Some of you may remember the early 1900's "A. Jacobs & Sons" POLICE button I dug up at the plantation house about a week ago. In my years on detecting this is my favorite button EVER, and one I was hoping to keep to pass on to my kids.
Well, it's not to be.
Last week I did some checking around and found out that the company is still in business, and has been around since the late 1800's. I e-mailed them last week and sent pictures of the button I had found thinking they would be happy to hear the story and see the button. Today I received a reply from Josh, one of the descendants of the company. Here's his reply:

Dear Mr. Snyder,
My uncle, Robert Friedlander, just forwarded me the email you sent him. Congrats on your recent find. You have found a special piece of our family's history. I have just printed the image you sent and have mailed the copy to my grandfather. He has just turned 86, I am sure your picture will bring back many memories.
Would you be willing to trade for your buttons. I would love to give something like those to my son one day. As you can believe we have many new and old brass police and military buttons as well as patches and other accouterments.
Again, congrats on you find.
Respectfully,
Josh Hyatt F & F and A. Jacobs and Sons, Inc.

Here is their company history:
http://www.rjuniform.com/history.htm

Well, being the softy that I am, I offered it to Josh with one exception. He is going to take a picture of him and his son with the button in front of their company, and e-mail it to me. I'll post it when I get it from him.
He offered me some other items from his company which I didn't ask for. I guess he's just happy to be getting this nice little piece of family history.
Rather than just send it back, I decided to do it in style. I made a nice display for him with the buttons background, the companies history, a picture of where and when it was recovered, and a blowup picture of the front and back of the button.
I will truly miss this button, as it was by far my favorite one, but I felt it would mean more to them.
Hopefully this will bring some good karma. ;D

What a nice story!

And do you mind if i use this in my report on metal detecting? It would be great to help prove that metal detectorists are great people!

No problem. Just don't put the picture of me in drag from last December. I think we lost half our members from that frightning experience. :o ;D
We ARE a great group of folks. That's for sure.

Thanks.

Ouch! I had nightmares after seeing that pic :D You deserved more than a ring for that one ::)

You are a class act (pic post aside...) and a credit to this hobby. Outstanding job on that display by the way! Awesome!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

ALL RIGHT DOUG !

Congrats on the find and what you have done..it shows all of us that being able to do these kinds of things for people is an even greater gift than the find itself..I am privaleged to be associated with people like you who care enough to bring families and lost pieces of their history together after so many years. The display is very nice as well - it brings everything into perspective and makes its story more complete and meaningful..it is a treasure in itself.

Nice job,
Nat

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Good job. You did the right thing. You just gave all the md'ers a good name with your good deed. I think the initial story and the ending will make that button more special than just finding it and keeping it in a box somewhere.

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Honorable Mention for SURE! It always makes me so happy to hear of lost items returned... Well, I have a hunch that this will be just as special--perhaps even more so.

Well done, Doug. And you're right about Karma. You always receive more than you give.

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Here's my vote for "honorable mention" as well.

Doug, you did an awesome job on the display. That has a real appeal to it...it just begs atention. I bet they'll be thrilled to hang that on their wall. The button was already interesting, but not like it is now!

You're a great guy, and what goes around comes around.

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Hey MM, I was talking about this very thing yesterday. About how the value of doing the right thing by getting a find back to an owner or relative is one of the best things we can do in this hobby we love. Before this all happened, that button was pretty special to you, as it would be for any of us. But now you have completed a cycle for your find. It has been elevated to a new level of importance. A new story has been written for your button. It is creating discussion and interest here on Tnet. It is making us think about all the positive aspects of our hobby. Some of us are probably going back and checking all our buttons and many other finds as well. I know I did!

MM.....I thank you for the extra effort you took! The best thing about it is that it is still always going to be the button that you found.

That said......When I saw the pic of your button, I said to myself..."Boy, that looks familiar" I started going through my stuff and finally located the one I found about 7 yrs. ago. I was surprised to see that it was a match. The difference is that on the back of mine it says....."Cumner Jones & Co Boston" I checked on a backmark website and it stated that Cumner Jones operated from about 1890-1950. So that is really cool!

Thanks again!.............Good luck & HH!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

You are a Class Act. Somebody should forward this to the local paper and see if they would be interested in doing a article on it. Shows that we're not all "Vandals" looting history for our own personal gain as some would have you believe. Here's hoping there is a Confederate States Buckle in your near future!!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

You are Awesome! What you did is a really great thing. I truly hope that you find something that will reward that great dead you just did. I truly love the way you set up the presentation for the button too! Congratz on finding that button and Congratz for being such a Great Person.... ;D

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

I want to thank you all for the wonderful replies. You're a great group of folks, a real family, and I'm as proud of you as you are of me.
My kids wonder why I metal detect and then give some of my stuff away. Hopefully they will learn something good from this too. ;)
I can always find another button. Maybe not that button, but it is well worth the joy it will give that family.

MEinWV,
Thank you for the kind words. You button sure looks like a match. That is so cool. Same era, different company. Very interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing that info with us.
