Treasure Expo 2007

Thanks Peg Leg,
I have some friends working on it for you. I am told that the sheild is upside down in the pic. Rounded end of sheild is the top of the coin. The initials of the mint would be on the left which is worn. It is a hand stamped spanish cob. The initials on the right would be the ruler when it was stamped and the initials of the country, S for spain. That is what I am told.

My thought:
Perhaps the guy had too much rum and put a B and then changed it to P for Phillip.
Any old way, My friends are working on it. I gave them the link here.

My rooms are reserved for the Expo. Rusty Sailor can not get off work because he requested August and can't change it. I will be there with my sister, sister-in-law, and brother. Looking forward to meeting you in person. We should have name tags with our T-Net names on them.

Peg, I think Maxjda found it for you....look at this

http://www.rsoperations.com/Treasure/Coins/Coins.htm
as the metal recovered from mines in America was usually shipped to the mother country in the form of ingots or crude, temporary coins called macuquinas.

Known in English as “cobs,” these coins were made by simply refining the ore to slightly over 90% fineness, rolling it like cookie dough into a rod shape, and then slicing off pieces to form crude flans. These were trimmed with scissors to the prescribed weight and coined by the ancient hammer method. One die was mounted on an anvil, the flan was placed atop it, and the other die was suspended above the flan with tongs. A heavy blow or two from a sledge hammer impressed the design into both sides of the flan to form the coin. Given their crude method of manufacture, it’s not surprising that cobs are usually found irregularly shaped and with only partially visible designs. Dating and attributing these coins takes an experienced numismatist, and their collecting is usually limited to those having a deep interest in history.

Cobs, like the ingots that accompanied them from America to Spain, were simply a means of accounting for the silver and gold extracted from the colonial mines. This was critical, as the king was entitled by law to twenty percent of the treasure—the “royal fifth,” which was paid to him as tribute. Since cobs were of a temporary nature and quite awkward to handle, they were not generally used as a circulating currency. Most were melted upon arrival in Europe and recoined into more conventional issues. Those which have survived intact were almost certainly recovered from the wrecks of ships bound for Spain. The minting of cobs ended by the middle of the 18th Century.

To meet the needs of those living in Spain’s American colonies, coins of a more practical type were minted as early as 1536, one year after a mint was established at Mexico City. Coinage commenced at Lima, Peru in 1768, and additional mints followed at Potosi in Bolivia, at Bogota in Colombia and at Santiago in Chile. Several lesser mints flared up briefly, producing only cobs. The

Hope this Treasure Expo has a great turn out, And donating money to Down Syndrome was a great choice.

Morning Rusty Mate,
Check out both photos and you can see there is a BIG difference between the coins.
The coin you show is a much later date.
The coin that I presented is not in reversed is exactly like it appears.

Seems as though my comment was unappreciative.

You have put togeather a event that alot of people will enjoy, myself included i plan on being back in cocoa beach the end of July,There will be alot of people there with so much knowledge to offer and treasures to show,

You plan on having a plane fly a banner, These sales people make it sound great, but the sad truth is i cant see where it will generate the people to want to leave the sand and water and go to the holiday inn, They tell you 150,000 will see the banner, I don't see that happening between satellite beach and cocoa beach,This is not a major weekend like the 4th where there would be 150,000 thousand on the beach,There into making money and they will always say the words you want to hear, The same few thousand people on the beach will look at it as it makes its fly by with the sun in the peoples eye's that time of day, I have watched these planes on weekends, and around 11 your dealing with the sun.

You have put alot of effort into this wonderfull event for Brevard County, Seems like that money could be saved on erecting some signs at major intersections at 520 A1A Cocoa Beach, And also around port Canaveral a few weeks prior to the event, Again thank you for bringing a treasure expo to brevard county.

Ronald99,
I understood everything you are saying.
Here is something Else.
I contacted the local DOWN SYNDROME ORGANISTATION about getting them involved.
I told them that I would give them 100% of all the money collected from the RAFFLE of the Gold Coin and 10% of the sale of the T-Shirts AND 10% of all the gate receipts.
All I asked in return was permission to use their LOGO and if they would contact the NEWS MEDIA and put this information over the Radio and T.V. Stations as a Public Service Announcement.
THEY REFUSED and gave me another Charity Organisation to contact.
ALL I needed was some kind of effort on their part and a little help with a few volunteers. They thought about this for a few days and then said NO THANKS.
So my friend I am STILL going to give 100% of the money collected from the sale of the coin to SOME DOWN SYNDROME ORGANISTATION and it dos matter where they may be.
My Grandson has DS and he is only 16 months old.
YES I am serious as you can see and YES I apprecicate everything you have presented.
I am also having POSTER printed to place all up and down A1A.
I am also doing a BANNER to be placed on front of the Holiday Inn.
I have also given out 1500 flyers with another 1500 to go.
You must also understand that I am only one person with one leg and i CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH AT A TIME.
OH, I have also sent out 2200 emails.
The FLYING BANNER was my thought and did not cost all that much.
If you know a few people who want to help let me know.
Thanks
Don Webb

My prayers go out to your grandson, and all others that have Down Syndrome, or any other form.

For a man with one leg, You seem to outwork most with two,

That old saying' I'm a one legged man in a ass kicking competion, comes true

Good luck Peg Leg, Have you considered contacting Kellyco since there so close and see if they would be interested bringing some detectors and they also have alot of Spanish coins and silver bars and other Spanish treasure. Just a thought.

Ronald99

Yes I have contacted Kellyco SEVERAL times. I even talked with Bob Cole. He told me that he had turned this over to another but this OTHER PERSON never followed through. I have even sent more emails since then with no return answer.Kellyco is missing a Great chance to show what they have available.
Their lost.

Hi Peg Leg,
I just noticed this:
Check out both photos and you can see there is a BIG difference between the coins.

The coin you have seems to be VERY rare. I can't find any comparison. I've had several friends helping me look also. Nothing. It seems what you state here is as close as you can get without an archeologist.
Looking forward to the whole event.

Met with the Holiday Inn Management this morning and got an extension on the reservation time.
The LAST day for a DISCOUNT on rooms is now JULY 6-BUT THAT IS THE LAST DATE DISCOUNTS WILL BE GIVEN.

I have been looking for information concerning the Gold Coin and information I received.
Thanks everyone.

Today I found out something else.
I took the 2 Emeralds to Bailys Jewelers in Cocoa Village.
The large Emerald was .76 karats.
The small one was .46 karats.
Normally when faceting preciuos stones you can estimate losing about 60%.
BUT since both these stones are in such fine shape it was estimated that the lose would only be about 20% total.
Providing the stones were cut in the old fashion shape.
HOWEVER I asked how they would look just polished and what would they be worth.
His answer surprised me.
He said about twice what the gold coin I showed him.
The little Emerald will go as a Door Prize.
The big emerald will be RAFFLED AT $1.00 PER TICKET.
YEA, I know its always about MONEY ::) ;D
PEG LEG

Don, That's great news. I hope some of the other treasure hunters let loose with some of their goodies. The money will be going to a great cause.

Don is the escudo and the emerald going to be on the same raffle ticket or will their be two different raffles. Thanks for the time. Norman

TWO different Raffles.
This way there can be 2 different winners.
Peg Leg

OK I cannot be there but I want to enter both raffles, do I just send you the money and have you send me tickets for both raffles.
