000_0833.JPG000_0834.JPG000_0733.JPG000_0736.JPGHello i found this while metal detecting. ive took it to several antique stores , they all have the same story that it is iron, it contains another mineral, it seems to be from the early middle ages, none of them know what it is.in the process of talking to a musuem by email.....if any one knows what it is would love your opinion. please let me know it feels really heavy, but weighs 1.5 pounds...had it weighed at a place that buys gold it is very shiny like silver also has flow lines all over surface along with the regmaglypts,i am stumped, please help!!!! the length of the item starting at the broken tip is 7 and a 1/2 iches long the width at the bottom is 4 inches, i found the item in torrington, connecticut, usa... the back of the item is the same as also with the bottom of the piece......if any more information or pics are needed let me know, looking for everyones opinion thanx..............jeff

Jeff, the first thing I would do is have it checked to see if it is a meteorite by checking for nickel. If it has nickel, it is a meteorite! It seems to have flow lines on it as if it came down with the hole side towards earth. If so the back I'll bet has no holes at all. If it is a meteorite. It may be very rare because of it's shape. From there the mystery will only get larger. But that is the fun of treasure hinting, a mystery item! It could have been, what ever it is, droped into a cannon and fired during the civil war. What ever you find out please keep us posted! jimb

The other side does have pit marks but they are not as deep on the other side, the first 3 inches none to barley visible pit markings the rest of it does but like i said not as deep. i have tested it with my metal detector and it bops back and fourth between iron and coins(nickle ?) the weird part is i dont know if im explaining it right but when u touch it, it kinda has an oily feel to it. ty for the info

I thought this was solved...it's a blacksmiths' drift...surely you don't think this is actually a meteor that was shaped into a weapon do you?

I just noticed that in the original post of this thread you describe the item as having "flow lines"...so you've obviously been researching characteristics of meteors and are "leading" the "experts" to draw your conclusions...

It might be solved , I was told it was a Blacksmiths drift. I tried calling a place to have it looked at called iron workers project Uconn in Torrington C.T, it was a brick wall, there are no Blacksmiths in torrington to have the item looked at.i dont have a car right now to drive out of town to bring it somewhere else.I originally posted that it had flow lines plus the thumbprints beacause the surface of the item does have these and at first when i found it i thought it was a spear or dagger forged out of a meteorite. I posted my item on this sight on another thread that got deleted and the outcome was that it was a unique , possibly one of a kind blacksmiths drift. so maybe that part is solved, but im still wondering whats up with the surface of the item. i was told that it is possibly old, ive been told by a couple antique stores it was very old from the middle ages. not being able to take it to an expert right now sucks.so im wondering it may be possible it was forged out of a meteorite...............

im just mentioning it because that is what i thought of at first a spear or dagger forged out of a iron meteorite. beacause of the color the flow lines, the , thumbprints, the heavyness of the item....

They look like slag from metal working.

i meant could it be the slag e.c.t from a black smith?

black smith is possible but looks more industrial than that, although metal working happens at lots of different levels. Keep looking for clues, your getting closer.
