Hola Homar!

I am not certain he intended on opening it up again, hence the caches. Maybe it was just talk by a man trying to protect his secret. Nobody knows.

I thought he was going to go to the QCU ranch and steer them in if he couldn't make it to the mine location. I think he said he could go there and back from the mine in one day. Maybe there is no booby trap at all but perhaps there is. One thing is certain a Magic 8 ball has more precise directions than he gave. Hope you are doing well Idaho. Those tanks I told you about are over by Hells Hole Spring.

there is no evidence to support waltz booby trapping the mine...another bar room b.s. story

Howdy Gentlemen,

I am with Azdave with this one, I am not sure who wrote about Waltz booby trapping the covered mine, but if he did, it would be one of the most important clues in the Holmes manuscript, and also from Julia & Rhiney.

Homar

Homar,
I agree. A booby trap doesn't really fit into the story. But I do like the way your mind works if a booby trap was needed for something. Made me wonder what else you got cooking . . .
Idaho

Agree with Dave - I have never seen or read about any booby-traps. Could someone please enlighten me with a reference to it?

Loke, I don't recall anything other than people just talking . . You know, what if conversations. But I don't remember the things I forgot, so can't really say for sure:icon_scratch:
