That gargoyle is a decorative navigation lantern. The red glow depicts the starboard running light concealed in its mouth. Im guessing about that I'm 90% Sure that's it.

Red would be portside today. (I know you already knew..)
I was trying to make heads or tails (bows/sterns) of the crafts.
Big forecastle or something jamming me up. L.o.l..

Don't need them nearer the equator!

But did they use any green lights in that era?
Maybe too many renditions with artistic liberties combined with hollywood but I only see/have seen clear lights /lamps.

I'm working on getting rich.
Maybe get the ships crew over to Merry Olde England for a couple weeks detecting after I strike it big.

Feels I'm getting close.
