Video - Journey to the Bat Cave

I know, I'll just dare someone else to take on a dangerous task while I sit in my comfy chair at home and wait for video to be posted online...

Do it yourself, or stop expecting others to do it. Its just that simple.

We have far too many armchair commenters, and far too few people like Ryan who actually go do things.

Extremely fortunate to be carrying those masks when they set off on the boat and were not expecting to find a cave full of Guano :icon_scratch:

You should go back and watch the episode again when they show the cave from the river bed below.

1st scene - Metal ladder there and attached

2nd scene - Metal Ladder gone and hidden

3rd Scene - Metal Ladder is back and attached.

Guys get up top and now metal ladder is hiding behind a rock.

Guys carry ladder to attach to wood ladder

Pan out, metal ladder gone again.

"The Deal" puts on mask, change scenes mask is gone and he climbs up ladder without it!

Oops - editing boo-boo's from GGL!

RG I hope you don't think I am knocking you one bit. I think what you did is most excellent and truly appreciate the effort you made. That ladder does look pretty sketchy and maybe I am just flattering myself by thinking I would climb it. Funny to think that there are bat-geeks around somewhere with pictures and videos of the entire cave while we go on page after page...

I couldn't agree more! Why is that?

Frank, BTW, that was a great shot of Deleel at the top of the ladder. It was by far the best evidence I have seen to date that Deelel made it to the top of the ladder. I did watch the last show, but my recall on several scenes was fuzzy.:)

I still have another question and I'm not sure Frank is free to respond?

Did one of the film crew also climb the ladder or did Eric take some video in the cave?

Thanks,

Garry

Eric had a Go-Pro attached to a chest harness that we can see in the episode.

Also, Wayne Tuttle did a radio interview where he said Eric went up there and shot all of that by himself. Link to that radio interview is somewhere on the forum listing page here on Tnet, posted by me.

When I watched episode 6 I was shocked to see Deal climb that ladder. I called him and asked. He did it alone and without any safety lines. In the canyon near the barb wire fence I had to shoot a greenie that went after Deal. You need to be very careful in the grass near the water.

Check out the detail of the ladder in these pics, not sure if they have been posted elsewhere.

The comments are insightful as well.

"I think some curious peps really wanted to check the cave out so they built this ladder, loaded into there boats, and then boated to the inlet for Crucifix canyon and hiked it up the slope. The bottom section is metal, though there's a good 5-6 other metal sections scattered in the creek bottom and up the slope. They must weigh a few hundred pounds and they gave up due to the weight and just left the lighter but less secure wooden on in place... "

Thanks again for the show, Frank! Looking forward to Season 2! (whenever it starts up again).

But yeah, I almost got bit once in Cali by a rattler, and it was near water. Luckily I saw it before I got right on top of it on the path I was walking on. What made it worse was I was in the sunlight and it was under some trees and it was a shaded area, and was more difficult for my eyes to adjust from being in the bright sunlight with the sun in my eyes, and to a darker area where it was located.

Great post!

here is a thought.....

if the FS guy left that note in 2010, asking who built the ladder and why, perhaps it had not been there that long?
Surely he would have said to his colleagues, "hey there's a ladder back in that canyon" and they would have replied "its been there 100 years for the old guano" etc etc....?

seems strange to me that NOT ONE PERSON knows the history of it, not even the officials who "patrol" the area and have done for decades?

just my Limey 2 pennies worth....!

Kollenborn recalls, on another forum, of being out at the Bat Cave about 1998-1999. Somehiker, a member here, has been there as well sometime around 2010.

Just because someone leaves a note, and says they are with the FS, or any other agency, doesn't mean thats who they are! I could have written the same note to try and fish for information.

Once again, to clarify- Bill had left a note asking the person using it recently, to get back to him. I think all this confusion is arising from a joke that Somehiker made at the time.

And yes, that note was left by the FS, specifically by Bill Burger of the Ariz G & F dept. He had (or still is) been taking count of the bat population at that site since the early 90's. It went down from 40k to a mere 4k in just a decade.

@deducer

Is that anywhere on a .gov website that I (you) can link here so we can try to put an end to this part of the "legend"?

Thank you!!

how was he counting bats if he'd never been up there :dontknow:

I believe he has been up there.

A lot more people have been up there than the show would have you believe.
