Mystery Mauling.....

I live in west Davidson county, on the greenway that connects radnor lake to the cumberland river, and we have LOTS of coyotes here, some the size of german shepherds.

I don't know about bears, but my dad has seen big cats (cougars) out by their place on the TN river/KY lake area outisde Erin.

Hope the dog gets better...

Might be interesting to put some trail cameras out where you think it happened.

normalizer.... I know where it happened... 30 yds. from my home. Right on the edge of the woodline. And if I put out some trail cameras I'll get mostly LOTS of photos of my dogs.

roaddust.... Yea, you need to be visual. The odds are on your side you will NOT be attacked but.... it's possible. Heck I went out for a early morning walk years ago here and came across a raccoon just sitting in the logging road. I just knew it would run off when I got close.... WRONG!!!! Something must have been wrong with the coon for it was not running off and it was pissed when I got about 30 ft. from it. They can make some vicious sounds. And yes I turned around and left (walking backwards for a ways). And some of the coyotes I've seen here are BIG.

If you own dogs please keep them fenced not chained up. The neighbors killed two porch dogs that were packed up and running deer on his mountain ridge. Loose dogs on other peoples property have a good chance of not returning .

I never thought this thread would still be alive . I posted here three weeks ago. But reading it has got me thinking. Also since I first saw this thread I saw a very large coyote in a spot where I was going to civil war relic hunt. My question is this ...if you were down on your knees digging a target , would a coyote deem you as being small and attack you while you were digging a hole ? Or is their natural fear strong enough to stay away ?

I imagine their nose would tell them you are human. Just don't spray yourself with doe urine before going out.

did you know that the eagles wanted to call one song ' motel missouri?' I changed that.
TreasureNet is a bit like the Hotel California...you can check out any time you want....but you can never leave :laughing7:

Jeff, are you doing something different with your hair?

LOL yep, I call it the sultry look. Like it?

Well hanging off this cross bar all day and night I tend to see and learn a little bit about wildlife. First thing, it's not that they are invading our areas, it's the other way around. For the most part many of these critters were here and there long before we came along. We've moved in to their hood. Now we have to deal with the neighbors so to say. And sometimes the neighbors aren't so friendly, and don't take kindly to us on their turf. Also in some cases we get to deal with the not so nice neighbors who got moved here because one of us moved in and took over their spot somewhere else.

Sometimes it can get ugly. We're seeing things like this more and more as people move into previously unpopulated areas, new developments go in where once was nothing but woodlands. I have homes in PA and FL, and I've read and seen things like this happen. A park gets built smack dab in the middle of the woods, and folks can't understand why there are deer on the pretty grass areas... Or they build a golf course with water traps out in a swamp and wonder why there are gators in the water... Creatures will adapt or move on when something changes. It just so happens we can get in their way, or visa versa.

Oh sure you sometimes have some renegades, and well they need to pay the price. I can understand that, if it's me or them, I plan on being the last one standing.

You do need to protect yourself if you venture into their land, they carry their weapons 24/7. And they know how to use them, as for them their weapons are how they survive.

Hmm reminds me of those neighbors, I think we called em Indians. Same scenario. They were here first, we moved in and couldn't get along with them. And what did we do?

Don't get me wrong, I've had to deal with some nasty neighbors, some who's turf I moved onto, and some who got pushed into my turf. For the most part it's live and let live, but a few didn't care to abide by that. The wild ones at least for me weren't as bad as the so called domestic ones. I get folks dropping off dogs. A lot of them, and since I don't frequent the area a lot, they tend to form packs. And unlike wild animals they have no fear what so ever of humans.
And that's not a good thing when something is not afraid of you and has started to revert to it's origins, and is hungry.
I've come close to loosing my stuffing on a couple of occasions with them.

"First of all, coyotes are not indigenous to East Tennessee. In fact, they were never found anywhere east of the Mississippi River as recently as 30 years ago. We should not think of them as you would think of a fox or wild turkey, which lived here long before humans inhabited East Tennessee. Davy Crockett never saw a coyote in Tennessee."

Humm? If a coyote can swim the Mississippi River.. could a Jaguar?

"Unlike many other cats, jaguars do not avoid water; in fact, they are quite good swimmers".

How about a cougar?

Ya I hear you on that! Hubby was sitting on the back patio just opened a beer when a big raccoon came charging at him, he did the only thing he could, shared the beer with the coon. Nailed it right between the eyes with a full can of beer! It staggered for a few seconds decided he didn't like that brand of beer turned and high tailed it out of there! Good thing it was hubby, my aim isn't as good!

Great story Msbeepbeep..... When I was about 11-12 years old I went coon hunting for 1st time with my Grandfather, 2 of his dogs along with his .22 mag. in Missouri. It was dark and the dogs were chasing a coon. The dogs weren't to far ahead of us and I keep up with them better than my Grandfather could. When I got up to the dogs they were on the bank of the Grand River. One dog was pacing back and forth on the bank looking out into the river. So I shined my light out into the river and there was a coon half out of the water looking back at me about 20 ft. out. My Grandfather arrived behind me in about 15-20 seconds. I said "there's the coon Grandpa in the river". He didn't EVEN hesitate or break stride and entered the water toward the coon along with the .22 mag. When he got about 3-4 ft. from the coon he hit the coon with the butt of the gun HARD. Then he did it again. His other dog came up to the surface gasping for air and swimming downstream. The coon swam deep out into the river. My Grandfather was up to his armpits in water. Apparently 1 dog had jumped into the water after the coon and the coon got on top of the dogs head and was drowning it. Grandpa figured this out ASAP and saved the dog. Me being 11-12 (and chicken) I wasn't going to go into a large river in the dark after a pissed off coon. I had no idea his dog was under it. The dog came ashore about 40-50 yds. downstream and was "ok". That ended that hunt.... Grandpa said. I'd had enough also and so had 1 dog.

Ah,the wisdom of age! Guess your grandpa knew there was only one place his other dog could be, and rectified the situation. Your senses are probably just as keen now.

I'll need his name and address. Wasting a beer is a crime!!

Looks like a pot-headed drag queen!:laughing7:

actually she's a singer and could probably buy us all!

oh and if you see one of her videos you'll see she's all woman

Well now..... Yea, since that time I have become quite the hunter. But,...... entering a river (LARGE RIVER) in the dark with a growling coon looking at you.... I'd probably have to think about it for awhile. By then the dog would be dead. Grandpa keep yelling at me to hold the light on the coon also. So he was also dependent upon me for guidance. Now if I had been outside when my dog "Mike" ran into the woods and got attacked I really don't know what I had done then either. Going to "war" is one thing.... going to war in the dark not knowing your enemy is quite another. But Grandpa loved his dog and it all turned out ok.... I'm not sure the same would have happened had I followed Mike.

FYI: Mike now gives me the big "send-off" when I drive off my 1 mile ridge road to the main Hwy. Him and Ike just sit at the end and wait for my return.... HE'S BAAAAACKKKKKKK.

Mr. Gordon..... change the profile guy. I can't look at her and converse with you.... it just don't mix. The pot headed drag queen comment is all I can think of now. Thanks everyone... have enjoyed!!!!

He was doing the right thing "sharing" the beer with the coon. Coon couldn't catch and didn't like his brand of beer. Guess Mr. Coon's address is the nearest tree? He left in a hurry I didn't get all the info, sorry. If he had hung around a little longer we would've invited him to dinner!

Told you old Mike would be his good self, and a little wiser. You know you would go charging in come hell or high water, pun not intended, but if it works go with it! Your personal safety you'd be thinking about it but when one of "yours" is in trouble there is no thinking just action!
