Goodnight my fellow Tnet-ians.

wif,

Well most reputable coin dealers provide that service they probably have a volume grading fee with the various groups. Just take good pictures of both sides of the coin to be on the safe side.

Most legit dealers in the U.S. belong to the ANA not sure if the grading companies do any cleaning or not it would probably be considered a conflict of interest.

I had a good friend that has passed now and had started detecting with an old western auto detector tell me of places he sent gold and silver. One was in Texas and the other I can’t recall. Both he said treated him straight up. But the point I’m making is there are people out there there that will treat you honesty. It also helps to know coins, gold or silver to keep them honest.

Thanks! I'll just have to decide what to do.
I'm considering sending in my only banner find. I've shown it to a couple coin people around here and there's a conflict of opinions.

I'd like to feel I've done what I could to identify for sure. Trouble is, when one "expert" tells me one thing I can see why they feel that way. But, when another "expert" starts telling me why the first one is all wet, I can see their point too!

Take a peek at my banner find and maybe someone here would be able to give me another opinion so I can *REALLY* make up my mind! :tongue3:

Dug coins may not be expected to rank as well as others. That said , rarity of course factors.
ANY change to a dug coin can degrade it in a buyers/evaluators eye depending on what they want to see.
(If I make it seem like perspectives vary , how'm I doin?)

A guy I trusted enough (with caution) as a buyer/seller pretty much did not get too excited about dug coins.
One the micro level they are scratched up (usually) and anything but original dug condition earned patina made value less.
Many coins need a bath in water at least. In my opinion. Others are corroded or stained ect..

My favorite silvers get abused badly. Most of the few . By my cleaning them.
I'm not getting them graded or selling them and realize others may not like the pretty shiny silver I like.
But , I keep some uncleaned too. Well , gently water washed/scratched more.

It's up to you like you mentioned.
But the coin will always be worth more to you than any buyer. I 'd guess.
IF you get it graded , what will the grader compare it to? And what will you compare it to?
No other such coin was recovered by you. And none other from that hole. That day. With that detector. Ect. ect.
It's too unique to me for much of a generalized value.
But some one will generalize it for you , for a fee....

I think, what I really want to know is whether it truly is of a rarity version. My eyes are just not good enough to tell anymore. :dontknow:

I probably would never let this one go, regardless. Just would like to know.

Thanks!

Over the years I have seen what some grading services have done. Environmental damage, and the label is slapped on the coin.

Have you a good clear picture of the date?

wif,

Ok I took a look at the coin and other than the staining it appears to be in pretty good shape for the era. That said if you check the pricing on the attached link by PCGS which is pretty much the industry leader in grading.

They list a price of $80 for G4 and $250 for grade 30 which is midway between vf and ef. When they grade the coin they look at it under a high powered microscope for minor scratches, etc...which the coin would have just from being in the ground.

Also if the coin gets cleaned that would probably show up also under magnification. So you'd have the cost of cleaning, registered mail both ways and the grading fee. So even if you lucked out with the higher grade the costs would pretty much eat up most of the coin's value.

That's my humble opinion of the situation. As another option you could always take it to the local coin club for their opinion.
