Also the main reason for Fort Huachuca, Az was to block the pathway to Mexico for the Apaches to use the Cave entrances/tunnels in the mountains behind the fort. The tunnels were the entrance of a system that from deep radar seemed to go to with in 700 miles of Mexico City. The Apaches would go into the tunnels and pop out in Mexico, raid and go back into the tunnels and come back North. If you didn't have the tunnels memorized you would get lost and die in there. The last time it was tried to map them was in 1964. After 6 weeks had passed and no contact with the group, the Army wrote off the party as they only had 3 weeks worth of supplies, and blew closed all the tunnel mouths that they knew of and could find. They did say that in the tunnels they found beams at some places.
