Legend of the Stone Maps

Mayhaps a rotten onion(map(s)) was the desired effect on those following the maker , or user of a variation ,following a trail . One either designed to cover a trail ,or one to create a diversion of a trail?
Sure wouldn't be the same without Travis's touch..... but other maps have turned up by other hands throughout history . All with varied associated odors at the mercy of the map maker..
Having goose chased educates the chaser enough to lead others, if inclined. Depends on on ones motivation and character..

Ahh, good ol snipe hunt. No hagiss's here or they could be pursued ,with guidance of course. And some screech( drink).

The old tale of the Farmer and leprechaun comes to mind too.
Upon capturing the lil fella and being led to the tree his gold was hidden under , the farmer tied his red scarf around it and acquired the leprechaun's promise to not remove it before turning him loose.
When the farmer returned from getting a shovel he found all the trees bore a red scarf.
Versions vary , but one once had the farmer ( or wood cutter) hearing a tap, tap, tapping noise and catching the leprechaun distracted by his work enough to catch him.
Kinda like Waltz hearing mining (tap, tapping) and peeking onto distracted worker(s).
Some one tap tapped maps.......or multiple folks did ,o.k., multiples did.

If you read the Wiki article, you may have caught this...

"At General Electric's NELA Park plant in the 1920s, as a joke, newly hired engineers would be told to develop a frosted (rather than clear) lightbulb, which the experienced engineers believed to be impossible. In 1925, newly hired Marvin Pipkin got the assignment, and astonished his peers by succeeding."

Now, wouldn't be ironic .....

I still think it's possible that Travis found the H/P stone as and where he told a few of his friends.
I would also suggest, given the revelations previously posted by Ryan, that the reddish "heart stone" came to be in Travis' possession by way of his grandfather, and that it was this stone that was the key to locating the H/P stone, as well as the other five smaller stones which are now claimed to be the authentic artifacts. As to who carved them ? The H/P stone IMO, was the product of someone of far greater religious conviction and background than Travis but not necessarily a cleric. At this time I suspect the heart was carved by the same person who created the map by which Travis found the other stones.

How would the reddish "heart stone" (which I assume refers to the stone that fits in the upper trail map cavity) have played a key in Travis finding the H/P stone?

When I started working at IBM as an AGV tech in the mid 1980's I was told to go fetch a cup of brake clean in a styrofoam cup. Naturally the brakeclean melted the cup which I knew, so, I stuck a small metal can in the cup and took it to them much to their surprise. Every new employee that came along after that was required to fetch a styrofoam cup of cleaner and they all melted in their hands before they got back! Snipe!

It didn't. Travis hoaxed them all. That heart stone is only good when placed in the TS and that was fabricated by Travis so the Heart is fake.
Travis sent many generations hunting snipe's. Like he was the expert and everyone else just fools. Now it's his turn to be the fool. To bad he's deceased it would've been fun to have him on here answering questions and catching him in lies. I guess now all we have is the family to grill and Ryan of course. I doubt anyone will ever get any answers to that enigma. A few on here already know so their playing the snipe game with us. Don't fall for it. The Map's are fake end of story. Do not renew your snipe hunting license. I let mine expire years ago.

The key is where to apply the stone maps . Travis was unfortunate to find the stone maps without having supplementary info about .The other guys who found the other stone maps were unfortunate too .
We are fortunate to have all the set of stone maps to elaborate . I know , is very hard if not impossible to find the place where the stone maps should apply , but don't give up . The stone maps are not fake ! I give you my word !
Maybe one day , I will show you how to apply the Cross map and the CP map in the Latin heart . Maybe when the game will get serious .

Howdy Wayne,

I doubt that Travis's Grandfather knew of anything in the Superstitions. J. Frank Dobie would have written about it. In my opinion the so called ground map was just Travis's own interpretation of the PSM's. It was what he carried in his own search.

You apply the stones with a thick layer of thin set to the bathroom floor, then once that sets up the mud grout can be pushed in for that "Brown Look".

The only thing I think Travis carried into the Sup's was OPM's.

As a standalone map of a small area, and orientated to a particular view of one major landmark, ie: Weavers Needle from a point due south. The cross reference (sightline), perhaps in this case to the east from a natural or man made feature (an inclined arrangement of overlapping slabs of rock ?), would indicate the hot spot, with a triangle of some kind also at that point.
A written list of instructions (or derrotero as Pegleg was said to possess) and this stone, could have been all that was needed in order to locate such a cache IMO.....as well other places
further down the trail.

I must have missed Ryan's assertion that the heart stone was a stand alone possession, as I find that a bit surprising as this flies into the face of the existing narrative (Hatt?) that the heart stone was discovered already in the cavity of the upper TS which was buried facing the lower TS, and this being supported by the fact that the fronts of both TS are smooth and devoid of erosion, while the backs are rough and pock-marked.

While in Texas I spoke to a relative who witnessed Travis burying the stones to age them. This occurred at Peg Legs cabin.

Frank,

It seems the truth just can't be hidden forever. It was a great story, one of the best, for many years. I think most folks have heard enough to make some educated opinions.

Seems like you were party to some interesting history with Ryan. I imagine there is a lot you can't talk about. Damn shame.

See you at the Rendezvous on the 22nd.

Take care,

Joe

Sarge

I believed to age a stone , was to leave it exposed to the elements . I believe Travis buried the stone tablets because was afraid a possible robbery .

Is incredible how many folks who don't know the truth ( and they are aware of this ) about the stone maps , are making fictional stories to obtain profit .
One day , when the truth will come forth , the only feeling that they will feel would be ,,, ridiculous ?
