No, I couldn't get past the hat thing. :laughing7:

Why don't you send the image of the coin to them and post the reply here? They'll probably reply to you because there's no effort needed on their part... just have to type. "Fake".

Re: good condition '1788 Massachusetts Colonial Copper' good condition

do us a favor, don't post stuff that's not metal detecting, this is not junk yard riches, you should have said this belong to my grandfather, show him some respect. right on! Iron Patch we hate fakes

Re: good condition '1788 Massachusetts Colonial Copper' good condition

The coin is very obviously a copy. But, if you don't believe me you can buy a set of scales, and weigh the coin and check the weight with what an original one would weigh. Then you'd only be out the money on the scales once you learned it was a copy. Or, you could make KRAZYHORSE an offer on the coin. It sounds like he'd snatch it right up. :laughing7:

I can't find a die variety that matches your coin.

I know of a good pawn shop in Las Vegas you can take it in to. They'll tell you if it's real.

That's basically the reply I got after submitting pix of my 'Continental Curency' coin to a noted colonial expert.
Short and sweet. My advise would be to accept the concensus, and be happy with what you DO have!
I am, mine is probably one of the Centennial copies of 1876. and I like it! :hello2:

buckleboy i don't care if it is real or if it's fake if you read the string you should be able to comprehend that all i am saying is get a second opinion from a qualified expert then he will know if it has any value even as a copy this post is in the wrong section of this forum even though it is not a t-hunting find i still think the poster CBW should be directed in the direction that would benefit him the most if i know it's a copy i still would say have it checked by an expert not to authenticate if it's real but to learn more of it's history better than trying to authenticate it with a counterfeit halfpence

The guy doesn't have to get an opinion from a "qualified expert"! The value of that "piece", isn't worth the weight of the metal it's made from! Don't cha' get it? :help:

What you don't seem to understand is that none of us here care about reputation, ego, or crap like that when it comes to identifying a find for someone. Many of us slave long hours in the "What is it?" section searching for information to help ID something someone has found. I think I speak for almost all of us when I say that what we care about is spreading correct information to those who need that information. That is the Greatest strength of this forum. (There are lots of places to post photos and videos of finds, but none of them--NONE of them--can offer the information that TreasureNet offers.)

Why on earth would anyone on this forum have ANY reason to lie about this coin? We are not "experts" but we have dug lots of coins, and had to figure out many similar mysteries on our own. There isn't a month that goes by on this forum that there isn't a real/repro question on a coin on here. I don't get it. If you want to be a skeptic, then that's fine. If the person who posted this coin wants to be a skeptic about what he has been told here, then that's fine too. It is true that it doesn't hurt to check something out. But him going to his local coin shop or antique store isn't the way to do it--and in that regard, folks on the forum are probably doing him a Better service than someone who might be interested in BUYING the coin. (In that case, they'd profit by calling it a repro then giving him a lowball offer.) Nobody here has ANYTHING to gain by lying about its authenticity. I have looked at all the die varieties that I have access to for these coins, and none of them are a perfect match for the coin. But perhaps it is the only example struck from that die in the late 18th c. I'd highly doubt it though, since that is unheard-of. So I guess this thread is probably done with at this point, unless he posts the weight of the coin, or posts a correspondence with one of the C4 guys.

well put buckleboy i agree on the discovery on a find as long as it is not misleading i have posted some of my finds on t-net and those finds have been stomped back into the dirt with conjecture i enjoy the hobby of treasure hunting and think it should be promoted in a good way not by trashing a find without proof this coin is not like what i am talking about im talking about the hobby i feel should be represented in a fair and honest fashion hopefully not trashed merry christmas scott
