I went back to the swimming hole sifting sand through classifiers like I did last summer...it was all posted here at the time in multiple posts. It produced 7 silvers, about 50 dollars in clad, silver jewelry, and two gold rings. No detector.

Some history behind this place.... it was a rock quarry at one point and also a grist mill in the 1800s. At the library the only stuff I could find was references to the quarry and that the granite grinding wheel was found when it was being turned into a park. This was in a newspaper clipping from 1954 I think. They turned the wheel into a picnic table.

Well, I had to get through a years worth of gravel and trash since last summer to get down to the old layer....the 1800s layer. This is where I left off last year and unfortunately dont think I'll be able to go much further.

I found the old gear that was not found when the stone wheel was found. Its 20 inches wide and 5 inches thick. Solid cast iron. Should I have left it? I'm not going to do a thing with it....but it's a piece of history being over 120 years old.
Didn't want to just leave it there homeless....so I rolled it very slowly to my truck. Two person lift required.

Anyway, on the way to that layer I found a sterling ring that was deposited since last summer. It used to be gold plated.

Everything else I found .....
Old square nails/grist mill hardware top right. Clad bottom right. Sharp glass and other crap also removed from the water supply.

I would have kept it and taken it home too......provided I could get it into the truck! I think I would have removed the rocks before I attempted to lift it however! :laughing7:

There was a 1877 seated dime found on top of it last year...that thing is a natural trap. Thought I would dislodge everything at home.

I would have brought it home. I know where there is one in the woods but its way bigger. I'm tempted to go in there with the tractor and pull it out.

But....what would you do with it? Maybe we can make a snow man out of them...

I have a barn that I'm fixing up into a machine shop. It would look cool bolted to the wall

Haha, I'll give you a hand holding it up

I guess I'll try to find a use for it, I was thinking about maybe seeing if the museum here wanted it.

Build a cradle for it .. it would make a great yard display.

Two tnetters mentioned yard display, yard display it is lol

With a proper center pipe - Indoor display - base for floor lamp - Outside - Bird feeder/house base -

Cool item!!!!!!!

Yeah, definitely would have taken it as well. Aside from being personally interesting, fans of the steampunk aesthetic would pay well more than scrap for something like that. Good score!

i take almost everything home, then decide what to do with it,one time i left a old can that someone made it to a coffee cup using baling wire,i thought about that dam can for a year,200 miles later i went back and found it,it now sits on my tv to remind me just been it all home.

Make a small table top out of it.Get a round piece of glass to go on top of the gear.
