TWO SIGNS LEFT TO I.D. MINE, AS SPANISH, FRENCH, OR JESUIT.

Ouch, Soooo, that vendor guy actually took it 'at litteram' ? or is it that maybe the Iraqis know something that we don't? lol
Maybe some kind of new Shaorma or Shish-Kebob that we're missing on. Maybe a new delicacy in the Cradle of Civilization that we're totally unaware of...?
Too funny. (or just me hoping, that the iraqi guy just pulled one on you son, but not the real thing)

Nope. It really did happen!!

No USDA nor Health inspections!!

The equivalent to eating a “sky rat”

Certainly not the worst thing to happen to him, while he was there...

Well, here it is. The short cut.... Almost nothing but pictures, view, with almost none of the wisdom picked up along the way, path that will let you see the path that we have walked.

You still have to work a little bit. It's mostly just the photos that I made until Weekender joined me, and then mostly his photos.

Copy and paste this list where you can find it, then enjoy...

Post numbers .....

It's just a sketch pad. 76 pages....

If you want to know what I learned along the way, you gotta read between the pictures.

There has been a lot of knowledge and wisdom handed out over the years. I am grateful for all of it, and I recommend the slow read.

I-40 is nice, when you have to get there, Route 66 has so much to give.....

Mikel, your Route 66 has got some beautiful landscapes. I bet the air is fresh too. That's what I would name quality time. Life well spent.

Been on a bit of it on both sides of the Mississippi. Good road when you aren’t in a hurry.

Seems like we’ve finally raised that generation of idiots that Einstein predicted nearly a century ago.

It’s getting harder to teach the younger folks about the old ways.

They will need them someday soon.

Nothing so intellectual as that.

Just small screen, old eyes and autocorrect running away with my typing.

Switching from laptop to write my story, and phone for posting...

Causing problems on both ends...

Bountiful blessings and
Happy Thanksgiving [emoji260]🦃🍽
To all of my TNET family!!!

We do it all over again on Saturday, you probably remember why, but then it does take us two days to count our blessings. Hope you all had a good one.

Homar

That’s wonderful, Homar! You are truly blessed.
We made ours very simple. I told my wife that I would make my homemade chicken pot pie 🥧. She has been wanting it for a couple of years now.

So I took over the kitchen for three hours and kept four burners and the oven going. I don’t think I’ll do it again soon...

But, it was a blessing, to have the strength to pull it off.

Then the Christmas shopping began!

I miss the old days when stores closed for Thanksgiving, until Saturday, at least!

Our daughter set up the Christmas tree [emoji319] and the cats have found a new home in it.

It will be an interesting month!!

So now, it’s Merry Christmas![emoji319]

Su amigo.
Mikel

A little more research on the French verses Spanish in our area...

With a little ( lot ) help from my TNET family.

While tracking the French Jesuits and Franciscans that traveled close to me and Weekender’s area, I noticed that most French Crosses, that were in the time parameters, almost always used the “Fluer-De-Lis” to dress them up, whereas the Spanish used the diamond shape.

Combining that information to the crosses and noting the amount of Spanish influences, has removed all doubts that our site is the work of Spanish explores.

Up until today, I have hated sitting in roadwork [emoji616] traffic.

Today I was stopped at a spot that I have driven through for forty five years, without noticing this...

A new metal detector hunting spot!

Now I need to find out who owns it...

#/;0{>~

It’s just a set of stairs,so far.

But satellite images show’s a short trail to an odd shaped foundation

There hasn’t been a building there since 1972, that know of.

The stairs drop down near the highway and are broken.

I’m pretty sure that there was more room there back in the horse and buggy days... probably has outhouse and chicken house and barn... all in due time..

Get you 1936 Arkansas County Map HERE!

Great resource for learning what was where in 1936 ... and it's accurate!

Shows homesteads, churches, businesses, and MINES.

Yep. It’s amazing how much things change. There is a road on that map that does not exist anymore. Even the new county roads don’t use its footprint.
I think that it may have been a trail from long ago.

I like to think that it might have been the trail that connected Weekender and my site to the Arkansas River. There is a good sized gap to get from the site, to the road but if we made the jump, the rest exists in the other counties .....

Even google earth, doesn’t cast a shadow of a footprint [emoji188] where that map shows that it existed!!

Maybe I should rent a mule and see if it can track it down.

Better yet, maybe I should get that book [emoji433] done and published, and hire someone else to do that.

I’d laugh at that joke, if I weren’t choking on details.... Only a few more answers for these old eyes [emoji102] to focus on.

Yeah, lots of stuff changes that we may never have noticed.

The city of Wilmot, Arkansas shows up on the 1936 map on the wrong side of Bayou Bartholemew. I'm not from here, so I figured it was an error in the mapping. My daughter talked to an older friend of mine, and he told her that he used to walk 4 miles to get to the store there when he was a kid. He confirmed that the town was relocated.

You will find locations of farmhouses marked accurately. Locations of churches, cemeteries, mines, etc. If you can do a google earth overlay, you'll be amazed. At that point you can pull GPS information to help in your searches.

Yeah, the 1936 map shows the small town of Aurora, about two miles away from it’s location today... but I knew about it moving , just didn’t know when.

My old partner and I metal detected it about fifteen years ago.

One straight road through town with wooden sidewalks connecting homes and businesses.

There was one old man that bought the land when they decided to move up above the other side of the river, that flooded the town completely off the map, twice, and again when it was hit by a tornado, that even took the school/ Church/ community building that was a hundred yards up a hill.

The concrete steps from the dirt road are still in place and an old iron gate with partial flagstone walkway show where the cornerstones are, along with old well and two outhouses.

I think that is where I found my 1907 Indian head penny.
I had a bunch of pennies that I didn’t clean, from different places over about two years.... bad practice to get into. Not knowing where it came from, taught me to clean every thing separately so I would know where to return for more!!

But it was cool to be able to talk with the one man that stayed.
He remembered where each business was, including the livery stable with the stump where the anvil was mounted.

It was unreal to be able to put my finger in the holes where the spikes were that held the anvil in place.

Not to mention walk the paths that are under the old boardwalks.

Most folks locally don’t know about the old town.

The spot that I photographed doesn’t show anything on the old map...
But something was there. I hope that it was an old store. There’s an old store a few hundred yards away from it where folks could park off the road and even had a gas pump and a pad for the above ground tank.

Old board floors let coins fall through cracks. Could be some cool finds!!

I had that old map saved in my old laptop that died on me... I’m pretty sure that it came from you, back then.

Thanks for bringing it back...

Yep, but it could have been built after 1936 or removed before 1936. Some structures are well built ... others, not so well.

Speaking of old wooden floors, wish I could have been there when they tore down my grandfather's old house in Metairie, LA. I remember us grandkids dropping lots of wheat cents, Indians, dimes, even a few quarters before 1964 that fell through the cracks in his old wooden floors.

You might check to see if there are county records if you're really interested. On ACTDATASCOUT (click to visit) for my county, I can show ownership for my land parcel back to 1914 (not long before the courthouse and records burned), so you might find an answer there. It's free, but I think you do have to make an account there.
