Harvard Study: Gun Control Is Counterproductive

Got to admit. That is the first time I have been called a liability. Congrats! It takes hard work to come with an insult for me I have not already heard. Since you went ahead and made it personal I'm going to roll with it.

Please Jim, tell us all exactly what you do for a living?

How many of your neighbors knock on your door to help during a medical emergency? I think if you walked around your neighborhood and asked then you would find out most would be quite happy to have a doctor as a neighbor. Especially all the families in my neighborhood with little kids. But, you could be right for all I know, maybe they want a paranoid, gun toting, pistol popping conspiracy theorist instead. Anybody want to weigh in on this?

Feel free not to sign up for our list.
They would like to have a doctor, if they were sick, which is why I was referring to a crime situation...not a health situation. And, the doctor would be of little use to anybody if he were wounded, or killed during a home invasion, or some other criminal situation. Before anybody can help another, they first have to keep themselves alive. Once you do that, you've taken the first step to helping others. Don't get me wrong, doctors are great, providing they have a secure environment to practice in. Some tough guy, with arms, is generally needed to provide that environment. That may be cops, but if it takes cops 15 minutes to show up, it may very well be the tough neighbor that does the job. That's one of the reasons we need guns. Another point I'd make is that, assuming you're a doctor, you're in a vast minority. The point I was trying to make is that most anti-gun people, in a bad crime situation, will have no useful contribution, and are just kidding themselves about being independent. They can't defend themselves, and would be unable to defend their neighbors. Even an unarmed doctor would have little immediate value, though he/she could patch up the victims afterward.
Jim

Jim,

So when this theoretical bad guy breaks into my house who else is going to have a gun to defend me? My neighbor gonna notice and make it in time? I doubt it. Besides, I will not have a firearm but I will have a samurai sword and I will be hiding in the shadows. Not exactly a liability.

I did not report it...I chose to handle this one myself. It is a personal cheap shot...let Jim defend himself. I can't wait to here what it is he does that is going to make him that much more valuable to his neighbors then I am to mine.

My friend, what happens if you and your wife are out one night and you get car jacked? What if after your jacked you quickly realize they plan on raping your wife.... Do you travel with your sword?.... Don't think that is a slim possibility, it happens a lot more than you think..... Florida is not the safest place...... It is estimated that between 1.5 and 2 millions times a year a private citizen in this country uses a gun to protect their selves, does not mean they necessarily shot someone, means a gun was pulled, displayed or used...... Thousands of women a year use a gun to stop an assault that would have led to rape, rape is the most hideous crime that can be done to a woman short of murder or death of a child...

Twice, someone has tried to rob me in my life with a gun, once in a rest stop in Chicago, once in Washington DC, 3 other times I was threatened with violence by a group of 3 or more men at the same time. Did a gun save me each time, no, it happen that I had a boxers that traveled with me when I was working on the road and they did not see the dogs till it was two late.

In DC I happen to have 2 boxers with me when a man came up and told me to give him my money, I was taking pictures of the monuments at night (stupid move on my part), between the man and I was a tree, laying down by the tree out of his view 5 feet away was 2 of my dogs, the 125 lb male boxer and a 65 pound female boxer. They immediately sensed something was wrong, both jumped up and let him know he had a problem, the man took off running, they gave chase till I called them back. Put dogs in my van, drove to an all night grocery store, and bought both of them a t-bone steak...

In Chicago in a rest stop off of an interstate a man approached me as I came out of a bath room, I had a pistol under my jacket, same thing, my 125 lb boxer boxer was sitting behind a wall waiting for me to come out, he again knew something was up and and scared the you know what out of the man who ran to a car and left with a friend....My pistol was in my back pocket with my wallet so it was going to come out if I reached for my wallet...

The 3 other times were in county parks camping while on the road, no weapons displayed, but 3 or more men a lot bigger than me were going to attack me, dogs stopped me from pulling my pistol...

I stopped one attempted rape when I woke up one night to a woman screaming in an apartment complex where I was staying with a friend, I opened a curtain and saw a man trying to pull a woman into a car, in front of the apartment, I had no gun with me at the time, if I had he would have either been caught or shot, but I ran out the door screaming at him to let her go, he let her go and took off in the car, she ran in the apartment I came out of and I gave chase but I lost him in traffic, this was in Tampa...

For anyone to say they have never felt unsafe or been anywhere where they felt unsafe means they have been very lucky.... I have lived in Chicago, St Louis, Tampa, Denver, Lincoln Neb, Orlando, Minneapolis, Des Moines Ia, Kansas City, and many other small towns in many different states, I have been in every state west of New York/Pennsylvania/Washington DC, and litterly driven tens of thousands of miles across this country over my life time due to my job and my love of exploring America.

One just one vaction I was gone for over 6 weeks, drove over 7,000 miles and covered 9 western states, which included driving from Minot ND to Yellowstone, through Idaho to Washington Cascades to Seattle, south to LA, across to Vegas, north through Utah, back through Idaho, Montana and back to Minot, ......

