Can anyone? ? ? prove ? ?? ? ?:o that the Dutchman actually had a mine?? ?8)
NOW!? ?:o
Before you all jump up and down on me!? ;D
Please!? ?:P Remember!? ?::)
I was born & raised up in Phoenix!
? :D? I won't say when!
But! I'll give you a clue..? ;)
? :o?This Statement has been retracted!? ?:o
AND! I have spent many MONTHS! roaming around in The SuperstitionS!

Cptbil that is the same thing I'm asking here. I truly believe that since people have searched for more than 100 yrs for this mine I kinda have my doubts. Thats why I propsed the question.

Buck, yes I have seen a lot of the signs in the book. The one you look for I have not seen. I never had anyone to go with me back that far in the desert. I sure as heck won't go by myself!!!

I know a lot of folks don't want to let go of their own thinking of the Dutchman mine and thats OK with me. Everyone has a quest in life!!

I just wanted to know why is it so hard to believe Brewer's book since no one has found the mine after 100 yrs.

Hay mac you said that it was in Cal. there is a set of Superstiton Mountains in So. Cal. just drove by them yesterday. There is storeys of that area of lost gold & gold mines I Know the area well. If this sounds good let me Know I can keep my eye out for that certain map. HAVING MORE FUN THEN PEOPLE SASQUASH <><

SASQUASH:
I'm going to be heading into the Ca. Superstitions, (see my "Reply" #41) some time this Summer/Fall.? :)
I have some information of a pretty good size ? ?:P? Treasure Cache there.
CARE to join up?? ?8)

Everyone,
I've been to the superstition's. The place is huge,rough,cold,and dangerous as hell. We were threatened, shot at, tires flattened, and ALMOST run off. There were,on the second trip,9 of us. We saw hide nor hair of nobody. However, it was still cold, loose footing, exhausting, and one hell of a thrill. Did we find anything? Won't say at this time. Did we find THE mine? No. The actual mine,if according to the oldtimers we spoke to, was probably about 18 inches high by about 18 inches wide. Why dig an opening 5 foot by 5 foot and give away the location to everyone? Also it's easier to protect yourself and defend an opening that acts as a funnel where somebody has to slow way down to crawl in on their belly. A smaller opening also keeps the cold night air out and helps to hold in the heat. ........ANYWAY, what I was originally was trying to get at was after a hundred or so years it's understandable why in all that wide open space a tiny foot and a half round hole hasn't been found. Hell, it probably looks just like a rabbit hole or something. Not to mention, that size of an oppening would be relatively simple to disguise.
It might be there, It might not. I choose to believe it is........Somewhere!

As for the remark that over 100 years have passd and no-one has found the mines or treasures, so the whole thing must be? a hoax? Well the legendary mines of Tayopa have been lost for almost 400 years wth the best looking for them.? I have found them (yes Capt Bll, I really do have them & they are titled for the next 50 years) so the fact that the Dutchman hasn't been found yet isn't a criterion on validity.

Frankly I do not know if they do or do not esist, but if I wasn't invloved with the other (6) mines and treasures of the Golden Triangle, I would gve it a try. I love challenges similar to this, beats a crossword puzzle all to heck.

HI Again: First do any of you have any idea what an old Spanish mine working or Tunnel (portal)in remote areas looks like? First the early Spanish were seriusly lacking in explosives, so they resorted to pimitive hand workings, such as just hand drilling, fracturing the rock, then prying it off. They also just used a fire at the face of the deposit, then when the rock was sufficiently hot, threw water on it which fractured the rock (as well as parboiling some of the Indians who were expendable anyways) then pried the lose rock off of the face.

Under these conditions they did no more work than was absoloutley necessary, hence many workings may be no larger than a man can crawl into or work. Many of their shafts look like nothing more than a crack in the ground. They followed the verticzl veins exactly, practically never were they straight down.

So do not expect to see a nice Portal or shaft such as most later western mines had/have, in most cases they never existed

Incidentally where possible, they opened a vertical vent for fire ventilation. They would build a fire below the vent and the rising hot air would create a low pressure zone within the mine workings which would pull in cooler outside air. This is how they were able to use the fire technique to work the face of the vein.

So remember if you find any bars from the early periods, they were secured with unbelievable hardship and suffering. Take your hat off to those early miners even if they were cruel and oppresive. They did this under the constant threat of attack by the suffering or just plain beligerent Indians.

