I am just sure its an eagle, not a pelican. If you look closely at the head you can see the hooked beak and eye as it is looking back over its shoulder.
Maybe. :-\ We need study the wings as well. Here is what a civil war era pelican would look like from NGE's link to compare with. Tornadolady, this one may not be over yet. :D

The second pic is an 1812 button also from NGEs link.

ADDED: the bottom button is tornadoladys.

I was discussing it with PBK on a different thread and he said the buttom tornadolady found is a "loggerhead" eagle button and not a pelican. I googled loggerhead button but it just kept giving me lots of pics of birds.

NGE, I don't mind doing what I can as long as I don't ruin anything else like I did that indian head.

When I do that and take the pics , what do I clean it with?

I am not suggesting you do that, just just tossing the question out there for others to add their comments on my thoughts......NGE

Charter members can search TN but all I could find was your conversation with PBK and this statement.

"There are lots of unlisted variants of the c. 1814-21 Artillery Corps and Militia Artillery buttons, and this "loggerhead" eagle would appear to be one of them".

I dont know. Thats why I didnt comment; other than I thought it looked like a pelican, at first. There are about 5 different variations of this button in the already posted links. You will have to search for others. I guess its safe to say War of 1812 era Artillery Corps. I dont know if its Louisiana related... PBK has been about 99.999% right in identification of artifacts in the past so we need take that into consideration. If I find any other examples or information, of course I will post.

Out of curiosity, was this find anywhere near the S.C. coastline or navigable waterway where a skirmish could have taken place?

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Yes bigcypresshunter, I think we were close enough to the coast and waterways that it could have been a skirmish site, even though one had not been reported there as far as I know. I do know they said back in that era there was a plantation around in that area. But there were probably quite a few plantations around back then. I know they said the house had burned a long time ago. Don't know if it was along that time or when it burned. It has been gone a long long time.

Thanks again, Bigcypresshunter ..............Tornadolady........

It's amazing what holding a piece of history can do for a person, what you feel Tornadolady is not uncommon for us detectorists..
Glad you found the best Treasure site on the web

Happy Hunting

I sure do want to get back to that site. And see what else I can find. MDing is very addictive, at least for me. I didn't think anything could equal fishing, which I love, but detecting beats fishing for me. Or at least gives me a different thrill. Thanks for you comments.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

 Wanda, first let me say Welcome to TNet and charter membership

That button is one awesome find.  I know the thrill you had finding it. I had that same experience too several years back when I went to MO on a CW Encampment Hunt. I didn't find any CW buttons, but enough iron to last me a good while. Oh, that was my 1st T-Net members' hunt, and I just returned from my 5th hunt this past weekend. You meet the nicest people here, I could go on and on but I'm getting off course with your post all the way around. After I returned from the MO hunt, within 2 weeks I found a CW button on my own property, so you can imagine the thrill I had.

After, seeing your find I remembered seeing one posted recently and had to do a little searching for it. I've PMed you on the results and also to the other individual. Hopefully he will chime in on his findings of the same button. He has it called "Corps Artillery Button"

 RR

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

yes "eye" see a backward facing eye and beak (a rather odd looking one but a match )-- so its an "eagle" not a pelican after all.

Wanda, I got my detector last March and made sure it was in the car when ever I went fishing. If the fish aren't biting I grab the detector. I found lots of stuff around fishing holes. I will probably never have to buy any lead sinkers again LOL.

Re: found this button and don't have a clue

Most definitely an eagle...hundreds of eagle examples can be found and no pelican examples...
