Too Hot to Dig...

Shortstack,

My Owl is the shape of the hoyo(s) in the center. The "old face" appears to be looking at the other hoyo. ( to me looks like a duck?) The faces grouped together seems to morph from evil on the right to good on the left. I took the good trail to the left and arrived at a large hoy
o. I'm posting a pic of the "duck".

Had,

Thanks for your insight. I suffer from tunnel vision sometimes. Interesting to see what I have missed.

Oddrock:
That sure looks like a duck to me, too, from this angle. Also, in this pic you can see the circled dark shape that was hidden by the tree in the previous photo.

hadji and Oddrock:
One other thing about quails. The adult quail will fake injury and try to lead a predator AWAY FROM THEIR NEST, to protect their eggs and chicks. HINT. Might this be a possible false trail?? :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

Or is it only the grouse that does that?? Maybe the quail does NOT do that. Google time!! ;D

Shortstack,

Most mothers, whether birds/mammals/hopefully humans will lay down a false trail away from their young in order to protect them. They are trying to lead the predator away. I have found a few bird s/s that my partner and I interpet as being on the false trail. (the false trail may be easier to follow) Will try to post one if I can locate the pic. They usually have one or both wings down, as broken or hurt.

SS/Had

This is a pic of what I think of as quail/grouse mother in distress. Head to the right, with right wing down. The "arrowhead" shaped rock above and to the right was originally in place as the birds tail with the point, pointing downward......!

Business screwed up my trip for more photos today...maybe later.

I'm thinking the lower left tip of that wing is the pointer. :icon_scratch: That's keeping with the train of thought that the bird would be trying to lead the predator AWAY from it's nest.

Shortstack,

The wing tip pointing in the opposite direction from the beak of the bird is what we took to be the correct direction. (after a whole lot of digging, under the "bird"..(this we did about 15 yrs. ago). We found the "decoy" bird site and thought we were THERE. The rock pointing down, bird laying/setting on a nest of sand, with smooth, oval rocks that we took as the birds eggs....You guys that have dug know the excitement we felt....and.....nothing else there.....what the heck?
HHMMMmmmm...the habits of the mother bird.......oh heck she led us down one of the false trails! I am posting a pic of what I now believe we should interpet as a s/s of "you are following the false trail, you should reverse directions." If we learn from our mistakes then we have gained some more knowledge. I hope this may help someone out there and save you some time in your quest.

Rock,
This has been a good lesson in trail signs. I've read other threads that said when you find a duck figure on a trail, the tip is to go in the opposite direction that it's bill is pointing.
I wonder if ALL bird figures are "read" the same. What about it, Old Dog? Are all birds giving false directions with their bills and eyes??

Shortstack,

So far I have not been sent down the false trail by the owl, the eagle, etc. (only the birds that are preyed upon) :icon_thumleft:

My thought is, with some birds...it depends on their position and pose whether you would follow the bill or something else.

Thanks oddrock for that illustration.

i know that while hunting quail here in IL if you sit and wait they will come to you in single file.brent and they walk everywhere unless flushed.

Desertmoons,

I believe you are right also....most likely every situation is different and depends on the whole picture. If I find a sign of any kind I will search in the direction pointed...be it a beak, a toe, a nose, a xxx, etc. I will also check in the opposite direction. (and the other cardinal ones) Thank you once again for your valuable input.

Had/brent

Do not think I am not checking out your angle on this. (this actual trail is one I just started following recently)

Brent,
I must say NO, not all birds say the same thing. consider the Eagle, the owl and the duck for starters.
There are many situations where a bird could do exactly what Oddrock implies, and lead one on a false trail.
one must look at the attitude of the bird. Same as with a turtle, the positioning and posture tells a story.

HI everyone,
I agree with Old Dog with respect to birds, one 'modifier' is that if a 'regular' bird (not bird of prey)
(AND a IN GROUND HOYO!!) which WAY a bird is looking says MORE than the direction...it says whether the next sign is above ground or below ground........
some very critical data here.
rangler

ps - just a little reminder.. hoyo, a hole thru the rock monument where you can see blue sky
ground hoyo* - hole thru the monument where you only see the ground
hoya, a depression in the rock that outlines the shape

* It is better to look for Confirmation Signs First, before you start marking and looking for signs..IMHO
