The Giving Tree: Seldom seen Half Dollar, SLQ, Cane Handle, Buckle, Round bal...

First hunt was a dud for 2016. Nada

So I hunted an island in the centre of a driveway of a 1680 house. The island had a 6' diameter stump and a whole lot of iron. So I gridded and removed the iron nails and crap. Down below and around it, this is what I found.

1893 Colombia Half dollar, designed by both Barber and Morgan. These were very popular coins but I never remember seeing one dug.

I saw that old stump and thought of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. So I sat there on the 250 year old tree stump for a few minutes and shared my old finds with the tree that seem 'em all go in the ground.

First time I've seen one if those halfs, killer find scrappy. Looks like it was dropped yesterday

Yea, gotta clear that iron and the goodies appear. Great Columbian and SlQ.

Thanks for taking a look guys. I really haven't been out since then- my "honey do" list is being enforced in the new year. Turns out that was one of my wife's New Years resolutions. Lol

That's a good point, but I'm not gonna polish that sucker like a shoe buckle;)

That does bring one other point though...how do you display a friggin cane anyway?!?! It's always a crapshoot in my opinion; Whether it's how you're going to clean a coin, bring the gilt out on a button, clean an old silver, a relic, etc...

Lol yup a big mistake and learning lesson. I have no problem with us trying to make what we dug as presentable and detailed as possible. Just not a huge fan of actually converting these items or adding to them. For instance I would personally never add the guts to a shoe buckle. That's the way it came out and that's the way I want to display it. But that baby is yours buddy and you do whatever your lil heart desires. It will look awesome either way bud

Awesome coin! First I've seen...congrats on a killer day, my best day was under a rotten tree stump and I know how good it feels to sit down for a moment and relish the experience. Thanks for the story.

That was my favorite book as a child, Great finds :icon_thumright:
