Anyone have any idea what the plastic box with the round I.D. tags are? They had her last name ENGLANDER and the hospital "Beth Isreal Hospital" The hospital is in Brookline mass. I found all of it in boston buried in a plastic bag. There is a lucky charm police looking badge that has her full name. Leslie Joy Englander, from Newton Mass. :icon_scratch:
Any ideas if the disks are her birth tags?

Re: Hoard of jewelry.

Montana, the circular hospital tags seem to made of tin. The plastic container may or may not have been given with the tags. I wonder if this person was robbed? This is my most bizzar find. I am trying to research this girl and get in touch with her. I am not sure why they would have burried all these items in plastic bags. They were in a patch of woods with tons of beer cans, bottles, tarps. Seems like drifters had lived there before. :dontknow:

all through our tumultuous marriage my husband was having an affair. he was so stuck up with himself, his money and that floozie secretary from his work. every time he would cheat on me he would buy me a 'gold' piece of jewelry to cover up his feelings of guilt. he had no idea i knew he was cheating on me from day one.

when we divorced, all he wanted was the gold jewelry back! he knew the value of his guilt all those years! he was trying to hurt me again, 'in the pockets' this time! "me leaving him"...he couldn't believe it.
i got the house, car, ...etc. i cleaned him out!!!!

i bet he was awfully upset when he found out the jewelry was costume. that i had been exchanging the gold jewelry for lesser priced costume 'look-a-like' stuff all those years and pocketing the difference. he was too stuck up on himself to even notice!

the rumor is when he discovered himself penniless, his floozie left him and he lost his job... he began living in the woods with the homeless. eventually the city moved in to clean up the area they were living in. a local news channel did a story on the 'homeless people living in the woods'.

they reported about the homeless, "They were in a patch of woods with tons of beer cans, bottles, tarps. Seems like drifters had lived there before." they were an enterprising sort...they would scour the trash at 'beth israel' hospital, around the corner from the woods. besides the normal trash found, they would remove old aluminum inventory tags from furniture as it was discarded during renovation.

then they would 'hand stamp' the tags with the words spaniard, chinese, african, englander, brazilian, or mexican...etc. and sell or trade them for money on the streets of the city. the homeless were fond of their heritage in their hearts and memories, and felt the public was also. "a little coin for your heritage?", was their pitch on the streets.

at least until the city moved them out of the woods!

Cant somebody search her name online?
I was hoping someone would, I do not have access to a geniological site. :-[
When I first saw the original post, I did a fairly quick search for the name.
At one site, I found four Leslie Englanders, three with a different middle initial and one with no middle initial. You have to sign up (i.e. pay money) on the site to learn any further info. Hence, no further info ;D

From a newspaper clipping 18 December 1903 in the Lowell Sun (Lowell, Mass), "...it was reported that remarkable cures of tyhpoid fever patients are reported by Beth Isreal Hospital. A serum imported from Italy and Switzerland is being used

It appears this hospital was open prior to 1916 and was used as a thyphoid hospital. I found where it said it was founded in 1916...but the newspaper states it was open prior to that?? Are we talking about two different places with the same names in approx the same area??

"....Decades before Beth Israel and Deaconess hospitals came together as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, each was a leader in health care with a long history of personalized patient care and community service. In 1896, as part of their missionary charter, Methodist deaconesses founded Deaconess Hospital to care for the city's residents. In 1916, Beth Israel Hospital was established by the Boston Jewish community to meet the needs of the growing immigrant population..."

Going to try and research Leslie.
Annmarie

Added: JOY could very well be her last name and maybe ENGLANDER her married name...or her name could be LESLIE JOY ENGLANDER and NEWTON her married name. I am finding some Leslie Newton's on census records for 1930's. Can't verify if her...still researching all names possibilities.

Hmmm...with two spaces between ENGLANDER and NEWTON...doubt Newton to be her last and/or married name.

I find a Leslie J. Englander (born in 1960) living in Brooklyn, NY in 1991. Could be her? Not sure. Maybe these items were her grandmother's stuff?

FOUND THIS:

1930 United States Federal Census
Name: Leslie Joy
Home in 1930: Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1900
Birthplace: Iowa
Race: White
Household Members: Name Age
Frank H Damm 59, Head, Teacher, President, Jason? College (not having any luck with researching him, unless Annie is a second wife.)
Annie Damm 60, Wife, Teacher, P? School
Jonas A Damm 20, Daughter, Teacher, P? School (can not find her other than this census)
Adelaida H Prentiss 24, Boarder, Teacher, P? School (I find her on this 1930 cenus and the 1920 and 1910 with her parents)
Lillian N Morten 23, Boarder, Teacher, P? School
Harriet J Sarago 21, Boarder, Teacher, P? School (can not find her anywhere other than this census)
Sarah A MacCheram 44, Maid, P? School
Anna J Murphy 28, Maid, P? School
Leslie Joy 30, (CAN'T READ!!! UGH)....BUT...Leslie is a MALE! Maybe you are NOT looking for a woman, but a MAN! Maybe his wife's stuff, his mother's...HMMM??? Puts a twist to the whole thing. But if a woman who lost this stuff...ENGLANDER could be her married name. Ahh, this Leslie is a Chauffer for a school...looks like Prentiss, maybe Provost?

Some schools I could find that might match from the census?
Pine Manor School (Chestnut Hill)
Jackson School (Newton)
Parkside Pre-School (Newtonville)
Peirce School (West Newton)

any chance you asked about the tags. what their use was?
also, do the tags have the same number P266? my guess is different but only a guess.

my guess is the newton is a town name, but actually it could be something as simple as a pets name.

i apologize if my previous story was in 'bad taste''. i didn't mean any disrespect.

great job on the searches. it would really be neat to find someone leslie joy englander.

Ladydigger OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!! :hello2:
I am assuming Newton is the town, which is a nieghboring town to Brighton(Boston) where I found the stuff. Englander may be the husbands name, Lesliei could be a male name also. There were a lot of cuff links found with the Jewelry, so I suspect it was a couple that was robbed(possibly). This has become a treasurenet team project. Whoever can find this person will be a hero. I would just love to find the person. I did realize that the Beth Isreal has merged in the past and may have a different branch, but once I learned about the NY Beth Isreal I have a feeling this is the hopital. I has sent images of the tags to the Boston Beth Isreal and the woman who works in the arcives is in her mid 90's I was told. The receptionist showed her the pictures and she did not know what they are. As far as birth records they said they didn't have them and if they did the new laws would block me from obtaining the records. I forget what the confidential law is called? :icon_scratch:
I'm not good at hunting people down, but am greatfull for all your efforts. :notworthy:
I think there will be a great story behind this find. Worthy of a newspaper write up at least.
Lets hunt this person down and figure out what these jewels were buried. Prospectors unite!!!!!! :icon_thumleft:

As per the Libra cufflinks...someone mentioned...dates are 23 Sep to 23 Oct...so to find a Leslie with a birth date within this range. :) ...remember, Bob Hope's real name was LESLIE TOWNES HOPE!!! He was born in England...so maybe that ENGLANDER is what someone posted about it being a 'nickname' of someone born in England...but if the 1930 census is the correct Leslie, then in this case, may not be true..as it states he was born in Iowa. Oh, how this twists! LOL...;)

I know this is different but your hospital tags remind me of a thin tag I found with numbers on one side G-1506(a letter and some numbers) The front is different. It has the name JoAnn L. Hall and two dates. It remains unidentified. I believe it to be a coffin or death tag of some kind. Mine is silver.

Hopefully we find the hopital and the person and find out what they are. They seem to be death tags. They could be the parent of Leslie Joy Englander. :dontknow:

The interesting thing about mine is the two dates. Im assuming JoAnn was born in 12-30-43 and died 3 days later in 1-02-44, but I could not find her in Florida's 20th century Death Index. Sorry to hijack. Im still searching coffin or death tags. Maybe toe tag but I dont think neither are Crematory tags as they are always Stainless Steel and I have looked at a few in my attempt to solve this. Aluminum would burn up too easily. For whatever reason it was important enough to be saved in a box.

My mom use to make costume jewelry using letters like that. This was in the 70's. This one probably spells out Leslie based on the letters I can see.

Yes two pieces say Leslie, which tell me that this person is a female. Also I don't think a male would have a middle name called Joy (if tis in fact a middle name).
