I'm still shaking :hello2:!!!! Went out this morning with Ryan , EAGLEFORCE , and his buddy Tino and hunting a school that gave up big gold years ago . This school also gives up a silver once in a while too . As for the silver finds today I found a 1943 S Washington and a 1944 Canadian silver dime . They were both about 7-8 inches deep . Also found a 1946S wheat at 9 inches ! Now for the BIG one ! I was out in the middle of the soccer field when I got a +72 at 5 inches . I was thinking a penny or a game token but it was not ! I pulled back the plug and saw GOLD ! I took a picture and yelled over to the guys that I had gold and it had to be high karat ! I flick over the item and there it was my first ever GOLD COIN !!!! :headbang::headbang::headbang::hello2::hello2::hello2:. It is a 10th oz gold Panda coin in a 14k gold bezel ! I can't believe it ! I have thought about this day happening forever  . Now I can hag up the MXT , NOT :laughing7: . What a great hunt that I will never forget  .
HH
Glen

Here's one on my better ones - was not considered by anyone as a gold coin find - don't think anyone voted for banner
its jewelry - not a coin find

have found 2 foreign gold coins in rings and 2 American gold - 1 pendant

Casper,

You've had quite a few banner deserving finds. (your pewter USA button stands out in my mind). I think we all have our own idea of what constitutes a banner find. To me, I vote banner for gold coins that were likely lost while in circulation, but not every time. If it is the finders first gold coin, I would give it my vote almost every time. If a relatively common gold coin is found by someone who has already found several, I might be a little more picky. I think a lot of artifacts and coins go overlooked, even if they are more more and valuable than a gold coin. I'm happy mine made banner, as it was my first and only gold coin found detecting, but I would have rather had my cut Pine Tree Shilling up top. I'm fine that it didn't, I just think it illustrates how we all have different expectations of what finds should be banner.
Pl8man, I think yours is a fantastic find and I hope to see it up top. Congradulations.

Very nice find -
Ive found 5 gold coins in jewelry - none made banner because it was considered as jewelry - not a coin find
gold coins in jewelry are more common than ones that are not -
I look at it as a gold pendant - and still a great find

You have done very well getting 5. Just out of interest do you take out the coin & scrap the rest? (I know I would, being a coin collector)
You raised an interesting point, & I tend to agree that its jewelry in this case. I don't think that for that reason alone it can't be considered a banner find, but this is all about perspective. As a hunter of ancient sites, I have a different set of glasses than those who do, for example US tot lots. I personally would not cross it of my list as a gold coin but that's mostly because I would put it in the bullion pile. Doesn't mean I'm right, but if it were a proper gold coin like some of yours were, I would take it out of the ring & count it as a coin. However, I still wouldn't give it the same attention as I would a Gold Coin on its own from an old site, because those are the hardest to get. We should enjoy the hardest to find, it only makes sense, & in the OPs own way this has been a long fort battle of 20 years, so not exactly easy!

I have to agree with you. It's a piece of jewelry. It was never even a circulating coin before it went into the jewerly. IMHO, if it circulated as a coin of the period and was found unattached to any jewerly, it's a coin find. There are lots of jewelry finds with coins in them, but finding a gold coin that was lost during circulation is rare. With all that said, you made a great find.

:occasion14:..awsome !!!still after my 1st.jewelry schmelery its a gold coin.heck its both....very cool and a big congrats !!

In the technical sense, it is gold, and it is a coin. As others have said, it's all in how you look at it. In terms of being the bucket list find we all hope for, well, maybe use a pencil to check it off for now, and use the Sharpie when a circulating non-jewelry-used gold coin is found. Congrats on a nice piece of jewelry/gold!

Years and years ago I found a $5 US gold coin in a pendant, Tom In Ca came along and pointed out that it wasn't a coin find. I more or less agreed. It was found in an old rest area along old US HWY 66 west of Flagstaff...so no, it wasn't dropped in the period the coin was from, and no, it wasn't a really old site. Great find, but I have to agree with the "jewelry" category.

It will always be my first " Gold Coin " :hello2: . If it doesn't make the Banner then it doesn't  . It will always be a " coin " to me :headbang: .
Glen

Sure looks like a coin :laughing7:

you'd want to take them out if youre going to scrap anyways - coins are higher grade of gold - his is 999 - so you don't want to get ripped off if you are going to sell - I don't remember taking a pic of inside of that ring - should have - back was open showing reverse - with 4 small gold tabs holding it in - ring was 14k with real diamonds - wish I could have held onto it - sold when gold was like $1500 oz - that handful in pic was from a trip to Cozumel - paid for the trip back then

and Im not saying its not a banner find - its gold and .999 - it has more value than a lot of the finds up there
and 999 % of the hunters out there would love to find - Im just saying its an AWESOME gold coin jewelry find

Big congrats on that fantastic gold coin! :D

That sure is purty. Congratulations

Congrats on your first gold coin, it's a beauty:icon_thumleft: Here is some info I got off the NGC website, you got a good year8-)
Peter Anthony: The 1997 10 Yuan 1/10 oz. Large Date gold Panda was struck at the Shenyang Mint. The 1997 10 Yuan coins have an announced mintage of 54,853 but only a small fraction of these coins have apparently survived. 1997 was the year of the transfer of Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule as well as the Asian Financial Crisis. There was speculation and hoarding and then panic and selling. By mid-year Asian demand for Pandas had plummeted. The effects were not as severe elsewhere but the 1997 gold Pandas are still among the scarcer dates. This includes the 10 Yuan coins.
