Ya I couldn't believe i found either. Started hunting an old stage coach area and stumbled across an Eagle button in the middle of the road. Further up started detecting in the brush and eyeball this baby sticking out of the ground. I dont have much faith that it is CW period, more like WW1 or 2 but none the less it is a navy peacoat with almost all the buttons still attached. Was wondering if anyone has an age approx or vaule. Thanks for the help!

The coat may be older than you think. Some of the South Jersey region's soil can be very kind to old cloth, especially the sandy pine regions. One of my oldest buttons, which pre dates 1800, still had the threads attached when I pulled it out of the ground. The fact that the backs are corroded away, however, makes me think the button is post WWI.

I agree that it is one of the most unique finds I have seen on TNet!

If you found this anywhere in south NJ, we have a Weapons Station in Earl NJ that most folks know as Leonardo. Been there for ever, and the Navy definitely made many a call there to load out. The buttons appear to me to be those off of the Chiefs or Officers Khaki uniform that was worn in the 40's and earlier. I retired as a Chief and believe the fouled anchor from the pea coat type button would have belonged to a junior sailor, because chiefs and above wore gold buttons on those. Just my two cents, but that could be a WWI or II authentic.

Um...creepy. I'd let the police know just in case someone's been missing for awhile.

That two button belt which went on the back of the coat, suggest that it is either a bridge coat, or a reefer. The current version doesn't have buttons on the lapels. Don't know about the earlier versions.

Additionally, the lapels on your coat appear to be pretty narrow. Navy uniforms followed that trend with fashion to a degree. Find a period in the last 8-9 decades when narrow lapels were in style, and you will likely narrow down the age of the garment.

Wow, what a fab find!!!

I have a button like yours...here it be:

(I would SWEAR this one is wood!!!!)

This is similar to the buttons on some leftover Navy, blue utilities I had when discharged in 1975.
regular Navy work clothes.

All the backs are rusted,...
Someone mentioned on another post that the US would never put a metal back that would rust on a Navy button. If this is true, then it rules out the US Navy.

Even though hippies wore old military surplus because it was inexpensive, this appears to be a civilian hippie jacket. (with the rusted button backs).

That is an excellent point. It is true that the backs of 2 piece buttons will not rust. I remember my father had an old WWII army jacket that had the buttons swapped for "fakes" when he took it to the dry cleaner.

If it has a lot of stains on it,you may want the police to take a look at it.Someone, for some reason ditched that coat there. It's very rare a pea coat gets tossed.

is there any re-enacment sites around? Probably should find that out before judging the date. It might be from a re-enacment. Just my guess.
