Some of you may remember the early 1900's "A. Jacobs & Sons" POLICE button I dug up at the plantation house about a week ago. In my years on detecting this is my favorite button EVER, and one I was hoping to keep to pass on to my kids.
Well, it's not to be.
Last week I did some checking around and found out that the company is still in business, and has been around since the late 1800's. I e-mailed them last week and sent pictures of the button I had found thinking they would be happy to hear the story and see the button. Today I received a reply from Josh, one of the descendants of the company. Here's his reply:

Dear Mr. Snyder,
My uncle, Robert Friedlander, just forwarded me the email you sent him. Congrats on your recent find. You have found a special piece of our family's history. I have just printed the image you sent and have mailed the copy to my grandfather. He has just turned 86, I am sure your picture will bring back many memories.
Would you be willing to trade for your buttons. I would love to give something like those to my son one day. As you can believe we have many new and old brass police and military buttons as well as patches and other accouterments.
Again, congrats on you find.
Respectfully,
Josh Hyatt F & F and A. Jacobs and Sons, Inc.

Here is their company history:
http://www.rjuniform.com/history.htm

Well, being the softy that I am, I offered it to Josh with one exception. He is going to take a picture of him and his son with the button in front of their company, and e-mail it to me. I'll post it when I get it from him.
He offered me some other items from his company which I didn't ask for. I guess he's just happy to be getting this nice little piece of family history.
Rather than just send it back, I decided to do it in style. I made a nice display for him with the buttons background, the companies history, a picture of where and when it was recovered, and a blowup picture of the front and back of the button.
I will truly miss this button, as it was by far my favorite one, but I felt it would mean more to them.
Hopefully this will bring some good karma. ;D

Doug,

You can never put a price on sentimental value because it is priceless. Outstanding gesture on your part by giving the button to the family and you surly went above and beyond the call of duty by creating such a nice display.

Triple KUDOS to you.

The button is in very good condition and unusual. I can see why it was your favorite. The pain you feel from parting with it will be replaced by the joy you brought to this family.

Seeing the Smile on the 2 of their faces made everything you did worth while. This now should be viewed as a Honorable Mention...And be put in the Newspaper.

Does the Home Owner of the Plantation know what you did? Maybe you frame the picture and give her a copy. WTG Doug

Wyatt,
I actually kept this button find to myself when I found it. I really wanted to keep it for myself, so I didn't show the property owner this one. Since then I've learned that they really don't want any of the finds except GOLD maybe  ) , so I e-mail them pictures of my finds and am making them a shadowbox of relics to keep for their house.

Doug,
I hope this gets in honorable mention! You deserve it. You have a big heart and lots of patience.

TNers,
I watched the process of this act from the beginning when the button was found, all the way til the morning when Doug shared the pictures of the grandson and great grandson with the MinerCult members. :)
I saw the display before he sent it. The pictures do not do justice at all. It was beautiful!!
Doug took a lot of time and effort to track the company down, emails back and forth, long distance phone calls, more emails, the decision to send the button, lovingly and proudly building the display, bringing it into work to share with his friends, and then sending it. Then more emails, etc. to follow up.
Trust me, Doug really went above and beyond to help share this family's history.
He proves there are decent people in this world that truely care.
I can tell you that the button was his absolute favorite, and I commend him for giving it back in such style !
BRAVO Doug!! Good Karma coming at you big time.
You made me proud!!!

Thanks Deb. You're too kind. Don't tell them I cried like a baby when I let it go. :o Just kidding, I got some dust in my eyes.

Doug,
Ya know that you will now find that special gold piece, that special silver piece, and another special button.
Mark it on your calender....cause you know I am right. :)

:icon_sunny: It is only for little things and stories like this and people like you that let me know there are still

a Few good people still in this world. Maybe if more people would instill this quality in the children they are

supposed to be "raising" then maybe just maybe there could be some hope for the future of the United States

of America!!! Maybe even the world!! Who knows? Only God . I'm proud to say that someone as

good as you are of a person I can say enjoys the same hobby/lifestyle as I do. Way To Go!!!!! HH!!

MM: This continues to be a fantastic story. You must have a BIG heart and a generous spirit to share your find. And you took the time and effort to make a proper and beautiful display for it. Honorable Mention for sure! :hello2: :hello2: :hello2:

From start to finish, this is just a perfectly wonderful story.

I love the pictures the dad sent you; that baby is adorable anyway, but clutching that bit of his family's history just puts the icing on the cake. I'm really looking forward to the 4 generation picture the dad promised.

MM, you can blink that dust out of your eye and give a happy sigh. Ya did good. Really, really good.

:notworthy:

Doug,

You have a heart of gold. I followed this story and it is really touching. I can't wait to see the 4 generation pic too. WTG, Doug...I'm proud of you!!
