Went out yesterday late afternoon, (Yes in the rain) :o . Covered the XLT and went to work in a field that has produced many coins from 1800 to early 1900's. I always bypassed a swampy area in the lower end. Since I was already wet and had the high boots on, I decided to check the area. Glad I did, after finding a harmonica reed and some brass shot shell ends, I hit a solid + 90 Signal. Out of the mud came my first Trade Dollar.

:o :o WOW!!!!! I'd like to know if anyone else has ever found a trade dollar? Short production run and designed for oriental trade, it can't be a common find. Congrats

It's great to see such a rare coin come up, and in such phenomenal shape!

I hope you're still having fun with this fantastic find.

A friend of mine found a similar coin in an old house wrapped in a piece of cloth. The year doesn't make sense ,so it's either a counterfeit or a mistake was made on the date. It has "cc" on the bottom and it is silver. Does anyone know what metal were the counterfeits made of?

MaineDigger is correct. Regretfully, the trade dollar is one of the most counterfeited US coins. Here are some links about them:

I recently purchased a small lot of junk silver at auction that had a few silver dollars in it, including a very nice condition 1875-CC trade dollar in it. I thought it was odd that this coin was in with a lot of junk, well worn dollars and quarters. I took it to a coin dealer who was an expert on counterfeit coins. Mine weighted 27.1 grams, which meant it was the proper silver content, but it was a counterfeit. I did some research and found the above links, so I believe the dealer was honest with me. Also, he did not offer to buy the coin. Two other dealers I showed it to assumed it was genuine, and offered to buy it for a fair price. I did not tell them I suspected it was counterfeit, but also, in good conscience, I did not sell it to either one. I'm glad I didn't pay much more than scrap silver prices for that lot.

One of the above articles mentions that many were counterfeited in the 1920s. I would suggest getting yours checked out by a coin dealer you can trust and has knowledge of counterfeit coins. You could also have it sent off to one of the coin grading services such as ANACS, PCGS, or NGC, but they charge a fee for examining and grading a coin.

Thanks for the links Trashdigger on the Counterfeit Trades. While I am no expert on Coin Grading or other, I used one of the links to check the Swamp Monster. From what I could see, mine appears authentic. I guess the only true way is to send it off to get checked. Thanks for the useful information.

I have not been on here for a while but when I did I saw this. Looks like it was lost earl on. EXCELLENT FIND!!!! GREAT SHAPE!

Man, that is beautiful, and judging from your avitar, you must have been jammin on the ole banjo after that! ;D

Wow, what an awesome find. Probably my favorite U.S. coin. Silver dollars are especially rare to find IMO. Given their size and value they were harder to loose.
