The Giving Tree: Seldom seen Half Dollar, SLQ, Cane Handle, Buckle, Round bal...

First hunt was a dud for 2016. Nada

So I hunted an island in the centre of a driveway of a 1680 house. The island had a 6' diameter stump and a whole lot of iron. So I gridded and removed the iron nails and crap. Down below and around it, this is what I found.

1893 Colombia Half dollar, designed by both Barber and Morgan. These were very popular coins but I never remember seeing one dug.

I saw that old stump and thought of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. So I sat there on the 250 year old tree stump for a few minutes and shared my old finds with the tree that seem 'em all go in the ground.

That's a real nice commemorative coin... I wish you had taken a picture of the stump!

I always get a thrill when I dig a half. Well done on the Columbia. The full date 1925 SLQ is a rare find in the excellent condition that it is in.
Congrats on starting the new year with some outstanding finds.

Nice one Steve - love those US commemoratives. Never seen one dug either, but my Dad and I have one in our collection somewhere along with a few others.

Killer finds Scrappy! The half dollar and the cane handle are sweet. And... a dated SLQ. You gat all sorts of good stuff on that hunt. Congrats.

Awesome hunt Steve! That half dollar and cane top are sweet. I wonder if there was a bottom piece of brass to that cane, or if it was just wood. I'd be tempted to replace the wood and display it leaning in a corner. ha Great way to start 2016 man.

257 is freakin absurd!
I think it's safe to say that in your wake, NJ will have absolutely zero silver left the way you find it! Lol so you have 3 so far, I got 1, that's literally the closest I'll be all season because I'm sure you're about to blow me outta the water lol!!

Good luck, keep killing it

Lol. I never posted my 2015 totals actually. I'm a closet silver addict;) Funny enough, like you, I find it hunting older sites and happen across most in search of Colonial diggs.

Excellent coin Steve. I would love to see one of those Columbian Half Dollars in the bottom of a hole. ( or heck even in the plug !! ).
The coin had me fooled for about 2 seconds. I saw two globes...familiar?!ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1452003765.580722.jpg

I would have taken an in-situ for the above mentioned reason but I left my phone on my car. I fed would have taken a pic of the stump. But it's big enough to show up on google maps;)ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1452003912.868773.jpg

Thx. I thought the slq was a clad quarter since it came out black as night. Lol. I rubbed it a bit harshly at first lol

Wow, Scrappy that Columbian half is awesome and it was the first commemorative coin ever produced at the U.S. mint. That quarter is a great find also. You are still number one hunter in my book.

THx Bill. I'm glad to just get out still. Although the ground is probably froze about an inch or so down after the last 36 hrs of frigid temps.

Thx Tom. The cane handle l actually cleaned up rather well after a hour of scrubbing.

Adding wood to the handle is a great idea! Not sure how to display it though....

You really nailed this hunt down, great silvers, and a sweet relic to boot. Well done once again Scrappy.

The our little bay froze over last night woke up to -20C this morning for the second one in a row, but it's going up to 35F and rain this weekend so there's a slim hope for a hunt.

WTG! Congrats!
Nice recovery and good start to the year!

That is sweet brother! George has a tree named that too, I lost count how many LC's he pulled out from under that big oak!

Three French hens, two turtle doves...oh wait that holiday is over.

I guess there's not much else one could ask for in a hunt. Lol

That's rough with the weather but I hope the ground thaws just enough for you to get that shovel through one last time. One more before your big England trip! Thanks for looking Pepp

I never had heard of that coin either. Looks to be in excellent shape. The standing liberty is also in nice shape. Congrats!
