Just the right time to catch the fall colors Rusty Relics.

Beautiful fall color out in the marsh around here. It's a good thing too because the local ducks are thoroughly educated. Had a threesome of gadwall flare from my decoys as soon as I quacked, and it wasn't even one of them fancy hen mallard high-ball-bring-'em-in calls, just a chuckle and two quacks. Did not see but five ducks all morning.

I hope something freezes up north and brings down some fast action. Other than that it's all about the jet stream now.

Weather has been weird lately, so fall colors won't be spectacular. From what I hear, we (North of you) are going to get a cold snap that will last us through winter, so that should be good for flat beaked sky chickens.

Well! I'll have you know that gadwall, woodies, ringneck, and ruddy are staples around here! They are beautiful streamline birds, powerful in flight and delicious on the table! Around here we don't go disrespecting ducks calling them "flat-beaked Sky ..."

.....

Cripes! They do kinda look like chickens..... :icon_scratch:

Going hunting, with the tracfone that has no internet. I'll see y'all tonight after I watch Gremlins. See ya.

I'm not scaring fowl again this year...
But local geese were down. Or just so happy they did not move around a lot before heading out.
Spotted a few groups passing through not long after the locals bailed.

A large pond/small lake in the woods I go by regular I always look for waterfowl.
An off year there too.
Still expect to spot mallards and woodies on their way migrating.
Must be holding out for a major freezing or something.

Reports of acorns are good. That could be holding the woodies up.
A wet year and lots of puddles and ponds might be keeping mallards happy along with delayed crop harvests? But geese should still be in the crops ,I dunno...
Didn't notice anything on the bigger lake near here today either. Or the marsh ,or fields.
Good thing I ain't depending on a duck dinner.
Did hear shotguns Last Sunday around the farms. A trio of shots (migratory magazines plugged to only hold three rounds probably) followed by two quick ones.
Had heard some shots earlier from that direction but it didn't register...

Fresh from the murky depths .Just beyond the lake shore line in 6" water & 2" down. 006.webp009.webp014.webp

RC,

Well still loads of Canada Geese in the parks along the lake in my area. I have seen quite a few flocks heading south guess it depends on how far north they are migrating from.

Roger,

Good score looks possibly Mexican by the design type.

I'm not in any major flyway here. Bits and pieces of migrations so to speak.
But do note passers by when I'm out enough to notice the late departures.

Non local geese look on suspiciously. Strange turf syndrome I can imagine...
The other types are feeding or resting in areas of little popularity during the nesting period. And seldom are around more than a couple days.

Soon. Ice will start the birds chatting about winter destinations.
A heron with a briefcase displaying photo's of sunny climes ,ect. selling timeshares..:evil5:
