Went out yesterday late afternoon, (Yes in the rain) :o . Covered the XLT and went to work in a field that has produced many coins from 1800 to early 1900's. I always bypassed a swampy area in the lower end. Since I was already wet and had the high boots on, I decided to check the area. Glad I did, after finding a harmonica reed and some brass shot shell ends, I hit a solid + 90 Signal. Out of the mud came my first Trade Dollar.

Hi Folks, thanks for the nice replies. Thanks so much for the Banner ! One of the replies asked about the area of the find, plowed, grassy and depth. The area now is grass pasture. I'm sure in the early days it was plowed. There is an old mill on the property with a date stone of 1744. The area I hunt is probably 1/4 mile square. A creek runs through the lower portion and swamp or wetland is on each side of the creek. I would probably think that it always was swamp. The Trade Dollar was only down about 5-6" in the swampy area. Since I was finding old Shot shell brass, I figured maybe a hunting area at some point. I just want folks to know that I don't find things like that everytime I go out. I am not a wizard or such. Sometimes its weeks or months of just junk before I hit a nice relic. I do spend a lot of time searching wide open fields, my preference. Nice quiet hums in the headset until I get that nice deep solid target sound and a +80 and up reading. How that Trade Dollar got there, I have no idea. It is nice, I will never forget the hunt. The rim on the coin is beat up a bit. Am I going back to search the rest of the swamp ? You know the answer to that one. Thanks Again Folks, you are all great people.

Congrats on making the Banner but even more so on that Bue-tee-full Coin! There, my 2cents worth.

SHA'MOKIN' Smokedaddy!!! She's in awesome condition and a very rare find indeed!!! I was in a coin shop a couple months ago selling off some black common date beach silver and scrap bent and broken rings and while waiting I saw one of these coins.Although I had heard of them I had never actually seen one.I asked the owner what kind of coin it was and he said a trade dollar and then it sparked my memory. He then proceeded to show me one that he had bought and got screwed on because he had not weighed it.There was a real big difference in appearance, the real one was a blueish silver hew and the fake looked like nickel.Any way congrats on the stellar find and the banner, well deserved!!! Fantastic Find!!!! I also have one of those coins with the same "S" mint mark. It's nice to hold something in your hands that not many other people have held.

If I were you I'd go back, grid out the area and go over it nice and slow in the hopes you can find another one with a "CC" mint mark. ???

The one you found can be worth about $1,000+ in good condition.

A "CC" mark is worth about $14,000 in good condition. Now here's the kicker. One of these beauties sold at action for $143,000+. :o Here's the link to the story.

Once again, Congrats on a great find.

which I would say grades in Extra Fine Condition"

I totally agree with the pgcs values.

My thoughts on Herritage is that they're a well known auction company that is used by many high end dealers who are willing to pay more for higher quality and rarer coins. So yes, Herritage will give it a higher value.

WOWWWWW!!!!!! Gorgeous coin. WTG!!!
