I'm not sure it's been posted yet, but in Germany, every community has trash days, usually once or twice a year. American G.I.s love trash days and you can find some pretty awesome stuff! my uncle, an LTC practically furnished his house with curbside finds!

I guess the Germans are taxed on the number or type of electronics in their house. The American community papers even post the days in most cases that the trash days are!

Oh - BTW, did I mention I've been assigned BACK to Germany in March!? (Sorry - I'm pretty stoked!)

That's how we finished our barracks rooms back in 79. Some very nice stuff is placed on the curb. The folks who were married would pick up the nice house hold stuff and ship it back when they rotated back to the states.

My village has a yearly clean up week, where they offer free dumpster, for the townsfolk to get rid of stuff......... I usualy bring home more,, than I take to throw out.. The clean up seek is only a couple months away woo hoo!!

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2009

Spring cleanup last week hereabouts. The trucks coming with folks sorting through the piles looked like a new fleet this year. Guess last year's booty paid well! Didn't get the opportunity to work the curbs this year.

Hey Bob, any local Chicagoland schedules?

I use to ... Pretty much came to a halt now that they implemented the new garbage can system. ( about 2 years ago ) For 20 years I would go through the routes in Des Plaines and Park Ridge. Sometimes MT. Prospect and Niles.
The MONEY that was made.......

My best, 1962 Fender Telecaster with case that I sold to a dealer for a grand and he didnt even play it. Just opened the case and handed me the money! Lots of yard tractors and mowers, stereo speakers. Garbage pick up week is a beautiful thing! My brother refers to us as the second hand yuppies.

I know this is an old string, but had to add this info. That 1962 Telecaster MIGHT have been worth 10 to 20 TIMES the $1000 you got. There's a place in Nashville, TN called Gruhn Guitars that sell, repair / restore, and buy antique and collectible stringed instruments; especially guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, and base fiddles. I watched a series of programs about the shop on the DIY network and those Telecasters and Stratocasters by Fender can be quite valuable. Their website is http://www.gruhn.com/ Check them out for future reference. You never know when this info might come in handy.
the tele retails new(non vintage) for over the grand id guss it was worth about 7 grand in good condition

Good Morning! I just wanted to add to this topic. My dad used to work for the parish (county) landfill. It was where the all garbage was sent from the parish. One occasion, the national guard decided to clean their "basement" that was used for a fall out shelter during the cold war era. Men, I am telling the "stuff" they threw away was unreal. They threw away old but never used stainless steel surgical tables, and equipment. Blankets, Stainless steel cooking utensils, lanterns, generators, and the list goes on. The national guard couldn't give this stuff way but dad and a few of his fellow helpers loaded pickup loads of "stuff" and brought them home. We still have some that "stuff" today and that has been several years ago.

My wife and I picked up FOUR aquariums on Friday. Two fifty five gallon and two thirty gallon. All fine and no cracks or leaks. Who throws away aquariums?

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2009

WoW! I'm old. I started to recycle in the early 1950's. picked up beer bottles 1cent for stubby's 3cents for a small soda bottle and a nickle for a quart soda bottle. Graduated to picking recylceable metal, Steel,Copper, brass. We had an old open pit dump a block from our home. Brought so much junk home that my mom, said no more and when she caught us ( the neighbor boy and I) at the dump she used a switch on us all the way home. We had a wagon load of real trash and she would not let us let go of the wagon handle. Made a real lasting impression. Did not stop us just slowed us down. Bought old cars for 25-35 dollars and sold them for 50-75 dollars. I go to estate sales and Thrift shops and do curb side recycling. (Picking up discards). Latest a metal tool box that sells for 45-50 $. I have it full of tools that I have gotten at various locations. On Sunday afternoons I go to garage sales that are closing and offer them a small amount for the remainder of the mdse. they have left. Have made some great buys which I have sold at Flea markets or my own garage sales. My wife and I have picked up many book shelves and chests and furnature that now we use. Our college involved daughters have the bug and have furnished their dorms and apartments with used furniture, dishes, and what ever they need. Many of the garage sales in the expensive part of town have a free section. I can't tell you how many collectibles I have been the receipient of just for asking. I am so glad to see that others on this forum are into the same typs of activities that I engage in. HHHH

The pepsi company throws away 12 packs of their soda
all the time if even one of the sodas are busted, we use to
load up on pepsi products from their dumpsters.

Does dump digging count? I've found plenty of cool old bottles, cans, relics, even coins and tokens in old dumps.

Or does garage and estate sales count? I've been hunting those for years and selling my finds on Ebay. I've found some doosies.

As far as straight out in the alley in the trash, no I haven't done that too much. But I'd tag along if you took me. LOL
One persons trash is another persons treasure. I find valuable stuff thrown away. Dumpsters are full of valuble reusable stuff. So are dumps

My most exciting freebie didn't come from a dumpster or curbside but from the local swap meet where a guy said his kid was going off to college and wouldn't have room there for his telescope. I could have it free!! I picked it up the next day, attached my Nikon and took the Moon pics below (I added the stars).

WOW, those moon shots are great
Free telescope, great score.

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2009

That's great, Scrubber.

There's actually a lot of nice people out there who aren't interested in hoarding, and smart enough to NOT throw things away.

Excellent picture of the moon!

Great photos, Scrubber! I didn't realize you'd gotten that scope for free!! Great score.
Nice to see it went to someone who knows how to use it!
Making any progress on getting you astronomy site back up and running??

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2009

My husband is a Real Estate Agent, 2-3 times a year, he will have a listing that is a rental and the owners live out of town and he has to schedule Salvation Army to come by and empty the house of its contents before it transfers to the new owners. He sends me over there the day before to see if there is anything I might want. I have been in listings where I got sets of towels (new w/ tags), china, crystal, books, signed and numbered prints with frames, pots/pans.....etc....

Thats a lot of fun.....

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2009