There are lots of places where I did not feel safe in my lifetime, I almost always had a pistol with me, not always legally, but I had one........

I would rather be judged by 9 than carried by 6.................

As I've said before. Some of us prepare because of prior experience. The people who eschew this "guns are for brutes" crap have never been in a life and death struggle. Forced to kill or be killed. They have never lost a friend or loved one to violence. If they had, they would truly know hate anger and bitterness. Instead they allow the media to further desensitize them to TRUE victims of violence by sensationalizing random acts of it. They don't talk about the people that are stalked and hunted, sometimes by unknown enemies. Or the men who try to stop them. The police can't do it. They are to busy generating revenue by keeping speeders out of the rich neighborhoods.

Yeh I got to say that I have never dealt unsafe ever in any place that I have lived. I don't know anyone else who does either. If I did feel unsafe to the point where I felt I needed a gun than I would move someplace else. Anything can happen, I feel it's probability is extremely low. Especially for anyone who lives outside an urban area.

I've seen far more people injured severely by getting beaned by a ball on the golf course but I do not play wearing a football helmet.

I guess I "take my chances" fit better got worse.

I was recently at a district meeting of the American Legion. One of the guys had come to the meeting from over at the coast. His glasses were cracked, both eyes black, nose broken and the middle top teeth nothing but broken snags. This fellow lives in a very safe area, one of the higher class neighborhoods over in that town. He didn't believe in guns, because nothing ever happens, and he was perfectly safe, he handled guns in the service, but was actually turned off by them, and he a trained martial arts black belt, tough enough to give a rattle snake the first bite, afraid of nothing. He arrived home to his safe neighborhood and safe house, and when he stepped out of his car, he was hit by a tree branch right in the face. The bad guy made a world class mistake, but that's beside the point. The black belt told me he bought a gun, and once he gets his CCW, he's packing. That's a true story, now lets get a little hypothetical, I live in a neighborhood that sees very little crime of any kind. Occasionally there is a theft committed by a kid, and the occasional poaching of a deer. Probably on of the safer neighborhoods in Oregon if not the good ol' U. S. of A. Now lets say I come home after dark, I'm not mean, I'm not tough, I have 5 stents in my heart, I can't stay with a kid intent on immobilizing me and taking my stuff. So I'm hit in the face, and knocked down, glasses broken, two black eyes and busted teeth. When the prosecutor has me on the stand, and asks, "Why did you shoot that man seven times." My answer, under oath will be, "Because I ran out of bullets."

This whole "you can defend yourself with a sword" attitude is interesting. It is absolutely true that a blade can make an excellent defensive weapon. It is true that anyone with a bladed weapon inside 30ft is a deadly threat. I understand people want to argue, but its true. That does not mean for many people and most situations that it is superior to a firearm though. There's a reason you don't bring a knife to a gun-fight, but its hardly useless.

As I said above, better to be judged by 9 than carried by 6. I don't carry hoping someone will give me reason to use it, I carry hoping I will never need it, but if I do I at least have a chance if my life is in the balance. I know people have need theirs, no one died, but it was pulled in self-defense.

Jim,

I'm glad you replied. I like what you said. That is much more palatable then the first version. Perhaps I jumped the gun. ;) I apologize. That clears the air between the two of us. Make no assumptions...I am a doctor.

Crispin,

Not a big deal. No apology needed. The point is that it might be MORE important for you to take steps to keep yourself safe BECAUSE you're a doctor. As for me, I'm a simple construction guy. I founded, and operated for 32 years a concrete construction business. I did concrete work for a total of 38 years. The body started failing the physical demands of the trade 10 years ago, so I started a concrete raising business.( I raise people's sunken concrete). The work is tough, but a day-at-the-beach compared to concrete work. I'm 64 years old and still doing fine, though not as well as I used to...LOL. I believe in capitalism, because I see what it accomplished in my own life. I left home at 17 with only the clothes on my back, and ended up doing fairly well, and I accomplished more than I ever thought i would. Capitalism allowed that. (once I saved up some capital...LOL) I have no education beyond high school, other than the "School of Hard Knocks" that many of us have attended, and graduated from (more or less). I also am (obviously) a rigorous defender of the Constitution. I also believe the founding fathers understood that the people, through their government, were the biggest danger to freedom, and wrote the Constitution in an attempt to forestall that happening.
Mostly I don't join groups....I tend to be a loner, but make deep, lasting friendships with some people. I ruthlessly take care of my friends & neighbors

That can happen. So can about a million other potential misfortunes. I know people who have been injured or killed from every manner of misfortune both inside and outside the house. Some much more probable than others. I drive knowing that at anytime an erratic or drunk driver can slam in to me. I fly all over the world. I swim and kayak in the ocean. I interact with people knowing they could have sickness / disease.

We all "know someone" .,,, that has absolutely faced tragic events. We could all choose to live locked away in a plastic bubble to keep ourselves as safe as possible.

Yeah, it was J.R.R...you caught me. I changed it around a bit, but the essence was still there. It was a combination of a few different quotes at different points in the books.
