Damn! You said you didn't have any Spanish. (or is it just a cob you're waiting for?) That 8 reale with the George bust counterstamp certainly counts. I'd be very happy with that. Is the detail good on the other side?

Also, the George III Farthing in the 2nd pic, is there much to see on the other side? I like those misc. silver too.
I thought that as well :icon_scratch:

yeah, both as good on the other sides. The 8 is a fake.

I know it is, but contemporary isn't it? I think that's a great find.

PS... A couple years back I got a steal on one of those. (a real one that is) The Seller listed it under Mexico thinking it was the proper place to put an 8 reale, and of course it is if there's no stamp. Anyway I couldn't believe I won it for $85. Two weeks later I sold it for $425.

yeah contemporary. I wouldn't mind a real one for the collection but they are pretty expensive with the countermark.. Did you know the saying at the time: "The head of a Mad man on the neck of a fool"

No, never heard of it but sounds about right. :D I've liked those 8 reales for quite a while. Another good score I made at the time was an 18th century Calander medal in a very nice grade. I did well off it too. Have you ever found one, or know of someone who dug one? There has to be some in the ground.

Your making me sick thinking about it again. I found a Calander Medal (many years ago when I was quite young & green), I remember it well. Halfway up a hill on a footpath on the edge of a ploughed field. I hit it with the spade & took off a small chip from the edge. Still got it as a reminder to dig more carefully. One I remember well, as at the time it was close to my best find ever!

Well you're lucky to have made very good finds since, so the old days like that shouldn't haunt you too much. Just the last two years has given you enough to quit any time and be happy!

Found this one in a ballpark, former site of a traveling circus. The reverse is blank.

This is still a neat find even though it's fake. It was found in our best field
in 10 years of hunting. I always told Weaver this field had a bust half in it.

Not including the few Roman ones I have, plus I gave my collection of counterstamped coins away to a collector about 3 years ago.
I also know I have had many counterfeit halfpennies & Shillings but never kept them.

As much as it REALLY hurts me to say this..where is the CARTWHEEL you found with the stamp on it? :laughing7:

Funny thing is, when he finally gets one, he will be Cartwheeling across the fields, ending in a double backflip..... I will run over thinking has got a Hoard of Celtic Gold Coins.....and he will proudly show me his Cartwheel Penny (maybe if he is lucky he will start with a Twopence & have a heart-attack)

Post em. Many George II counterfeits tend to be cast, and if they're not, a lot of the time they are pretty obvious. George III on the other hand are rarely cast and a lot of the ctfts are very close to the regal issues. (The weight and diameter is a good starting point) They are so close, and common, very few people care one way or the other. To them It's just a George III Halfpenny and sales reflect very little difference. (dug coppers) High grade non dug you would probaby see a bit more for the counterfeit.

The georges...Not in great shape but they are old.

The only thing I can tell you for that group is they are all either Regal/genuine issues, or counterfeits that are close enough they really wouldn't spark any interest to those who collect them. Using the weight, diameter, and close comparisons might tell you the story, but there is really no point in doing so. They are just as good a find either way.

My one and only counterfeit find. Found last year on one of the best sites I've ever hunted.
8 reales

They ain't pretty but they sure are counterfeits

Have quite a few counterfeits but these two are special, Rotted Pewter!

The rotted pewter 1814 Capped Bust Half was found as I was done hunting a homestead and I was walking back to the truck but still swinging while I walked back and at a sandy turn in the road this disc of lead/pewter popped out. I thought it was just a hunk of junk and when i got back to my truck, I took the object out and looked at it again, and now that the moisture was drying out some the details appeared and even a date! But, it was short lived, by the time I got home to preserve the Half the date area and some more of the edge material fell off. :( So, glad I did see a date before that happened, it is sprayed with clear lacquer.1814BustHalf.jpg

Two years ago my son took me to a new site he found, and at this site he got a 1650s French Liard and I believe a Half Real on his first hunt. He guaranteed me I would break a dry spell I was having in finding some oldies and he was correct. Right away I got this coin and knew right away it was a pewter counterfeit and this one was bad, but could at least see that it was a KGII before it got a tad worst.......
The C4 guys tell me,not many KGII pewter counterfeits exist, shame this one was so disintegrated........pewterKG.jpg
