000_0833.JPG000_0834.JPG000_0733.JPG000_0736.JPGHello i found this while metal detecting. ive took it to several antique stores , they all have the same story that it is iron, it contains another mineral, it seems to be from the early middle ages, none of them know what it is.in the process of talking to a musuem by email.....if any one knows what it is would love your opinion. please let me know it feels really heavy, but weighs 1.5 pounds...had it weighed at a place that buys gold it is very shiny like silver also has flow lines all over surface along with the regmaglypts,i am stumped, please help!!!! the length of the item starting at the broken tip is 7 and a 1/2 iches long the width at the bottom is 4 inches, i found the item in torrington, connecticut, usa... the back of the item is the same as also with the bottom of the piece......if any more information or pics are needed let me know, looking for everyones opinion thanx..............jeff

Im supposed to be ignoring this thread but I can see it everytime I login. I got excited I guess when I read Jimb's hypothesis and I added a few of my own recollections from Mrs. Ferglesen's History lessons. I guess I should have been paying more attention in class instead of staring at the girl in front of me. So I could have got mixed up about the seige.

As far as answering your question I have no idea what your melted clumps of rust are. What do you think I am an Xray machine? The rectangle piece looks like a scrap piece of common steel bar stock. I dont see anything that looks like a nail. Nothing there can be dated. Looks like more trash but if I say that, you will say Im putting down your great valuable finds. Im sure we will be hearing about them for the next month.

If you think there is something under all that rust and crud, then go ahead and do the electrolysis but dont expect me to explain it. Im sure you can find what you need in the Cleaning and Preservation section.

:stop::stop::stop:...I can not beleive this stupid thread is still on going, it was first posted April 11th, there are Banner finds that don't get this much attention, for gods sake close it down.:stop::stop::stop:

I thought it was a lot longer than 3 pages unless some posts got deleted. :dontknow:

You have found a classic Guzinta, I find one or two each time I hunt. Mine are shaped different than yours. Depends on the shape and perception of what you have found. If I had found your Guzinta I would not throw it into the garbage, I would place it into the scrap heap. Guzinta the garbage or Guzinta the scrap pile.

I don't believe i'm even commenting here, but here goes anyway-

Just one more comment in reference to the several piles of rusted poop pictured. Electrolysis when done properly only helps the object. It doesn't hurt it any. Build a godda** electrolysis unit and immerse the hunk of crap. Jesus! How the hell is someone supposed to identify a corroded piece of iron with so much rust build up it looks like a friggin squirrel? Hello?

im just mentioning it because that is what i thought of at first a spear or dagger forged out of a iron meteorite. beacause of the color the flow lines, the , thumbprints, the heavyness of the item....
thumbprints?

these new pieces i found may be corroded pieces of iron, but corroded pieces of iron that look like the ones i found with as much corrosion date back to roman days check it out" corroded blacksmith nails from roman days" check them out they look like they have as much corrosion as the pieces i recently posted....

You've never left a hammer laying outside overnight and found visible rust on it the next day? You don't think with some metals and the right ground conditions a large amount of corrosion couldn't build up in 20 years? Is a 20 year old chunk of metal considered old? I don't think so. Will you ever be taken seriously on this forum again? I don't think so. I think the reason you haven't been able to take any of this stuff to an expert to get it checked out is because your 12 and can't drive. Any adult who was really as concerned as you seem to be with your "mystery" item would have figured out how to get it to an expert in person as opposed to having strangers online speculating about a picture when nothing else really adds up. This is ridiculous.

000_0914.JPG you are going to tell me the bigger piece doesnt look like a blacksmiths spike, but with a lot of corrosion around it? you can see the head of the spike plus that sure is a hell of a lot of corrosion for something modern....
