This was in a specific flower garden area that I spent alot of time on over 30 years and the kids were little. It just appeared one day, i picked it up and put it in a plastic bag hoping to get it identified and i finally did 10 years later to this website last week or so. Thanks for your input anyway.

Black and white beach stones from Italy

Hi guys!!

I picked up these stones on the beach in Italy in about 2006. There are clearly several different types, some a beautiful moss green, and I guess the banded stone is sedimentary...I’m most curious about the dense black stones. The veins or healed fractures in all of them appear to be quartz, but that’s as much as I can tell! I’m planning to tumble them in a little three lb rotary tumbler...do you think they’ll survive and turn out well? Last two pictures show how the stones look wet - I’m hoping to achieve some of that some awesomeness!

I would guess quartz but then I am not the expert here. The guy that started this thread checks in on occasion. Maybe send him a pm?

November of 08 , while metal detecting near Barstow calf . Dug this up , very magnetic, and hard , 12lbs plus. Cut a pice off to send in but never got around to it , any thought of what it could be ? .

FYI The last post made by the originator of this thread was in 2016.

There are members who are pretty well versed in mineral ID that reply on occasion. Yours does not look like a meteorite but you can do some of the tests suggested in this link for meteorite ID just in case. https://www.google.com/search?q=ide...1.69i57j0l7.9366j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8. I imagine it is an iron mineral of some type due to the magnetic quality of the stone. Look up scratch test for iron minerals and try it out....The underside of a porcelain toilet tank lid works well for the test as does the underside of some tiles.

I was out for a hike today and found this black rock. It is very lightweight for its size, non-magnetic, and was found in the woods in Howell, Mi. It looks somewhat porous and has some spots with a little shine to it almost. It has a rough texture that reminds me of pumice stone.

An interesting find

I would really like to understand what I am looking at. The inside rock appears to be rounded like a river/ocean rock yet very abrasive which seems to be, or was covered by, quartz. How did it get inside the quart? Does this mean the rock inside is potentially very old or a fossil? In this case, between the stone and quartz, which would actually be considered the host?

Hey, brand new here and desperate to find out what my rock is. Coal, slag??! I really have NO clue! �� I'm in Salford, Greater Manchester UK. I've been digging over the woodland part of my garden and found it sticking out of the ground. There were coal mines under us before anything was built here. Thanks so much.

It's super heavy and about the size of a small football.

Can someone please identify this rock? Found in a creek in West Virginia
