Since the brick has been in the house .... it has formed a large crack - drying out from woodstove / furnace heat . I also noticed that the bottom has the word ' KAAS' spelled backwards - as if they were stacked , and it made an impression . My grrlfriend thinks it's cheese . I'm still not sure . Thanks History.H for the new info , and of course PBK and everyone else !!

When that thing pops open no telling what's gonna' come out of there. I'd keep it in a cage to be safe. Didn't you see the movie "The Alien"? Monty

A weight was exactly what I was thinking when I first looked at it. I'm sure you all have guessed it. But when I saw the black looking markings on it and the lines going across it, I thought of something else. The bows used to play orchestral instruments were rubbed with resin. Is the object light?

It is fairly light - about half the weight of a clay brick of the same size .

Looks like it could be a old fire brick from a coal or wood stove. Some were made of asbestos and were very light so be careful.

Block of sulphur? They used to purify wood barrels for food storage (and beer fermenting) by burning sulphur in them. It looks like something that was cast in a rough cut form (hence the striations on the side and the backwards "KAAS"). Try burning a little chip and see if it smells like rotten eggs and smokes yellow.
