I found a King George II Half Penny today when I was was scanning a fireplace foundation wall. It was a common practice to place a coin in the foundation of a newly constructed home to bring the home owner good luck. Not sure when the house was built. Probably around the late 1700 or early 1800's. I did scratch the coin when I removed it from the wall. I did some light cleaning on the coin to try to get a date. Maybe 1760?

Not sure if I want want to keep the coin or put it back at the house in the wall somewhere. I think about the person that placed the coin in the wall over 200 years ago would probably want it keep at the house.

Well done.
That is an old head George II, so it was minted 1740 to 1754

I couldn't be sure from the picture whether it was old bust or young bust, but the King’s name was spelled ‘GEORGIUS’ rather than ‘GEORGIVS’ during the period from 1740-1745 (using the old bust portrait) and I see a ‘V’ not a ‘U’. So, if it is old bust it will be 1746-1754.

I did some more cleaning to try to get a date, but I can not make out what the date is.

If you can, go back a take a good picture of the remaining walls with the surrounding area, then keep the coin a picture together, kind of a really neat display. If someday those walls were knocked down in order to develop something, it would most likely be lost and gone forever.

Great find. I too would choose to keep it. Hopefully it brought the previous owner good luck. Now its your turn!

Sure looks like a 1760 to me also. Counterfeit maybe?

You could be right cudamark. I took it to a local dealer and he said it looks casts [pot marks in metal] and the date is to large and wrong. The weight is 7.2g.
A George 2 typically weighs around 10.4 grams.
