Some of you may remember the early 1900's "A. Jacobs & Sons" POLICE button I dug up at the plantation house about a week ago. In my years on detecting this is my favorite button EVER, and one I was hoping to keep to pass on to my kids.
Well, it's not to be.
Last week I did some checking around and found out that the company is still in business, and has been around since the late 1800's. I e-mailed them last week and sent pictures of the button I had found thinking they would be happy to hear the story and see the button. Today I received a reply from Josh, one of the descendants of the company. Here's his reply:

Dear Mr. Snyder,
My uncle, Robert Friedlander, just forwarded me the email you sent him. Congrats on your recent find. You have found a special piece of our family's history. I have just printed the image you sent and have mailed the copy to my grandfather. He has just turned 86, I am sure your picture will bring back many memories.
Would you be willing to trade for your buttons. I would love to give something like those to my son one day. As you can believe we have many new and old brass police and military buttons as well as patches and other accouterments.
Again, congrats on you find.
Respectfully,
Josh Hyatt F & F and A. Jacobs and Sons, Inc.

Here is their company history:
http://www.rjuniform.com/history.htm

Well, being the softy that I am, I offered it to Josh with one exception. He is going to take a picture of him and his son with the button in front of their company, and e-mail it to me. I'll post it when I get it from him.
He offered me some other items from his company which I didn't ask for. I guess he's just happy to be getting this nice little piece of family history.
Rather than just send it back, I decided to do it in style. I made a nice display for him with the buttons background, the companies history, a picture of where and when it was recovered, and a blowup picture of the front and back of the button.
I will truly miss this button, as it was by far my favorite one, but I felt it would mean more to them.
Hopefully this will bring some good karma. ;D

You are a Class Act. Somebody should forward this to the local paper and see if they would be interested in doing a article on it. Shows that we're not all "Vandals" looting history for our own personal gain as some would have you believe. Here's hoping there is a Confederate States Buckle in your near future!!

DF,
That is an awesome idea. I may try to send it in to the town paper where their company is now, and also our local paper here in NC where I found the button. Any good press for us can't hurt.
Thanks for the idea.

Very cool Doug. You do such a great job with those cases/displays.

I have given nice stuff back to the owners(Barber's, IH's, etc). And although I wish I had some of that stuff it makes me happier thinking that they have the stuff and are showing people what someone with a metal detector found on their property.

WOW! That was really a nice thing for you to do. . . and the display case, beyond the call of duty :) I wouldn't be surprised if this gesture opens a few places to hunt.

Well done!

Doug,

That is a beautiful display you created on that button. ::) You're a very generous person, my friend. You are giving our hobby good PR. Wish everyone could read your story, especially all the one's that keep calling the cops on us.....they just don't get it!

Maybe there's another one of those buttons in that backyard just waiting to be found.

Good job!!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

This post brought tears to my eyes. ( You Softy)

Try NBC17 they filmed my brother after he found an old out of place headstone.

Hope you keep that old and new detector swinging for all of us.

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Congratulations on your unselfish act of generosity. You have given the hobby a good name as well as earned some points in the karma department. Maybe it will get a little publicity, so more people could see how important this hobby is to the recovery of lost historical artifacts. Hope there are some buried silver dollars in your future. Ahhh what the heck I hope there are some silver dollars in all our futures thanks to you.

Aww... MM, you are just an ol' softy for sure.

You made a beautiful display for that button, and I can't imagine how tickled they're going to be when they get it.

What a neat, neat story! I'm so glad you shared it!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Greetings MM, and everyone on this forum.

Before I submit my comments to MM, I wanted to share a little background in why I felt compelled to join this forum and leave this post. I'm from Baltimore Maryland and do not live terribly far from the A. Jacobs & Son's business. After seeing that name on the back of the police button, I just had to research this as well. I recently retired in December of 2007, and was always interested in MDng but never had the time. I have been reading many posts on this forum and I'm so impressed with how active, friendly and informative everyone was that it was a no brain-er for me to get involved with this hobby. I just ordered a GARRET ACE 250 from Kellyco and hope to start learning all I can about this wonderful hobby. I realize that Maryland is not a very MDnd friendly state, but I have written a few letters to Maryland park officials that has gotten some pretty positive responses. I'll post the responses when they are received.

In any case, after seeing what was done here by MM, it truly convinced me that I was getting involved in the right activity. Such a wonderful, wonderful gesture made by MM that without a doubt speaks volumes for MDng and doing the right thing.

Kudos to you MM!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Thank you Bill and welcome to TN. You've come to the right place. Very friendly folks here, and they know about everything there is to know about anything. (except how to pick lottery numbers that is ;D )
Congrats on your Ace250 & I'm looking forward to seeing your future posts.

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Hello MM!!

Thanks so much for your comments. Coming from you means a lot to me in getting into this activity.

Yes, I will keep the information flowing regarding any finds I make and will be sure to keep everyone informed to the extent possible on my progress with city and county officials in letting MDs hunt various areas in Maryland I've done research in. I live in Perry Hall Maryland which has a rich history of early settlements, Civil War sites and Indian migrations through this region.

Again Thanks MM!
