New Jersey Woman Arrested for Reciting Constitution at Tax Meeting

Bum luck, I see from your profile you are a "land surveyor" do you actually survey land or is this a way to say tax assessor? I am not trying to be funny here, just trying to understand where you are coming from...

The original poster is from Massachusetts , I also see post from other states! This is about NJ.
Why the interest? Believe me though, NJ needs all the help we can get....thanks!

Really about New Jersey? LOL!!!! No, this is about a cancer that is spreading through this country. Taxes are all about wealth transfer. The class warfare going on in this country is sickening to say the least...Why on earth does anyone allow a tax assessor into their home????????????
Taxes in Maine are just as out of control as they are in New Jersey, Mass, or just about any other state. The interest in this is because this kind of approach on taxes by all govt entities is effecting all of us.

you only have one choice really (since not paying taxes on land / property you own will sooner or later cause it to be sold for"back taxes owed-count on it)--- you can allow the ass in your home or they will "blindly" tax you on what they "think" you got and they will be very generous in their "thinking" to be sure they do not "undervalue" your home.

Bum luck , you think taxing you on everything including floor tile vs carpet is fair and just? Do you think its right that people have to sell their homes because they can't afford the taxes anymore?

I can't speak for Maine but in NJ they do not base your taxes on "carpet vs tile". Nor is it based on granite countertops or nice landscaping for that matter. Your house is assessed based on usable space such as a finished basement vs unfinished. If you don't allow them into your home, they will assume you have a finished basement, even if you don't and then you will have to file an appeal.

Jerseyben, what you forgot to mention is an in ground swimming pool, decks, or patios also add value and they're not even attached to the house :laughing7: Yes, they all add value and you will be assessed as such :tongue3:

Here in maine the particular town your property is located in determins what they tax you on. But they havent tried to enter my home to"have a look around"...

In Virginia, they just go by the outside (why SOME ppl don't paint their homes) & value of the land; NEVER go inside...

Yup, they have NO BUSINESS INSIDE!!!

Now, in An Affluent Neighborhood in central Virginia I know that the assessor wanted to go into a few homes to find out about finished basements and bonus rooms. Jersey is absolutely correct on that. I still would not let them in.

But this is the natural progression of government unless aline is drawn,, And we hold them to it!

Some Municipalities want to tax small farms , make them buy special event licenses for birthday parties, selling produce and then find every way possible to rob you if they can. I like buying vegetables from roadside stands, it's better, and it benefits me and the farmer.
