Picture is of a rock supposedly dug out of a hillside natural spring in about 1885. Hillside appears to be sandstone, is this a sandstone rock? Or basalt? or?

These were found less than a mile away from from the Tallahassee capitol building while excavating. They were roughly 25’ below grade at 110’ above sea level cased in lime rock. Came out solid in round ball like shapes, have since dried and began to crack. Found many in one location. Photos are of same rock different angles.
