DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATED 2012

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

When I was a little chillen the elementary school nearby used to have a paper drive. They had this big old trailer parked there at the school for a month or so.
I would go climb up inside it.

That was where I first read amazing tales about naked women and the things they liked to do.....Playboy and Penthouse were scattered all through the newspapers! ;D

Hey Bob, did you just bump to get that Playboy stoy back up top again? You gonna do Highland Park or Lake Forrest this year on spring cleanup?

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

I found this in the dumpster at work about 4 years ago. Yes it's a knockoff. My coworker and I were checking the dumpster after the weekend. It was in a crown royal bag. The funny thing was, when I got it out, I even said something like "watch it be a Rolex or something". I was surprised, but the look on my coworker's face was priceless.

I try to hit the dumpster at the local PC repair shop once a week on sunday when they are closed.
There is gold in those junk PC boards and possessors, I just collect them for my nephew in college and he recycles the gold.

Never did it...Hear a lot of stories.
Friend down the street is the mail man for one of the areas.
He's brought home some nice stuff.

Hey Bumpstick,

Why don't you go to the front door during business hours?

Tell them you have a nephew who recycles to help pay college tuition and ask them for the cards & boards.
Ask them to put 'em in a box for you.

I'll bet they'd be happy to do it for you.

Beats the heck outta climbing up into the can!

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

Missed this post originally. But I've dived a dumpster or two in my day..................

Back when I was in the Army and stationed in Alaska (early 1980s) I found a full set of oversized Goodyear Tracker AT tires with about 60% tread left in a dumpster behind a bar called the Feed and Fuel. Put them on my Chev 4x4 PU and ran them all over the boonies for the next two years.

One night a few years ago I saw the dumpster behind Block Buster was overflowing with bags of DVD cases. Closer inspection revealed hundreds of them in perfect shape, also in grey and white. I sold many of them and traded a bunch to a local pawn shop for store credit, and kept about 200. I gave some to friends and family members and used a lot of them over the last few years but still have 20 or so.

A couple months after finding the DVD cases, I saw the dumpster was overflowing again, but this time it was bags of DVDs. Most of them were smashed and broken ??? but some were still perfect and for some the cases were broken but the DVD was okay. I salvaged about 50 movies and used the cases I had previously found for the 30 or so that had broken ones. I traded a few (2 for 1) at the pawn shop and gave some away (I collect movies so most of them I already owned) to friends and family.

Working as a police officer for the University of MO I found a lot of stuff discarded by students who were leaving and couldn't (or didn't want to) take stuff with them. Over the years I recovered:
DELL desktop computer and monitor - worked well for three years after adding some extra RAM, a graphics card and overclocking the micro-processor. Sold it to another student at the college for more than the upgrades cost..............
Infra-red (wireless) computer keyboard and control module - used it for 2+ years on the above PC.
2 Leather Office Chairs - one black (still have), one rust colored (gave to a friend).
20" Samsung color TV - still have, just used a universal remote on it.
Mini-bike frame with gears/chain/tires - gave to mechanic friend, put engine on it, runs great.
A round, floating cooler with cup holder holes in the floatie part (around the perimeter) - great for tubing on the creeks and rivers!!
A gold necklace (18k) and a couple silver bracelets (made in Mexico) - gave former to Mom and others to my Sister.
A couple fans, paper shredder, VCR, headphones and a quite a few lamps.
Misc pieces of luggage and soft side coolers.
Various music CDs, DVDs, books, sporting equipment, throw rugs, computer and electronic parts and accessories and toys.
Clothes, shoes, boots, jackets and hats.

Most of the latter stuff I donated to local charities.

Anyway, whoever lives in a college town, check the dumpster areas around the residence halls and student housing units starting the middle of the week before the end of semester. Students start throwing good stuff away when they are leaving school.......... :o

Speaking of trash, dumpster diving and never knowing what you'll find, here's my favorite movie clip on the subject from "Better Off Dead" where the main character tries to commit suicide by jumping off an overpass but lands in the back of a trash truck!! HILARIOUS!!

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

My father-in-law does handy man type work on the side; sometimes for a little extra cash and sometimes just to help mates out. Anyway, both he and I would pick up scrap stuff that people were throwing out. Metal, timber, pipe, etc. Anything he thought he might be able to use to fix something with.

Once at the dump we found a set of lockers; the tall kind you see in schools. There were four of them connected together. We cleaned them up, painted them, got some padlocks and they made excellent storage lockers for some tools, fishing gear, etc. out in the garage.

Once someone was throwing out some perfectly good baseball gear. I picked up two metal bats, one wooden bat, three gloves, and a bucket with about 20 baseballs in it.

I've picked up some beat-up bookshelves that are too ugly to have in the house but are good to use out in the garage.

Most most recent find was a push mower. It must not have been used in years and the previous owner gave up on trying to start it. I gave it a good clean, about 45 minutes of some minor engine work, and it cranks like a champ now.

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

Yeah, spring cleanups bring out the beast in the pickers around here. I once had a monopoly, as a kid.

A few years ago the schools here in town upgraded all their computers. The techs who did it spent about a week at each school, during summer recess. The dumpster behind my house was loaded with every manner of pc and peripheral. Most of the pc's were old HP 75 mHz machines, eh, took a few for old time software I am still fond of. But I did get about some 19" monitors, a few HP6100 series scanners, a few HP Laserjet printers, and a couple deskjet printers. They also threw out all the ancillary supplies, ink, cartridges, a wall of cables. I pulled all the HD's and NIC's and anything else out of the pewters I might foresee a need for since they most likely won't be found at any store these days.

The techs took pliers or screwdrivers and bent the pins on the HD's but did not wipe them. Takes about 25 minutes to realign the pins and get one plugged in. Got to see what the teachers look at on the internet, car shopping, home shopping, price quotes. Shame on me, eh?

Have found a few company computer dumps also in the past driving arouns the businesses here abouts. Mostly this stuff gets used up on folks I know who have problems with their pc's where possible.

That was at the school behind my house. I hit two others, cops pulled up on me at one of the other schools and asked me if what I was doing was legal. I said it sure was, they agreed.

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

Sure it's legal!

It's called recycling.
I just wish it paid a little!
But it keeps me outta trouble...

...is what I would say to 'em with a big grin! ;D

A friend came by the casa once... had just taken his garbage to the community trash compactor...
The story ended up a mad, divorced wife had taken out revenge on the X...
He had 3 compete R/C helicopters with radios and a ton of other parts that he caught before they squeezed the load. About 1/2 a small pickup truck load. Some people are lucky!

All I can say is that the stories are amazing yet sooooooooooo TRUE.........

Wasteful society....

Corporate waste at it best...........

It's slowing down over the last few years... with all the hype.... But still fun and profitable....

This thread rocks. I've never found much of real value in dumpters other than some good books but it doesn't stop me from looking every now and then. It's just amazing what you guys have found.
