Misc data and adventures of a Tayopa treasure hunter

I'd rather the fish hook than the Agave. The area we were in has Black Bears there, they have been there for for 30 years I know of. Was walking down the "Trail", one side for going up canyon and one next to it going down canyon( really an old road to an old mine, but now the hikers call it a trail. LOL), when I heard a "Woof" and saw a black streak go across the trail and up a tree. Black Bear cub, so I turned around and started walking back up the trail whistling. I didn't want mama to be upset with me.

I've encountered many large agave clusters during off-trail hikes. If you can't thread through them, you obviously circle around them - sometimes in big wide arcs if there are lots of them. There's plenty of dirt in the Southwest that no human or large animal will ever walk on because of the puncture risk. Agaves are easy to transplant too, and after several years, several small ones can multiply into quite a cluster - at least in a place with good sun exposure. I've often had the thought that a damned good way to hide something (small cave opening, covered up adit, pile of rocks, etc) would be to landscape it with agaves, and throw in some tuna cactus to boot. After a while, nobody will ever go there.

hi, Agave ?? is that what we call Cholla ? The needles are exceptionally sharp and form multiple cores which pull out leaving just the outer, thin layered core , which is very difficult to remove. The real fun is when your boot or shoe is pinned to your foot, how to get your shoe off.

The Yaqui used to strip a captive naked then flip sections of the cholla until the victim was cover with Cholla after first removint the skin from their feet, then turn them loose.

No, not cholla (which is also a pain in the ass and anywhere else you brush up against one).

I'm talking about what they call around here "Spanish bayonet". Also known as "Century plant", because they send up a yucca-like seed stalk at the end of their life span, supposedly a hundred years, but actually much shorter - maybe twenty. Those paddles are like hard rubber. Those spikes are like ice picks. Bad, bad news.

This is Spanish bayonet

Yeah, we've got that kind around here too. I've seen many fields of this kind of stuff maybe as much as a thousand square feet - totally impenetrable. That Century plant - or what you call blue Agave - is the worst IMO.

Yeah, I'm slowly working on getting it totally around my property, just out side the fence.......

Good plan. More than a few folks here have planted cactus patches under their windows as a security measure. They look good and nobody is going to try to get in those windows.

I have a couple of agave patches in mind as perfect cache spots. You could remove a few strategic plants (no easy task, but doable) to get back into the middle of the patch. Then hide the goodies and replant the entry-way with small agaves. Perfect plan. Too bad I don't have anything worth hiding.

Your memories will do SDC, written of course. not like a certain gent, that I could name who keeps putting it off - he is going to live forever.. :coffee2::coffee2: I know I 'should' cut back. but every one should have a vice that spices up life.

Also know as Spanish Dagger and Sisiel (?). Points sharp enough to go right through combat boots on the sides, but if you cut both ides of a needle you can pull it down and have a needle and thread all at once. Reverse barbs down the sides.
Had places where we had to walk across them using the "walking sticks", stepping on the leaves, very carefully, as sometime the roots were not in very solid in the ground. I don't remember if I told the "3 Drunks" story or not.k Almost all the landmarks are gone now, even though I have seen most of them. Someday I need to try and go back for that one. It's perfectly legal, Nation Forest (so I can file on it if I want), and $5 dollars at the county seat to file on it. Small ravine maybe 60 feet long that they took over 30 Oz.s in one day out of it. But they were 90 degrees off in the mountains from where they thought they were.

Cholla is a catch all phrase to me for cactus. Teddy Bear Cholla, the needles are so thick that they look like a Teddy Bear's arms, you can't see the outside of it for the needles, not like Jumping cactus. When some would stick to the boots, I would use a stick to pry them off. Needles about 1.5 to 2 inches long and the ones I knew looked golden in the sunlight on the needles. Each "ball" was about 5-6 inches from tit to tip of the needles.

MUSICA MAESTRO!

The gate was closing, the sun was folding
Her hand was waving me good-bye
My door held open, my shadow broken
Her voice returned a short reply
Remember me to the highway signs
The colored lights and the highway lines
Remember me to my friends so kind
Tell them I am fine

The night had fallen, the moon was calling
A whippoorwill sang out it's song
There is no need for you to go
Like the seeds the wind would blow
It is best now that the time moves slow
You know someday she'll know

But today is nearly over now
It's nearly over now, it's nearly gone
And tomorrow doesn't matter now
'Cause nothing matters now, except the dawn

The gate left open the sun had woken
The dew left footprints to my door
She walked in slowly her image holy
She knelt beside me on the floor
I remembered you to the highway signs
The colored lights and the highway lines
I said hello to your friends so kind
And told them you were fine

But today is nearly over now
It's nearly over now, it's nearly gone
And tomorrow doesn't matter now
'Cause nothing matters now, except the dawn
