VA saying Vets with PTSD unable to own guns

[h=2]Veterans are now in danger of losing an important civil right[/h]Many of America’s warriors are now receiving a chilling letter from the VA notifying them that they may have their ability to conduct their financial affairs placed in the hands of someone approved by the government. That is not all they would lose if they are declared incompetent to handle their finances. According to the letter they would also lose their right to own a firearm. Possession of arms and/or ammunition will, according to the VA, result in fines and prison time. What puts a veteran on the list of incompetents? The VA will not share the details of the process, but those who are subject to the loss of their rights are allowed to challenge the finding through a lengthy and expensive appeals process.

Rebel, it seems it just did..........

NOT yet! Veterans Administration is TOTALLY Fed funded; Vets with Disabilities get SSDI... TOTALLY Fed Funded; Violation of Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (USDoJ). DAV, Wounded Warriors are on this NOW!

Crispin, what I am saying is the VA should have to at least cite a reason to deny. Or do I have inaccurate info?

The VA has been taking the right of SOME vets to manage their government given funds for at least a dozen years. this is nothing new. I know this first hand because I have given expert testimony on this at least a hundred times. It is not something taken lightly...believe me. I get grilled on the stand every time. My guess is they are just throwing the gun thing in because of all the stuff in the media. I seriously doubt there is much merit to that. However, if you cannot manage your money...you should not have access to guns. A fiduciary is another way of saying Guardian advocate. People with a guardian advocate can not consent to or give permission for medical decisions. If you cannot decide on medical decisions for yourself then you should not be able to own a gun. This is really common sense...no logical person is going to disagree with this. Don't let the media manipulate you...I am an expert on this.

AGREE! And TRUST you!

Your information is accurate. However, this has been going on for years and years. They are manipulating it by saying "many vets are now." Yes, of course, they are now and have been for 20 years...manipulating language. It is almost like a standard release paper. Some vets get up to 4,000 dollars a month for their service connection...and well deserved! In layman's terms they are saying this, "If you are found to be stark raving mad then we are not going to let you spend your money on drugs and prostitutes. And one more thing, you can't own a gun either." To have this done to a vet is a ridiculously difficult process. When I am on the stand the defense for the Vet comes at me like a ton of bricks. Take any attack you have seen on TNET and multiply it by 10. I would not have it any other way. However, these people are sick. A judge makes the decision and they do not do it lightly. This is nonsense propaganda targeted at people who support vets. Rebel and I support vets to the nth degree. If somebody comes after vets then they come after the two of us. This is manipulative nonsense.

i didnt say anything about a vet you ask me to define crazy i know alot people that only hear or read what they want to hear thats a sign of being bipolar

Crispin, if you haven't read this article yet, please do so. I'm sure it may be nothing you don't already know, and I may be preaching to the choir, but I hope it can arm you, me, us, and others with understandings and insights.
'I'm a monster': Veterans 'alone' in their guilt - Yahoo! News

My father, being a sufferer of fear PTSD, needed help and was getting it from the Lake city Fl VA. It was 40 - 50 yrs after his two wars, this monster raised it's head within him. He was lucky (to recognize what was happening, find compassion among doctors, and seek help). Many are not so lucky. My father was also an advocate for vets, having written many letters and interceding to politicians on behalf of his brothers, that had difficulty at times, finding their own appropriate voice. We CANNOT turn our backs on these people now. They stood up and for us, when many did not even recognize their sacrifice. We have come a long way (since Nam), but not far enough. Let's work together, to try and rectify these wrongs. I am sorry for the actions of some of my fellow citizens.

If you have not been there (wars, traumas, extreme violence) you may not understand. It is up to everyone, imho, to be informed, so that we may act and react to our brothers and sisters with care, compassion, and understanding.
Some have absolutly NO IDEA, they are either blessed or cursed in that, the jury is still out.

I accept your apology. Lets just drop it. I don't need a lecture from you on what bipolar is. I'm waving the white flag over here...seriously. BTW: check on my other thread...we are always looking for new members.

Yup, dropping it as well. :occasion14:

I have served our vets at the Lake City VA. I was honored to do so.

I am a vet of both wars and have over 3 years of combat time as a cav scout just so you no I didn't sit behind a desk. I'm currently getting out of the ARMY after 9 years and have Been diagnosed with sever PTSD the only ones other than my wife and mom and dad that know this is now every one on here but I have to say something. I'm not crazy I have lots of guns and enjoy shooting hunting and self protection and I don't beat my wife and kids and I don't run around naked down the street shooting in the air . So F off if you say crap that you don't understand

crazy someone who go's off to easy, someone that is unstable, people that beat on there wives and kids, even the ones that have PTSD they are really unstable

You need to educate yourself

I believe it really has nothing to do with PTSD,It more likely has to do with veterans earmarked as being under suspicion of being domestic terrorists.

And your right a government that is thinking of doing crazy crap would not want us that have years of unconventional warfare training to have guns that could stop them.

Thank you for your service! I cannot establish a doctor-patient relationship; however, I can point in the right direction. If you are suffering from symptoms, please send either me or Rebel a PM. We can help guide you. It is the least we can do.

recondigger, thank you for your service and sacrifice. Thank your family as well, they too have sacrificed.
Do reach out to those that have "been there, done that", they would/should be the most knowledgable in the hadling of these things.
You are not alone, though it may feel like it at times. Hang in there, and reach for the higher and mightier recondigger, that we know lies buried inside of you, somewhere.
And this too, you can overcome.
Love and peace.
