All Treasure Hunting
Well last Sunday 02/19/12 I was out hunting with Bilt36 and Mikewaz in the woods along The river, First time in about 6 months, it looked like a good spot ,very old neighborhood, and we have found older coins here before. So I started looking around, about a half hour out there I got a good hit at 9 inches, it was a little star with writing on it ,I thought it was maybe a charm for a necklace with someone’s name on it so I put it in my pocket and kept hunting . A little while later I found a Mercury dime, and when I met up with the guys I showed them my finds, and that is when I saw what I had ,I cleaned it off and noticed the seated liberty on the backside of it, at first I thought shoot ,Seated coins are my favorite coins and look what somebody did to this one, I never found a seated half, but after those guys told me how cool and unique this was then I took a good look at it and ,yes it is neat, so they suggested I put it on Treasure Net, So I did when I got home. Mainly to see if maybe anyone knows anything about this star , and yes and show it off, I enjoy reading all the stories, and after 25 yrs of Metal Detecting I felt This was something different to see on hear. and one of my best finds!
So thanks again to everyone for your posts

Congrats on a beautiful one of a kind find and making the banner to boot! :hello2:

If there was a banner above the banner this would be on it....... In my dreams... What a find,,, definitely will make the magazines, and put the new Tnet owners over the top, (trying to slow down heavy breathing now)..OMG!

Im not asking for your spot,,, But could this possibly be in area that would mean ,,,, it was really a deputy sheriffs badge??? or a kids toy??? being made from a seated Im thinking it was no toy...

Just a little info I found on the net. Some of the original Texas Ranger badges were made from Mexican coins by jewelers, gunsmiths ect. These were authenticated. So why couldn't this badge be the real thing?
http://www.texasranger.org/history/HistoricBadges.htm

I Don't wish to argue, Especially when I wasn't there
when it was Made, or 100% Confident :tongue3:
Plus arguing and debate
in a Banner thread especially, is not cool :(

However "simplicity" is my reason.
unless I Was a child,
someone flashes me a badge like that,
I'd laugh, even If I lived back then.
there was no Deputy Sheriff of the world.
they still had Boundries & it should
be on the badge imo :dontknow:
With that he could live in Austin TX, travel
to any town in New Mexico, & Claim he's a Deputy Sheriff
of Santa Fe., because he has a star someone carved Deputy Sheriff on,
to prove it.

Now that's a cool find. Congradulations..

I think it is a kid's badge also because of this. However, I would not think that they would care enough about security back then to be afraid that someone will wear it and fake a police officer.

That is SO very cool!! :icon_thumright:

wow thats a really nice interesting find and well found :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on a super Find!
I agree most LTs were made form Seated Coins,
Don't agree with 1870-1890 time frame,
pre CW are not scarce.
Would love to See More of your Finds!! HH to ya ;D

I found a silver badge about this size but not coin silver. It had a mans name on it. I was told it was a voteing badge. That people back in the old days would wear the little badges in honor of their canidate who was running for Sheriff. I don't think this was a real badge, but who knows? Yes the Olde Texas Rangers badges were made from Mexican silver coins. I wonder if this was a Mason badge because it is made to wear up side down?
