The Giving Tree: Seldom seen Half Dollar, SLQ, Cane Handle, Buckle, Round bal...

First hunt was a dud for 2016. Nada

So I hunted an island in the centre of a driveway of a 1680 house. The island had a 6' diameter stump and a whole lot of iron. So I gridded and removed the iron nails and crap. Down below and around it, this is what I found.

1893 Colombia Half dollar, designed by both Barber and Morgan. These were very popular coins but I never remember seeing one dug.

I saw that old stump and thought of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. So I sat there on the 250 year old tree stump for a few minutes and shared my old finds with the tree that seem 'em all go in the ground.

That half is really, really cool. Nice digs! Congrats

I never had heard of that coin either. Looks to be in excellent shape. The standing liberty is also in nice shape. Congrats!

Love that columbian coin, very nice SLQ and with a date....:occasion14:

Thanks fellas. It was nice to get a little silver and relics before these last few days of frigid temps

That is sweet brother! George has a tree named that too, I lost count how many LC's he pulled out from under that big oak!

Hey Brad! I didn't know that about George. It was a favorite book as a kid and I think of it whenever I'm around big old trees.

NICE FINDS SCRAP .....

Wow! The Columbia half-dollars really cool congratulations on that find! SLQ is in beautiful shape, and nice other finds. Way to go scrappy! Congrats and HH

Scraps I thought I commented on this....hmmmm I have a very bad memory. All those concussions. I really like that cane handle. The coins are great as well but that relic is killer

Thanks for taking a look DD.

It was a blast Wheat. Unfortunately I have to find my halves one by one, unlike YOU! Lol

Thx Abe. What would you do? Leave as-is or add a new handle?

Nice coin Steve,
I've never heard of it before. And I really like that cane handle.

Kyle-
Nor had I heard of the coin. I was afraid it was a commemorative coin manufactured much later but it turned out to be minted in 1893.

Thx buddy. I think our door is closing next week. I'm very unenthusiastic about that prospect! Lol

I think a new cane under the handle would a fitting display item, and useful down the road when you'z get old. Two thoughts one get one turned and fitted, or the other option is get a nice used pool cue and cut it down and fit the head on it. There's some really nice used cues out there and it's basically the same thing a tapered piece of turned wood.

That's a good idea. Instead of people saying "what's that" in the display, I can call them a dip **** if they ask with the handle attached;)

That said, a pool cue may be the ticket and judging from the diameter of the hole should fit rather well.

Thanks for the ideas buddy. Stay warm!!

I'm a big believer in leaving as is buddy. The only things I would likely have worked on or modified would be a rare relic like a box plate or rattlesnake button. Something to that effect that could be straightened by a professional. I just like things the way they leave the dirt. Just my opinion buddy

That's a good point, but I'm not gonna polish that sucker like a shoe buckle;)

That does bring one other point though...how do you display a friggin cane anyway?!?! It's always a crapshoot in my opinion; Whether it's how you're going to clean a coin, bring the gilt out on a button, clean an old silver, a relic, etc...
