Spanish Galleons

bikerlawyer,
I had to post this here, because your mailbox is full...I'll await your final decision. Of course, your family is welcome, though I have no idea how to entertain the kids amongst a bunch of old goats like us! LOL

RelicDude,
The cookout is officially on for June 6th now. I hope this is O.K. for you. Maybe you and PcolaBoy can drive down together after all...
Aquanut

Aquanut - I commend you for your effort, it takes folks like you to bring secretive types (lol) like these treasure hunters together. Being on the left coast, I'll be unable to attend, but hope to read about it here.

Wish there were something I could do to help the effort.

Hope ya'll have a great event and may the treasure gods look favorably on all.

Be safe.

3 years ago, I was a "tire-kicker" at a simliar outing. Now I'm working in one of the largest and most interesting territories in the world. I wasn't a great researcher, I didn't know what a magnetometer was...and the extent of my underwater metal detecting experience was helping my uncle find his lost tackle box in a lake in Texas. My metal detector was a gift from a guy who I helped clean out his garage. I found TNET by searching for metal detecting tips, and now everything I know about shipwreck hunting I learned from people I met here.

Moral? Don't discount anyone before you give them a chance...no matter how inexperienced or un-dedicated they appear at first. The only things I brought to the table at our first outing were good intentions and a desire to learn. If you think you want to be involved, SHOW UP and see where it goes from there. It took me from a computer in a cubicle in Texas to diving for a living in the Dominican Republic. I highly recommend it. ;-)

Best of luck Aquanut, I'm rooting for you down here...make it happen!

I remember. I followed your experiences. You left your job in Texas, and somehow found Jupiter Beach, called Seahunter on his boat and said come pick me up Im here on your beach! Great story.

I dont know what I can offer but I am honored to be invited by such a great group of people. All I can do is ID widgets on the What Is It forum.

Hi All,
it sounds like it will be a good time for all, i just wish i could get in on the fun, but it's just too far of a commute for me to make :'(

now how about targets ???, now i realize that the title of the post is Spanish galleons, but just remember that all that glitters does not always have to be gold. as i'm sure there are some more recent wrecks, or other projects that could have some value as well. such as ...

colonial wrecks ( for the cannons and copper hull sheathing )

wrecks from the gold rush eras 1840's - 1890's ( the central america is just one example that comes to mind )

wrecks from the early 1900's there were many large ore carriers lost. (even coal has value in large quantities )

many WW2 + merchant supply ships were lost containing valuable supplies ( copper, brass, platinum, mercury, etc. )

you may also find some prospects in tramp steamers that were lost carrying rubies, emeralds and gold from south america

another option may be manganese nodules that form naturally on the ocean floor. ( from international waters, due to regs. )

these are just a few ideas that come to mind, but i also have read that the real money come's from the tales that are told and the stories that are spun, in the books and films that follow the adventure. providing a nice ongoing back end financial return. and regardless of the qualities or quantities of the finds, just remember that tales of tragedy or defeat also seem to sell just as well. ( film and document it all from start to finish if at all possible )

but personally i feel that the true treasure would be in the memories of the fun and adventure of the search and recovery and the friendships made. remember... "treasure is where you find it " ::)

i wish you all the best of luck, and keep us informed, and most of all... HAVE FUN !!!
;D

Thanks lobsterman,
Of course you're right. My being in the advertising business most of my life and looking for that attention getting headline made me settle on "Spanish Galleons". Now of all the ships I'd like to find, a ship carrying Aztec and Mayan treasure from Cortez would be the one! However, I'll settle for a "Central America"!

My 2 cents. Take the trip to meet people interested in doing like things. It may open doors you never dreamed were possible. It has for me.

Try and put aside the petty stuff, and wait until you actually meet people face to face and spend some time getting to know them before you pass judgment. Internet forums and emails are great for getting people connected, but they can be a hard place to actually gage people. Keep an open mind, you never know how something is going to play out until you actually get involved.

I too packed up one weekend years ago and drove solo 700+ miles to hang out with a group of random people off the internet I'd never met. I've since made some lifelong friends, some of which I am closer to than family. It has opened more doors for me than I ever dreamed would present themselves, and continues to do so today.

There always seems to be ego and other self-imposed barriers between a lot of people in this field. As soon as you figure out you don't have all the answers and that some of these other people might, everyone will be ahead of the game. I don't care who you are, where you been, or how many books you've read, written, or other - there is always someone out there that has more knowledge or experience. Take advantage of it, pool your talents, tools, leadership skills, and set your sights on a goal and achieve it. It really is that simple.

Aquanut - Great idea, I'm sure everyone will have a blast. I would love to be there just to meet some new faces and see some old friends. At the moment it isn't looking good for me to come down but you never know..... Let me know if I can ever be of any help.

Aquanut,
Let me know where you will be holding this shin"dig" and what I can bring as way of food. I'll bring my own vino! ;D

ScubaDude,
You are saying exactly what I've been trying to say, but better! I appreciate the offer of help and we'll wait to see what develops.

DiverLynn,
The address is 4319 Tony St. Orlando, FL 32808. Google the map. If you take the turnpike up all the way to 429 you will miss the I-4 traffic of Orlando. If you come up 95 you'll want to get on 50 to the 408 (East-West Highway) and get off at John Young Parkway. Let me know if this is confusing and I'll get you a map for your specific use. My cell phone number is 386-801-9242.
Aquanut, (A.K.A. John).

Auqanut, I would have certainly liked to be there just to meet everyone, but not sure I will be able to make it. I hope you guys are successful.

There has been a lot of good info in this post and I have to agree with what Darren, Jason and Brad have said. Too many Chiefs can cause problems!

I don't usually pass up a good meal either.

Best of luck,

Robert

looking good for the 6th for me. ;D where theres a will theres a way.

Robert,
You're going to miss a few of your friends here, if my PM's are still up to date.

Ivan, I'm really glad that things worked out!

Aquanut

I'll be coming along with my wife on the 6th. I'm very thankfull to have the chance to get down there on this rescheduled date! (uh.... let's keep my previous joking remarks about 'gentlmens clubs' a bit on the quiet side  )

What's a "Gentleman's Club"? Is that where old rich guys sit around smoking cigars and drink single malt scotch while they lie about their golf score?
Aquanut

:icon_pirat: Aquanut, I tried to send you an email but it was returned. I was wanting to know if you still have room for two more at your cookout. I live in North Fort Myers on a 57 foot boat. Email me with your correct email address and I'll forward the email I wrote. I included a few pictures of us and our boat rather than post them here. However, if you would rather I can rewrite the email and post it here with some of the pictures.
Thanks,
Russ "White Feather"

Don't know if you got my pm, but, I plan on being there, and Randy Andrews is coming along too. Maybe also Travis Tinney. I won't muscle in on you without throwing something in the food/beverage pile. What would you like? Beer, meat, drinks, ice, cigars ?? Let me know. Don't be shy. You can reach me through my web mail at www.pixlbndr.com, www.signumops.com, or, I think you have my email address.

How about a pc/projector/screen combo? Will you have something like that? I can bring em' if you want me to.

I am going to try to make it as well. Including my girlfriend, that is 2 more probables. I'll bring a Key Lime pie.