I have investigated some of these types of workings, frankly it scares me to even start to go into them. They twist and trun and are seldom big enough to stand in unless it was an unusualy large vein structure - remember most Inidans were 5' 5'4". Hereditary and malnutrician contributed to this.

Remember to get supplies often meant months of travel through what could be hositle country. So forget the lovely pctures in "De Re Metallica", that was only for the mines near central Mexico for almost a century.

Realde is right the Spanish were poor miners.?

I am amazed at the fact that the spanish had such a wealth of gold with such poor mining methods.

I once hunted for and located a spanish arrasta in northern Arizona.?

The old upright center post? was there as well as several of the stones used for grinding the ore were also found.?

The platform stones that made up the grinding surface of the arrasta were all still in place and intact.

The only thing missing was the cross beam that the mules would have tethered to.

Once I found the arrasta and thoroughly MD the area around it, I started looking for the source of the ore.

It took me two months worth of weekends, MD'ing, taking samples and looking for what might appear be trails leading to and from the arrasta to the prominent low lying hills in the area, before I finally located where the spanish might have got their ore that they crushed in their arrasta.?

And it was nothing more then a crevasse running vertically along a? fault.

There was enough gold bearing ore left to make things interesting.

Thanks guys for those last two posts will add them to my info list again Thanks ;)Buck

Have a few questions, as I sometimes search in Superstition Mountains Arizona, and had beginner luck I thought finding coffee jar with several pounds of gold colored granules. I was told by one of the treasure finder stores that it was fools gold, and am wondering where would you get an honest opinion? Your map with cactus brought to mind the map I made of the location which had a large cactus, and the code I used to indicate the side u as a ravine, and in my case the line down or horses tail meaning 4 or however many feet or yards down from a landmark.

A)? Iron pyrite? ( fools Gold) is easy to i'd.
First,? it is not mallable, It will break up into small pieces when crushed or pounded upon. Gold can be flattened so thin that it is transparant.
2md, It will? float on the surface of th water in small sizes, Gold will sink unless finer than flour. I.E, Gold has a far greater specific gravity.
third, Since it is iron and sulphur it will react with acid, Gold will not. (I know, Agua Regia, hehe)
4th, Gold will always be Gold colored no matter how you look at it or in what light? ?, Fools Gold changes color depending upon those condiitons.

This will do for a start, if you want more detailed data and techniques? ?just ask.

I've always been amazed that where ever there is treasure it seems that where it is turns into a state park, federal park, wildlife preserve, military reservation, or something so the government ends up with control of it some how. You don't think it was planed that way do you???????

A)? HI:? one reason is that most parks etc. in the west are created because of their unusual, spectacular, or rugged? areas.? By coindicence,? most precious metal deposits seem to lie in just such zones.? Generally the more torn up by volcanic, earth movements, etc.? the more likely it is to have a? pcecious metal deposit.

I carry a big Colt 45 into the Mountains an I'm not afraid to use it if threatened.

Ha, ha. We usually go with Ak's or Ar's - you can keep your .45? ::)? Oh, and I'm not afraid to use mine either? ;D? Seriously, in this day although a colt .45 is good you may want to look at capacity and? reloading speed...

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A)? A .? semi auto is fine for close in work, but never substitute? fire power for accuracy.? One accurate shot is worth more than 1000? bits of pure noise.? ?The spray and pray technique? seldom finnishes a fire fight,? ?basically only the hits do that.? Besides, remember who is packing that heavy ammo.

.A good revolver in med to large calibre , .357? up,? is accurate to over 500 meters, learn to use it!? In the Border Patrol in Texas we were taught to hit at over 100- 200 meters.? Yes, sigh, this was before they went to the semi auto 9 mm.

I packed a S&W .357? with a 4" barrel &? Keith long range front sights all over the wild, lawless barranca country of north westen Mexico.? A few times it was worth any effort since I am still here.? Of course this was before Echevarria? banned firearms for the citizens in Mexico, the narcos and criminals still have theirs, this shows the fallicies of firearm laws..

Jose de La Mancha ,
I enjoy reading and learning from your posts, but I just have to ask,? Why do you tilt windmills? :-\ and how do you do this? ???

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HI my firend: hehehe, that is a take off from "Don Quijote de La Mancha", a fictcious character that at the end of Spanish Knighthod went around rescueing fair maidens and tiltng windmills which he considered as dragons. I do the same in many of my posts in which the windmill (dragon) is replaced by a subject that is in question , or being argued about. A tongue in cheek kind of thing.
I suppose that being basically Irish has somethng to do with beng onry.
