Misc data and adventures of a Tayopa treasure hunter

Don Jose,
You bring back memories when you mentioned "It was a different world then, no roads on the west coast, only foot and mule travel........."
I recall.....in 1964 Burton and Taylor filmed "Night of the Iguana" in PV (Mismaloya); and the airport had just been opened the previous year. That was enough incentive for me to travel there in the same year ('64). At that time, there were no 5-star hotels or restaurants in town-not even 4-star or 3-star facilities--but for a kid in his 20s, I could care less. I booked a room at (what I think was called) the Playa Hotel; on the waterfront. Close by, was a restaurant called "La Bota" where I met a Continental airlines stewardess. After dinner we went back to the Playa but the room was too hot so I carried my mattress to the rooftop where we enjoyed the rest of the evening. In the AM, I recall being awakened by the sounds in the street (cobblestone, perhaps) and seeing fishermen riding donkey's towing their open carts filled with fish. I went back to PV a few years later; everything had changed (for the worse-IMO) and I vowed I would not come back--for 'fear' of tainting the memories of my first visit--and I haven't.

Well, Don I can’t agree with your attitude. Life is change, and even though many things do not change for the better, that doesn’t mean that there is not something different, new and good to discover in an area. I have been to PV several times, and it has changed every time, most often for the worse, but that hasn’t prevented me from finding things that were new, good and different from what was there before…. By the way, great story. Keep them coming.

Shortfinger,
It's all a matter of preference. I'd rather be walking, pulling a burro to the next prospective gold mining campsite in the pristine back country of Mexico than choosing which of the two dozen or more 5-star hotels that now line the PV waterfront. With Don Jose as my guide and plenty of coffee (and ammunition) I'd be in 'hog heaven'.

Me too, Don. But...you don't have to choose one of the 5 star hotels. You can still go out into the country, and find good things and good places, and I have been able to do so every time. Not the same memories, but good ones none the less.

Change and development is most definitely not always better (IMHO)...the out of the way and undiscovered by tourists locations are my favorite locations to travel......

Nice to see.......got to be some nuggets lying around here also.......
Got to get out when I get some free time and before the rains begin......

Rains a good time to go. I find it relaxing and peaceful. Im half wondering if he was on private land rather than open crown land

hola Marticus, doesn't the rain make the slopes somewhat silippery and dangerous plus a danger from flash flooding in the arroyos ??? Out of necessity I have worked / explored in the rain many times and I agreee as to it's comfort at times. However at the end it is always good to have a campfire and :coffee2::coffee2: join me ??

Yes thats true but again also depends on where you decide to hunt. Days like that i like to wonder the flats with the gold detector. Theres also a new aussie tv show starting called "Aussie gold hunters"
