While it's true that it could be argued that France was in control of both empires (which is why the Allies protested), Philippe (Louis' grandson) was on the throne for the duration of the war & remained on the throne afterward, so there was no switch made from 1701 forward. In 1714, nothing changed except that Philippe lost all hope of gaining back Flanders & other small Spanish interests during his reign. The entire war was fought in vain & it was one of the bloodiest ever at that point.

This is a minor point, but I disagree that Hamilton "definitely" had a stake in any and/or all the ships that went to/ near " the Spanish camps" as Valle put it. From everything I have read, practically every merchant vessel going up the Bahama Channel was dropping by the Spanish wreck sites and snooping about.

True. Everyone wanted a piece of the wrecks. My reference to "those ships" was only those in Jennings' fleet. Hamilton did invest in Barsheba, Mary & Eagle + a few others I think (going on memory here).

Ya, it's probably a ballast stone.

I've been told it is ballast stone and could have Silver or Gold impregnated. Gentleman said they did this to hide some of the value of the load they were carrying...
