Wellcome.

A tribute to the passing away of a friend?

The last name "Sandoval" is used by some Indians, of course it came from the Spanish. The way it is carved on the wall suggest to me that a different variation of the same name was used, or a friend not sure how to spell it sounded it out, San-do-ball. :dontknow:

A tribute from Mike to his friend Pablo.

This is just my novice opinion. :coffee2:

I am pretty much in agreeancewith Mario on this one guys.
An early 19teens gesture of respect for one cowboy from another.
(along with some native rock art)

I'll bet this cliff face is facing east !!

Mario,
If there is an "X" in the middle of a word the Spanish alphabet code takes over.
"X" = 10 always

Thom, if the "X" is used in conjunction with other letters, must you also use other letters to arrive at distance?

Of course. Each letter has an associated number as well.
Go back and grab that Spanish alphabet code I posted... see what happens.
make sure the rules are used especially for double letters and see if some decent numbers come out.
the spaces and breaks begin a new number dots will always add one,
double letters always double the total of the two after adding ... "BB" =2+2=4x2 etc
Last of all the total for this bunch is in Spanish feet as it is on a vertical surface.

here is the alphabet code with rules...

Here in my estimation is about the best representation of the Spanish alphabetical coding system. note which letters they left out and why (very important).

A=1
B=2
C=3
CH- not used C=3, H=9 3+9=12
D=5
E=6
F=7
G=8
H=9
I=1 or 2 Roman Numeral 1, unless it has a dot over it for a value of 2
J=11
K=12
L=13
LL- not used Lx2 =13+13 or 26x2=52
M=15
N=16
~N=17
O=18
P=19
Q=20
R=21
RR=not used 21+21=42x2=84
S=22
T=23
U=24
V=5 Roman Numeral 5
X=10 Roman Numeral 10
Y=27
Z=28

THESE ARE RULES,
They are universal to be used when encountering letters and numbers in the field.
Note,
Double letters are not used in the code but are considered as single letters doubled. When two of the same letter are together the value of the two is doubled.

Note.
If a letter is broken, it may be a combination of two letters. or it may be a letter like an M or an N that is written in lower case. the number of pieces it is broken into is what determines the total value of a letter.
If an M is in three pieces the value is tripled, an N broken into two pieces will double the value...example

m-20101208.jpg

15+15+15=45

Often you may find Roman numerals combined to make a letter such as I and V combined to make an N. ... I=1, V=5 1+5=6 ... 6=E. N+E == Northeast.
often a letter may be made of several letters combined to create a figure.
It is important to recognize these and be able to decipher the numerical values.

Thom,

Very nice of you to share.

I always appreciate when you are here.... or there.
If you leave us alone we will become legends in our own mind.
If you leave us with a piece of string we will make a rope and Hang ourselves with it.

I appreciate your supervision.

Just saying thank you.

To all who have PMed and thanked me for reposting the alphabet...
Or posted thanks Like Mario.
You are all very welcome.

Please note
The KGC alphabet code is very different as it uses the English alphabet "Z=26"

In regards to Key's book,
I had a copy once... My Husky ate it.

A short reply to posts else where and several PMs as well as emails regarding extra add on type signs.
These are things that weren't needed by the Spanish.
The things they used to use for navigation were HUGE and are still looked at today as curiosity points in our landscape.
Many are on maps still to this day.

I don't think anyone says more than is pertinent. but there again I won't lay out anything knowingly to mislead, harm or injure anyone. Many time Have advised caution when following my directions as a side note.
The Spanish were cautious and very devious The reason we discuss here is to further understand what they laid out and why.
If I sound skeptical it is usually because much of what is being shown has been tried and expounded on by myself or others before to no avail.

The simplicity I speak of is without fail one of the things that even the king insisted on.These signs and symbols along with the royal rules worked so well that they didn't change them in more than 300 years.
That being the fact ... doing things their way instead of inventing new ways to endanger ourselves is the smart way to enjoy this hobby.

We look at all the redundancy and repetition the employed and start to think they were morons, or at least impaired. When in reality they were ensuring by adhering to the rules that the trail would last for years. After they had been here a while they were more than well versed in the signs. They were able to read them and know them on sight. They didn't need any add on signs and didn't leave them.
Don't be lulled into the state of mind that these guys were stupid, as their cunning and intelligence will sneak up and bite you right in your fuzzy butt.

always look for confirmation on the add on sign to confirm that it isn't natural before incorporating it into your trail, (one of the first royal rules).

Diplomacy isn't always my long suit.
for that I apologize.

so when a post is as blunt as this it isn't meant as an affront, but as an informative measure. Please understand that. I mean no bent feelers.

"Diplomacy isn't always my long suit.
for that I apologize"

I was working in a small plastic injection molding company, with its own machine shop, years back. Art was the machinist.

I was`t production supervisor yet. When time allowed, I would help Art in the machine chop. Art would probably not agree, as I being any help.

One time after I did something wrong. I did not know I had done anything wrong. Even to this day I don`t do anything wrong.Lol

Anyway, Art was talking to me for a while, like he always did, accept this time as I walked away, he said, by the way... you just got a talking too.

To this day I have never been disarmed that way, like Art did to me that day. I did not defend myself because I did not know I was being attacked. In my ignorance I would have persieved it as an attack.

I felt ripped off for a while until I begun to appreciate his wisdom.

I hope this made some sense.

Old dog, no need to apologize, your words are always welcome.

This is not from me.. "A wise man listens and learns".

Mario,
I do have to add...
I am here to help only.
Not solve your puzzle for you.
To solve it yourself gives confidence and the greatest feeling of accomplishment there is.
If someone else solves the puzzle you are working on it's kind of like being robbed.
I am not here to take from anyone that feeling.

Well stated Thom.
Though most of what I know was learned through the generosity of the people here, it's a real feeling of accomplishment when I find a hidy hole or vault by following the signs.
Now if I could find one that wasn't already open...

Keep Looking Jim,
After 200 years of others looking ...
I figure 1 cache in 100 will still be there.
you will need to be good, because the really easy ones are almost all gone.

Wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for this space that Marc has granted us use of,
I am most thankful for all of you.
