I am so happy tonight as I got permission to hunt a home built in 1836. The guy is trying to sell it and is in Florida. No one lives there.Within 1 hour I had three Indians and a 1919 Wheatie. The Indians were all at 4-5 inches. The 1866 looks brand new and it's the oldest of the three. No silver, yet. What was the production dates for the Indian pennies??

UPDATE FRIDAY JULY 4TH 10PM EST. Just got back in from another hunt. 5 clad pennies, 1 1976 dime, a 1944 merc, and some kind of copper badge with an animal in a trap. Don't know what it is. Also found a ring. Has some inscription on the inside but can't read it. I broke it with the shovel diging it out at 6 inches. The merc was at 4 inches. I'll try again tomorow

UPDATED SUNDAY NIGHT AT 11 PM EST First of all Got permission from the owners daughter today to hunt, not the realtor . I got in a few hours to hunt but have a lot more ground to cover. Need help identifying the button and the chinese coin??. A few cherry wheaties and a few memorials. Back Monday afternoon to do some more. PS PICTURE is from 1907. My Grandmother (95) let me borrow this book on the rich history of this small town. Lots of pics and more good ideas of places to hunt.

Wow! Awesome digs! WTG! You've found a nice sweet plot of virgin soil. Congrats!

Love the 66 , and the rest are sweet too. That animal badges is interesting looking. The lion/tiger ??? looks to be in a leg trap. Let us know what you find out.

Hope you get back out there soon. All that waiting would drive me nuts.

Doubt it has been hunted before with finds like that! Plus being private property makes it a bit less accessible to the casual detectorist.

Best of luck and let us know.

Do you have a better photo of the animal pin , front and back ? I would guess it to be a lion from the shape of the tail and it also appears to have it's rear leg in a trap . Is it a button ? It could be a better find than the Indians even though they are very nice .

I'll see what I can do.It's hard to get a picture much better. I'll try and re-post it later. Why do you think it may be worth more than the pennies??

Buttons are rare also and there are people collecting them . If it proves to be rare and collectable it could be a more interesting find than the Indian cents . Only a few animals have a tassel at the end of their tail so I think a lion is a good guess and this lion has it's rear paw in a pan trap . I myself find that more intriguing than the Indians which are common enough to looked up in a book . Just my humble opinion . If you get photo's front and back I would dabble in a little research myself on your behalf .

Very nice finds and great pics. I would guess it's a wolf in a trap. What type off metal is it made of? congrats.

1859-1909. 1866 there were 9,826,500 made. In the shape yours is in it could be worth 150-200 dollars maybe more hard to tell from picture.

Re: UPDATED JULY ,6 10:50 PM EST NEED HELP ON BUTTON ID AND COIN

Thanks for the info capndan

the coin is a chinese "cash" coin most typically are not worth all that much but often the quite old --the button is a general service type "eagle" button often given to infantry troops --thinking it is of civil war era or around that time frame -- the button is indded collectible and is in good shape --the 1866 indain is a knock out never seen one come out the ground in such great shape you are indeed lucky --the others are also great --hit that spot as often and as long as you can ---good luck ---Ivan

I did a little looking around on the net and found that there is a Fable that dates back to Roman times having to do with a lion in a trap and a mouse . This button or whatever it is could depict that lion . And by the way a wolf's tail is bushy from the base to the tip . Lions have smooth tail with a tuft on the tip .
