Ya I couldn't believe i found either. Started hunting an old stage coach area and stumbled across an Eagle button in the middle of the road. Further up started detecting in the brush and eyeball this baby sticking out of the ground. I dont have much faith that it is CW period, more like WW1 or 2 but none the less it is a navy peacoat with almost all the buttons still attached. Was wondering if anyone has an age approx or vaule. Thanks for the help!

I find the coat a rather strange find.

I doubt that it was purposely discarded. It would have been a nice coat at that time and if it was I think that it's odd that the buttons were not taken off, people just did not throw buttons away. They would be taken off and the garment cut up for rags.

Is there a military base around the area where you found it?

Perhaps, a military person, went AWOL and did discard it for obvious reasons.

Foul PLay?

And why would one button be found away from the coat?

Maybe you should buy some Luminol and do a blood test. (about $15.00 on line)

No military base around. It was found on an old stage coach road. The button i found in the road I dont think even belonged on this uniform but was a very similiar button. Didn't find any limbs attached to the jacket so im thinking there was no body there :tard: The stage coach road dates back to the 1700's i believe. Still a mystery to me that I and no one here can find an exact match to the buttons.

Dont give up, someone will know. The buttons look old to me. Are they plated or gilded? Can you get anything off the backs or are they all rusted? Can you go back and search some more?

Well, you could do that. One day ( my brother, the long hair) was hitch-hiking with his friends to harvest a crop in W.Va. and they got picked up by a local old farmer. They thought that they were just getting a ride to the area where their crop was planted. The farmer took them to another farmer's barn, where a buncha locals were waiting, They said that they didn't like longhairs messin' around in their town, so they held all them down , shaved their heads bald, took all their hippie clothes, then drove them back to where the "old guy" picked them up and kicked out of the truck bed and told them to get the H_L_ outta town and don't let them ever see ya back, or they won't be so lucky the next time! By the way....They never did go back! This same thing may have happened to the dude that, that coat used to belong to..........NGE

Go post a pic of the buttons on the button forum

Hippies wore old military coats with brass buttons but they were usually authentic because WWII or WWI surplus was very cheap at the time.

My mother has some buttons that look like the black one with an anchor on it.
They came from a WW2 navy pea coat that she wore when she was pregnant with me.
That's been a few years ago...

What a great find. It's amazing that it stayed in as good a shape as it is, all these years. What kept if from totally rotting?

Why would you know that? :tard:

Damn! I forgot about the Air Force Coppers on this site.

They are worse the Jack Boot Thug types :tongue3: :tard:

I was in the Navy from 1983 to 1990, My peacoat had metal buttons identical to those, but while I was still on active duty they switched to the plastic buttons. If it has plastic buttons it would be after 1985 or so. I remember having to cut all the buttons from my coat and sew on all new plastic buttons to keep uniformity with the newer issued coats (it was ordered to do so). I would think since there was an odd button on it, the person who lost it was not on Active Duty or they would have been reprimanded for having a mismatched button

I would guess the coat is from the mid 80's simply based on both buttons being available at that time.

Take a piece of the inside collar, and have it tested for drugs, if it is positive ;D, then you have a hippie generation pea-coat, since the collar area would be where some sweat was produced :tongue7:.......NGE

:help:

i found the button on the waterbury site...no information on it's use? eagle is the same as marine, anchor is backwards?

Thanks for the replies guys. Not sure what kept it in good shape. Maybe the fact that it is not old at all possibly. Who knows? Still havn't seen the exact button like the ones on the coat though very strange.
