Rusty, I have a questions for you. Do you have books on teh Civil War? or do you get your knowledge from the internet? If you have books, which one is the most informative?

I have many books, but about half of the information I get comes from internet searching, most often times because I'm trying to nail down info on a certain unit.

North South Trader Civil War is a bi-monthly (if no problems arise) magazine that is the most informative volume of neat stuff in the Civil War collecting field out there. Steve and Nancy Silvia are the publisher/editor team, and they do a fantastic job. Next issue, my button will be in the Recent Finds section. (Not recent, but due to a mistake on my part, I was two years late)

American Digger is the BEST metal detecting bi-monthly magazine out there. Though not specific to the Civil War, there are many great stories from diggers around the world on their adventures. By the way, Butch Holcombe (publisher) is a hilarious guy, you should read his column in the back of the magazine.

My all time favorite book is Gettysburg Battlefield Relics and Souvenirs, by Mike O'Donnell. It is by far, the best publication focusing on the artifacts recovered from Gettysburg ever written, with pictures of thousands of some of the most amazing relics recovered from the field, and highlights local collections of old as well. I read it almost as much as I read my Bible.

A Field Guide To Gettysburg written by Carol Reardon and Tom Vossler, is the BEST publication out there if you want to learn about Gettysburg specifically. There are many maps showing where each unit was, and many stories and play by play narratives on what was happening on the battlefield, and when.

There are many more I would recommend, such as Collecting the Confederacy, Such Troops as These, The Civil War Source Book, The Civil War Battlefield Guide, The Civil War by the Numbers... many great books out there.

I also find that soldier autobiographies and regimental histories are very fun to read. Rebel Private Front and Rear written by William Fletcher, Reminisces of a soldier of the Orphan Brigade, and the History of the 5th West Virginia. There is another book that I highly recommend, The Stone Wall, written by Brad Smiley.

Another favorite is The Killer Angels written by Micheal Sharra.

Oh, and Shiloh, written by Shelby Foote is also a must have.

Well, Rusty, I got to confess. I typed three different posts and deleted the first two, in an attempt to ask the question just the right way. I failed. I should have went with the first one I typed. However, you did answer my question, sort of, and gave me a whole lot more to get started with.

So the original post that I deleted was something like this:

Background: My Great Great Grandfather served as a private in the 95th OVI, Company E. I know that he was mustered in in 1962 and mustered out in 1964. I know that he would have been in the Battle of Richmond.

Do you know where I would be able to find a list of the prisoners names from the battle?

Then, yesterday, I found a little more information on my own about the service of the 95th OVI. I found reports from the officer (s) that refer to lists of men being attached.
Do you know where I can go to find these lists?

I knew you were the right guy to ask. You gave me a lot of good information. Thank you! :hello2:

I found a lot about the battles that the 95th participated in. I don't have it with me at the moment. I remember reading that they were down in Mississippi. Rook, do hunt for CW relics? I must say, it is a weird felling that someone on here could have found relics that my GG Grandfather could have held in his hands at one time.

again, Rusty, Thank you so very much! :love4:

Bill the EQX is still under warranty and I just herd from them.....everything will be worked out and they were super polite and professional. I'll be back in business shortly.....thank you minelab !!

Good morning, Bart. Good to hear you will be all hooked up soon. I'll tell ya, your treasure hunting fever is as bad as MR WD's fishing fever right now!

Well bill....shes going back today to snorkel around. I'm trying to get minelab on the phone and they just keep ignoring me. They either have the best or worst service. For years there service sucked....then it was the best for a couple years....now they dont answer there phones or return your messages or even acknowledge that they even got your message. I'm looking at 4 machines 3 are broke and one is an antique that was very weak and anemic even when new !! All I want is my EQX fixed. Just got told that we are on hold till june 1st. We will not be allowed in the bahamas to recover our boat and treasure hunting equipment until then. I had the crappy little bounty hunter.....one small splash later and it was dead !! Now it's time to dive again and I have nothing. I'll have to go hunt with the BCC (bronze cannon corporation) boys and see what's going on with this TV show. We have (the three amigos) to dive. I'm not sure what the three amigos are but these magnetometer readings look promising !! I also have a half dozen spots in the lower keys to hunt but have no machine. I have done well eyeball searching my wrecker spot so it's either back there or out by kyak back to a bottle spot or 2. I'm starting to panic without any machines as the water warms up !! What a disaster this corona virus has been for my spring bahama hunts....I was just getting going with all that silver conglomerate over there. The lesson is dig as hard as you can when you can....you never know when you'll be able to get back and dig again. Bill I have to abandon some of the best sites in the bahamas and I'm not even sure when I'll get my equipment back.....I did have a bahamian friend recover my equipment and bring it back to his house for security purposes. This sucks...I'm dead in the water !!

Quite the kill pile of dead/dying detectors there Bart!
(You need a detector company sponsor. Then stock them by the gross...:laughing7:)

Finding out about some regiments, specifically certain soldiers, especially in the Western Theater, can sometimes be a crap shoot. What was his name? I could probably do my own searching to find out, and if I run into a dead end, I know exactly who to ask.

For Pennsylvania soldiers, its really easy to go to PACivilWar.com or something like that, and they have big lists of who fought with who, where and when. Ohio and other states are a bit harder to find, but not impossible to track down.

If you're really serious about finding out about your grandfather, I would suggest enlisting the services of Nancy Sylvia. She'll pull out a million little things about your Civil War ancestor, pull out ancestors you didn't know you had, and find info and stories on practically everyone else in your family. She's one of the best I know who does that sorta thing.

Uncle bill are 70’s loonies still used? Worth anything over face?
I can’t upload pics without getting logged out

jeff,

Still valid currency worth about 70 cents u.s. each.

Problem is you can't cash them in at a bank since banks only accept paper currency no coins for exchange.

Guess I’ll bury them on the next beach vacation then

Tomorrow starts Operation Lewis, I'll be gone for another two days.

MTC.

= Morning Tnet Crew.

:)
