It was in the 2nd year of the CONFEDERATE WAR...

Only info I know is that my ancestors lost over 43 of their kin holding the line between the North and the South on Estep Ridge between the forks of Sandy and Tug Fork Rivers. My great grandfather was shot and killed while he held my grandmother as a baby in his arms. Then came the land grabbers took 5,150 acres of my ancestors land. A WVA state clerk Dennis Atkins was the guilty party as he was grabbing up all the land and selling it to coal operators and timber companies. Dennis is rumored to have buried $200,000 in gold and I am quite sure he had it to bury. All of this was land formerly owned by Robert Morris the signer of the DOI and half uncle to Robert Morris of the Washington Inn in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Did not the House of Rep's spring him from prison ?

Can not get into all that Robert Morris Jr. did for our young country but the most important thing was he spent about 1,000 times over of his own money than all of the people in the thirteen colonies spent together. Without RM Jr. there would be no America. As for getting out of debtors prison, he paid out millions of dollars while in prison and more after he got out of prison.

Hmmm, INTERESTING! Robert Morris, Jr. was involved with the "Fight" against the BRITS... THEN! We have a Robert MORRISS involved with the SECRET during the CONFEDERATE WAR! THIS time against "KING" Abe & the YANKS... VERY interesting, INDEED! Yes, I DO believe that TJ's DOI was used as a "BROADSIDE BLAST" at KING Abe; BTW, DYK...? Sally Hemming's first son Beverly (fathered by TJ) "passed for "white", left Monticello in 1822, and fought for the YANKS in a "ALL WHITES" unit during the CONFEDERATE WAR...? Already provided THAT info ELSEWHERE...

Back to the "OP"... "Post-War" (1865 +) indicated much activity was going on in Lynchburg, Va. Secret was "out", "deposits" were made & possibly "cashed"... REBELS, who NEVER surrendered were living in Lynchburg, or Bedford County, Va. WHEW!

Maj. FC Hutter was working for the Internal Revenue Dept. of the city of Lynchburg; Maj. EF Hutter had his own biz company... Rivermont Company, that built the Rivermont Bridge, near D Street; Gen. Jubal Early returned to lawyering, and was well-respected in Lynchburg (MANY funny stories, too); Gen. TT Munford had a GREAT farm on Coffee Road near where TJ had his "summer retreat"... MORE!

Robert Morris was a Southern Sympathizer also.

Well, RM died in 1863; I just post "dated" stuff, post-CONFEDERATE WAR...

NOW, for "CSA" Max; WOW! A BIG, busy Businessman! SKETCHBOOK OF LYNCHBURG: A Story As told in 1887 has LOTS of info on "how it was", back then...

...and Max Guggenheimer was the only person mentioned in the Beale Papers that was aive during its publication, AND, he sold copies at his store.
It stands to reason that the "unknown author" knew Max Guggenhemer as "one old and valued friend".

Per "Post" 389... p. 26, "CSA" Max Guggenheimer is on the Board of Directors of the Lynchburg Virginian newspaper/journal "now owned by by a company of capitalists and businessmen of Lynchburg..." heh!

So Max was also involved with John William Sherman and Charles W Button on a business level?

Also per "Post" 389... p. 30, "The 1st National Bank of Lynchburg, Virginia.... (was) founded IMMEDIATELY after the close of the civil war." Heh!

John William Sherman via another "source"; "google" Page 24 Beale Ciphers Analysis.

John William Sherman was at WSH for BIPOLAR DISORDER;died there & was buried in Roanoke, Va. (Find-a-Grave).

There was also a SECRET SOCIETY of WEALTHY, RICH Capitalists & Businessmen in Lynchburg, Va.; looking for THAT info, now... also was a "pic" of 'em.

"His (Robert Morriss) private residence, the house now owned and occupied by Max Guggenheimer, Esq, at the head of Main street..."-THE BEALE PAPERS
Max Guggenheimer's house location was 1902 Grace Street in Lynchburg's Diamond Hill District, and is now Guggenheimers Nursing and Rehab Center.
A portion of the Diamond Hill District became the Sweet Briar College where Adeline Ward McVeigh's grandson, Gorham B Walker Jr was on the Board of Overseers until 1967.
It is interesting to note that Moneta in Bedford county also had a Diamond Hill District.

Max Guggenheimer was a director of the Lynchburg National Bank as well as first president of Lynchburg Cotton Mill.
He was also elected to Lynchburg city council in 1879.
Max Guggenheimer was well known in 1885 Lynchburg and his mention in the Beale Papers had a deliberate purpose.
