HOMOEOPATHIC T ???????

I have a 4 inch tall BOERICKE and TAFEL Homoeopathic screwtop medicine with original contents and label but I cant read the word after HOMOEOPATHIC because its ripped off.

The second word starts with a T. Its 41% alcohol. Directions that say to mix 25 drops with a tumblerful of water seem to imply that its to be taken orally (for acute affections). Federal Law prohibits dispensing without a prescription.

Any ideas the second word? Any idea of date or value?

This is just a guess on my part as to what the second word is, I think it's "Therapy", the second letter which a small part can be seen looks to possibly be an H.

Can't tell you how old it is or what the value is, other than this company has been in business since 1835 and is the oldest Homeopathic medicine companies, at least still in business today.

That being said it appears that this company was bought out by Schwabe in the late 80s and move from Philadelphia to Santa Rosa Ca., and in 2004 they closed and move all manufacturing out of the country, but they still are in business today it seems.

This link will give you some info where you maybe able to contact someone that may help with what you have.

At first I thought TINCTURE. It looks like a H or an R. THERAPY is a good guess. There is an old medicine that starts with TR but I forget.

Oh, I meant to add that at 41% alcohol would make it about 82 proof, so it may make a good aperitif or good bedtime sleep tonic looks to be about 2 or 4 shots in that bottle!!!

THERAPY is a great guess and I appreciate the help. But Im thinking its 8 letters long, maybe 9 as it goes around the corner. . Any other guesses?

82 proof medicine? May be Prohibition era. :laughing7:

I still stuck on the second letter being an H because of how the second "leg" has a little crossbar at the bottom for lack of a better term like the first leg of the letter, if you look at how all the letter type is on the label, the only capital R on the label is in the name BOERICKE and the capital R doesn't have the "crossbar" at the bottom of the second leg on the R like the second missing letter and all of the other capital Hs have the crossbar.

I was looking at this list of medical terms and didn't see anything that would fit the 8 to 9 letters that made any sense, there are many words that start with TH and also TR maybe you'll recognize the word you're thinking of if you see it on this list, also I think that they would of used a simple word that the layman would relate to or understand so a word to complicated or technical would've stop many from buying this treatment for lack of understanding what it was for, which I do believe most would have purchase for the alcohol content, and I believe in the early part of the 20th century a pharmacist could prescribe drugs.

THERAPY seems the most logical but therapy for what? Nowhere does it say what the medication is prescribed for only an "acute affection". Unless the paper is ripped the 3rd letter doesnt look like an E.

Do you think its just a general "cure all" feel good prescription therapy?

If I found another bottle with the words "HOMOEOPATHIC THERAPY" I could be convinced.

I searched the list but didnt find what I was looking for as its an old medicine no longer used..

Yeap, I thinking it was a "Mother's little helper" kind of drug, the 41% alcohol and to take it every "...1 to 2 hours in acute or every 3 to 4 hours in less acute affections.." is about all the "proof" I need to believe that, take it yourself if you're stressed out, or give it to the kids if they're getting on your nerves!!! :laughing7:

I dont think it necessarily has to be a word that a layman can understand because I dont think its purchased from a shelf. It appears the contents and alcohol are hand written by the pharmacist. The contents appear to say 20 something.

I think the missing word may be the only clue to its contents.

What does it taste like? :laughing7:

The bottle has never been opened. There appears to be some brown powder residue settled on the bottom. The rest is the color and clarity of a light bourbon.. There is no mold in the solution. Its very clear.

Hey Bigcypress,

I'm voting for "Tincture," as the 2nd word. Are there any numbers or symbols on the base of the bottle?

I believe it would be post 1951, as that was the date of the Durham-Humphrey Amendment to the Pure Food and Drug act of 1906, which specified that "Caution: Federal law prohibits dispensing..." language.

How'd you come upon this little Homeopathic guy?

By george Secret Canyon, I believe you've nailed it !!!:hello2:

Tincture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A tincture is typically an alcoholic extract of plant or animal material or solution of such or of a low volatility substance....
Actually it was I that first thought TINCTURE (look reply #3)but I didnt realize they could be used for internal consumption. I was thinking tinctures such as iodine and mercurochrome that are considered poisons. But I am beginning to agree that this is the correct ID as the directions say 25 drops in a tumblerful of water. The dosage is 2 teaspoonfulls adult, children 1, infants 1/2.

Looks like a good ID secretcanyon and AUseeker. I would love to see a pic of another example of a tincture taken orally..
